This is the piece of art that got me into critical role. Thank you for that 💜 because of that I found the dnd group that would become my perfect group. I completed my first campaign with them after running 4 or 5 with various groups of friends that never panned out. I’ve made and deepened friendships because of it. This art and CR campaign 2 mean so much to me. Thank you for the impact you had on my life.
Do you think that oaths can be taken only to serve a particular purpose and then be put down or put aside once that purpose is achieved?
There is a narrative I have in my head of an oath of Devotion (or any other oath) Paladin taking either an oath of Vengeance of an Oath of Conquest in order to overthrow and destroy a system of oppression an injustice. And that narrative can turn out a couple of ways, I think if leaned into corruption or a zealotry of iron fisted ideals the Paladin could end up being a monster worse than what was replaced- never satisfied with what had been achieved and reaching ever further to inflict their will upon a broader world and those they rose initially to save. I think this is a popular theme.
I can also see the narrative allowing a strong willed Paladin to stop. That, having fulfilled their oaths purpose, they lay it aside or take new oaths- to defend what they created, to grow where they destroyed, to help in the wake of what they wrought so that the revolution is not just another form of oppression and a new form of inequality. This sort of story is rarer. A story of viciousness in moderation, in violence and healing both equal and necessary.
So- is the changing of oaths something a Paladin can do for a particular purpose, if they feel necessity calls for it? Or- does an Oath become something that defines the Paladin- and is not so easily changed or necessary to change in order to achieve goals? Is the act of changing oaths for a particular purpose something that opens one to corruption?
I think there's a lesson to be learned in either path, but ultimately if a paladin can break their oath and turn to evil, another paladin can make a new one for good. So rarely do we see get to see what lies beyond the great quest that the finding of a new one can be a rarity.
People who defend AI (specifically AI image creating and Writing programs) will say it’s just a tool to be used- something that can be a part of our day to day to make life easier and to get used to having it around because it’s here to stay.
But the proof is in the pudding- and the pudding is that AI is being used to replace living writers and and artists ( and even voice actors) and it is being taught on the works of real people and used to emulate them stylistically and thus bypass the qualities that make those individual’s works unique and special.
AI is being used to disseminate false images of real things. It’s hampering research, fact finding, and professionals in creative fields.
So yes- maybe it’s “just another tool” but its use thus far has been to disenfranchise and hamper artists and researchers and (largely) put money in the pockets of corporations who want stronger bargaining position against the people they employ or by people looking to capitalize on the work of artists and creatives for their own unearned gain.
There are automated tools that are incredibly useful. I love the tools that fix or adjust the jitter or arcs I make in my drawing programs. Autoccrrect and dictionary tools are super useful. But the tool that is AI is being used largely against artists and creatives . It’s a weapon, it’s a method of theft- and what matters more than what the tool is -is how it is used. We’ve done something so ridiculous as to Ban TikTok here in the US, we should at least work on putting limits and writing laws around AI program use
