tomorrow is love jimmy day! are you going to post stuff about him? can you talk about how much he means to you?
Oh, hi Anon. My BFF is actually the person who is running Love Jimmy Day, so I am really excited about it! I'm not sure how active I'll be on Twitter tomorrow, but I hope to post some stuff about him because he does mean a lot to me. I'll talk a little bit about why under the cut.
I've never really latched onto a very minor character like I latched onto Jimmy. Part of it was just silly conversation between myself and @writeyourownlifestory. We had a long discussion about how he was really underrated and deserved more attention and love. It was really fun and rewarding to have that conversation, to flesh out the character with her - not all of my discussions about him were that receptive or positive or welcoming, but mostly, I've found so many friends through my appreciation of Jimmy and Tony O'Dell.
I was a very quiet kid in high school, so I didn't really relate much to the main characters of TKK. I love them a lot, don't get me wrong, but I wasn't like them, I didn't see myself in them.
But Jimmy is just there...being a good friend and supporting them without saying much. And yeah, that's a production thing, but the silent type deserves more recognition. The gentle one deserves more recognition.
The fandom has really helped build Jimmy into a complete person, and part of what I love about fleshing out a character left so clearly undeveloped by the canon (mostly) is that everyone seems to interpret him a little differently. His last name, for example, whether he was closer to Bobby or Johnny or Tommy or Dutch, who they ship him with, what his relationship with his parents is like, what he does for a living, where he went to college, if he went to college.
It's easy to see how people give him a firm outline, and see their skill in creating a good character that way. I think that's very interesting, and I love seeing other people do it.
To me, Jimmy is the introvert who won't get ketchup for himself but if his friend needs ketchup, he's up and getting it for you without a second thought. He's quiet, he's a little anxious, and maybe he's a little quick to give the cold shoulder when he's angry, but he's an empathetic person. He's a long-term friend, the one who you can call up after ten years and he'll still treat you like you called him yesterday. He's such an important element to the OG Cobra gang, and I love that I get to spend time talking about it, developing it, and seeing other people do it too.
Anyway, this was much longer than I originally meant it to be, sorry. I just have lots of Jimmy feelings. I'm very grateful for the other Jimmy fans who have been very welcoming and kind to me, and I love the Twitter fans who are finally seeing Tony O'Dell for the hot piece he is. LOL.
