listen, sometimes it's more powerful for a fictional relationship to be a friendship precisely because friendship is devalued in comparison to romance. anyone can sacrifice themself for the love of their life. but for a friend? if anything, that kind of devotion can be even more moving than if the relationship is romantic. there's a real dramatic power to prioritising friendship in your narratives sometimes.

the bard in my party is a great player. she was sent from hell to kill me. before the fight with the ancient blue dragon she uses a potion of gaseous form. she goes up the dragon’s butt. i’m like okay. youre a gas. the dragon has indigestion. i’m assuming she’s gonna pop out of gaseous form inside the dragon. but this is a gargantuan creature so it would just like. shit her out probably. but she keeps going. every turn, dash action up the dragon’s large intestine. how long are dragon intestines? fuck if i know, i say 120 feet. she keeps using every single turn to travel up the dragon’s digestive tract. after like, 5 rounds, she’s like, am i within 10 feet of the heart? sure. she goes okay great. i’m going to use performance of creation to create a giant crystal in its heart. 10x10 cube btw. not a spell its a class ability so she can do it in gaseous form. i now have to figure out what damage roll is appropriate. i tell her to roll a performance check and for each point above 15 she’ll add a d12 of damage. she fails the check, doesn’t even get to 15. she’s obviously very disappointed, she’s sunk a lot of rounds into this idea. okay, whenever the dragon moves i’ll let you try again because it’s jostling the crystal around in there. she says what if i crit? i say if you crit on your performance check you add +3 so its a roll of 23, that’s 8 points above 15, and you know what, if you crit i’ll let you double it. a couple more rounds go by, she lets the dragon fart her gas cloud out and goes back to normal. it’s a good 7 or 8 rounds into combat and she hasn’t used any spell slots, everybody else is haggard and she’s absolutely fresh. every time the dragon moves she rolls a new performance check. it keeps failing. a couple party members are down, everybody’s looking bad, the dragon keeps regenerating its breath weapon and its going to town. it lines itself up for another breath attack and she rolls her performance when it moves. nat fucking 20. 16d12. it does nearly 100 points of damage. the dragon is just barely still up. its her turn. she casts a spell. i do the whole bleem writing the hp down on a card and handing it to her cause it seems satisfying. she unfolds it and cheers. she takes the dragon down. after so many gruelling rounds of combat, after unleashing torrents of lightning that have taken out nearly everybody in the party at least once, after terrorizing an entire region of the world, the ending of this ancient dragon’s life is that it farts and has a heart attack and dies.
