I like thinking about how similarly Hero and Sunny reacted to completely different versions of Mari's death. They were the two closest people to her, and they both entirely carry the burden of it. They're both so convinced that Mari's death, and the collapse of the group, is on them. So they both do the only thing they can do to stay alive. They shrink back into their bed and hide away from the world, dreaming of her. The key difference is that Hero still had a family to help pull him away from the edge. Sunny lost his sister, his dad left him, and his mom is neglectful anyways. Even then, she was grieving for her daughter. Sunny didn't have parents to "guilt trip" him, nor did he have a sibling to talk him out of bed and bring him dinner. So he never had a reason to wake up.
