and i wanna document the SWITCH UP happening!!! my beck lovers and defenders, where were u when i was fighting for my LIFE.
joe didn’t love her, he loved the idea of her. thats why she was portrayed so unfairly!! it’s because its from his perspective!! why did it take people until s5 to figure out he’s a misogynist!!! please help me im going crazy.

AHHH THANK YOU SM FOR UR LONG TAKE I LOVVEEEE TALKING ABT THIS!!!
okok
please make no mistake that me personally was always aware of the fact that joe was a horrific scary dude with strong misogyny baked into his actions even though he doesn’t recognise it as that.
i think my specific perspective comes from the fact that i got really hooked on the books as i was watching the show (idk if you’ve read them so sorry if this is rambly) but by comparison, joe is so… nice?
his relationship with paco and ellie are motivated by a purity that is not present at all in the novel. same with his tragic backstory abt being abandoned which isn’t even touched on until the third book (which i also have major problems with because wdym joe doesn’t actually kill anyone). And he never tries to rationalise his behaviour based on said childhood (despite the cage stuff with mooney being remarked on)
but anyway book joe is a gross freak and tv joe is still a gross freak but he genuinely cares about the safety of his kid neighbour who is caught in an abusive relationship so that automatically softens his portrayal to the audience. same with his tantrums and derogatory language like you said, it’s far more consistent throughout the book and Beck’s unlikeability (which i never really got) was more clear as the format of first person novel makes the audience more conscious that we may be being mislead by the narrator, while in tv, audiences generally trust their eyes and we get scenes (such as beck in the hotel) which are completely detached from joe and thus theoretically not affected by his bias.
watching through the series You’s fifth season and i think the show needs to make up its mind.
are we supposed to root for joe as the damaged, broken but ultimately romantic and noble anti-hero
or
is he a terrifying, sexist, tempermental and hypocritical serial killer and stalker.
Because from season 1, things have been done to Joe’s character that have softened him. paco humanised him, peach was killed in self-defence, he was less of a public pervert and more of a romantic.
so so so many small things that add to him being overall so much more likeable. and you know i LOVE a deranged, psychopathic, violent, romantic. but, only when the creators recognise this for what it is.
i haven’t finished the season so i hope that it ends solid enough but man it has not been a great show since season 1.

“you’re still… forming. who are you going to be when you’re done?”
R and Julie’s conversations about his former life are so important to me. he’s scared that she’ll hate him for everything he was but when she finds out, she doesn’t care because she loves him for who he is.
But R has to grapple with the idea that his love for her isn’t really his love. He ate Perry’s brain and his assistant from his first life was the first face he saw once he got infected so,
does he really love her? or is it just remnants of other peoples love?

also a cheeky alt ver that’s less emo (you can see Julie’s face)

call me a stereotype but ramona flowers is the realest of all time!!! she’s so me!!! like im re-reading the comic and everything she says, im already thinkin!!
she’s complicated, she’s messy, she’s figuring it out still!!! it’s hard being a young person and having problems and having a whole history behind every action!! Nobody’s perfect! she knows she’s doing stuff wrong! she’s not pretending that she’s going to save anyone, she’s just doing her best!

Alex kralie is so important to me as a character because he’s such an interesting foil to Jay.
Jay sits around and finds clues and posts them on the web.
Alex vanished from his life trying desperately to stop this infection that was rapidly spreading and hurting all of his friends.
people forget his long-term plan was to kill everyone involved and then himself.
he was trying desperately to help everyone the only rational way he knew how!! how else do you stop an infection spreading when the people don’t even know they’re sick!
it was an impossible situation
In honor of his birthday, one of my favorite aspects of Alex is that he's an incompetent murderer precisely because he doesn't want to kill anyone.

hi guys im going to talk about why i like this now because i’ve been ruminating on it for a while.
this dynamic also usually represents two different presentations that autism can take in men vs women. which i find super cool and interesting.
with characters like alyssa and del it manifests as two girls who are super blunt and confrontational while for fig and nepeta, they fit the more high-masking stereotype of girls who like to talk a lot and are generally bubbly. but the kicker is that all of these girls are considered to be weird/unlikeable. no matter if they put effort into masking or not. alyssa and del are not liked/bullied, fig fully embraces the devil spawn stereotype and nepeta is annoying. autism representation in media is very limited, and female autism representation even more so, but these characters accidentally demonstrate some struggle that autistic girls go through and i think its neat. for nepeta, pesterquest explicitly mentions that she is extremely lonely and craves that connection to her peers, despite the fact that all of them bad-mouth or mock her in some way. like terezi admitting she’s roleplaying with her disingenuously when nep is clearly excited to have a friend who likes the same things as her.
for the guys i’m quite fascinated by most of them having a mild-mannered, quiet or otherwise solitary personality who have this underlying rage that they don’t quite understand or know how to process. gorgug’s rage is embarrassing for him, he was raised to be a gentle giant but struggles to make friends and keep his emotions under control. for james, he thinks he’s a psychopath when really its a manifestation of his trauma which is causing him to behave like that. R being a former corpse is the in-universe explanation for his unexpressive, quiet and awkward nature but even when he’s full-zombie he’s described as being immediately off-putting to even the other zombies when he speaks, despite the fact that people are attracted to M for the same thing. it speaks to how autism is somehow clockable in people (with things like the autism accent), even if people don’t realise they’re recognising autism, they recognise something as being ‘wrong’ with a person. which sucks.
anyway i’ll probably add more stuff and i don’t know if this makes any sense because im just talking out my ass,
my favourite character dynamic of all time (romantic or platonic) is
pathetic, violent guy who is actually very sweet but he’s bad at socialising
x
cool, tough girl who puts up a confident front and has to do all the talking
