In a propaganda coup, Protestants republished Stephen Gardiner's 'De Vera Obedienca' in which he defends the royal supremacy and pronounces Mary a bastard. Because Gardiner was Bishop of Winchester and was the Lord Chancellor who placed the crown on Mary's head, the republication was an immense embarassment to the government.

When she was joined to King Henry in holy matrimony, Margaret of Anjou was given a copy of Christine de Pizan's Livre des faits d'armes et de chevalrie (The Book of Feats and the Arms of Chivalry), which describes the perfect chivalric knight and encompasses military strategy and warfare. Not only does this seem like an unusual wedding gift, but it tackles and incredibly rare topic for a female author.

Anne Boleyn was remembered for rounding on the nuns of Syon for their 'ignorant praying' and presenting them with prayer books in English 'that they might...understand what they did pray for'.
