Quote
Dear Sir or Madam, I am a student at the University for the Creative Arts, studying for a Masters in Design, Innovation and Brand Management. I am currently working on a live group brief where we have been asked to identify and research into an area of life that may potentially be a problem or issue for some people. The aim of this project is to eventually work towards developing a solution for the problem we focus in on. Myself and my other four female group members feel very strongly on a personal level about the work being done by Breast Cancer charities and would feel privileged to become involved in the work being done for this cause. At this stage in our project we are looking to find out any information or stories that you have to tell about how after treatment support and care is offered, and if you feel there are any gaps where this is lacking or not being dealt with well enough. As a group we have different backgrounds in a variety of the creative industries and feel that our skills could be used to potentially build and develop a new and exciting service or product for the emotional after care and support of breast cancer patients. This is just one of many possibilities and we would love to hear your thoughts on these topics, especially if you think there are places where the services are lacking. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I very much look forward to hearing back from you. I hope this was the right way to contact you. Yours Faithfully

Research on the Packaging problem
***
The chart above, found on the Unilever Website shows us that wastes made by soaps, shower gels and skincare comes in 3rd place out of a possible 11. This number is quite high, and shows that this is a profound problem, causing waste in product, packaging and money.

Research made on packaging
****
If as a group we were to redesign a package and create a campaign for it we would need to consider the following... Waste: When designing a product and its packaging, it is important to ensure that there is minimum waste of materials (if possible, no waste at all). Why: 1. When a company manufactures a design the materials used are often expensive. Any wasted materials means that the company is also wasting money. In a competitive world waste must be minimised. 2. If there is little waste of material then less material is needed to manufacture a design. This helps conserve the environment. For example, if a manufacturer of card packaging keeps waste to a minimum then less trees need to be cut down to provide the card. 3. Energy (electricity etc...) To drive machinery is needed to manufacture designs. If waste material is produced it means that energy has been wasted cutting, shaping or removing this useless material. 4. Recycle as much waste material as possible and use it again. This saves money and the protects the environment.

Research on packaging problems
***
Here are the images I found which are already existing solutions for bottles. The majority of the bottles seen are double sided, having an opening on both ends, this stops the problem of wasting products, or else the material used for the packaging can be squeezable.

This is a video Fran found, which is a video showing us how to check for breast cancer.
This video is fun, engages viewers and encourages people to share this video, widening the awareness for breast cancer for both men and women.
All in all, a very effective video

Macmillian Video: Phase 4 Depression
***
We presented this video to show how depression is one of the negative emotions which takes over after discovering you have cancer.
During the feedback for our presentation; Cameron and Steve pointed out the fact that this woman talking about depression can talk about it because she has passed that phase. But how would one communicate to someone going through a series of negative emotions such as stress, depression and loneliness?

Part 2 Presentation to Dr Cameron Watts and Steve Herring
***
Fran and Sophie talked through the emotional touch points cancer patients go through. As a group if we were to work on this campaign, we would concentrate on bettering the experience of cancer patients after treatment. After speaking to a a nurse at the cancer care centre in Epsom, we found that the after care for patients is greatly lacking, and can be improved on.
However, through our feedback we were told to concentrate on the void which exists from when patients are diagnosed with a serious illness to when they receive treatment.
This is interesting as personally, when I get ill with the flu, I tend to be anti-social, tired and not very happy-now imaging what a cancer patient is going through. The question is- how do we bridge the gap, make the transaction for patients to get up and go to get the right help without being too overwhelmed.
This was the problem which got chosen for us to work further on, as there is an actual need for this. If we come up with the right solution, we could essentially use it in the real world

Second Presentation to Dr Cameron Watts & Steve Herring
-Packaging
-Breast Cancer
***
From last presentation, we split our group in half to concentrate on the 2 problems so that we wont waste too much time on one thing.
The first part of the presentation was the problem on packaging. Our field research showed us that the packaging problems weren't a problem at all for hairdressers. Through out brief interviews with the people working in hair salons we found that they buy in bulk, have refillable bottles or have packaging which enables them to turn the bottles upside down, so that they will be able to use the last part of the product left. Therefore the problem mainly lies with the end user.
If we were to take this problem further we would be designing new exciting packaging, saving on the products which are usually left as waste. An in-sentive would also need to be given for consumers to buy into our products. This idea derived from a crushable water bottle which is popular in Thailand, where people bought this product just to crush it with their friends. A video of this is included in the next post.
The feedback was fairly positive, we were told that we should get into the minds of men and their problems on packaging. And that as a young creative team we should care about making anyone cross, such as the manufacturers of existing packaging.
