Teardown of the bottom/shoulder button assembly for the 2011 edition of the Nintendo 3DS XL. On the right is a screw post that is damaged beyond repair. The last person working on this unit also lost a nut and so damaged both the place where it belonged and the grey plastic piece that retains the right shoulder button. I'm going to the hardware store to attempt to find a matching nut so that the latter parts don't sustain any further damage. The battery measured 0 volts. I have a new one arriving tomorrow, but the unit was dead when I tried a charged 3DS battery. Both fuses show continuity. This is the second DS Lite where this inductor has exploded off the logic board. It was rattling around inside the case. Unlike the other inductor, it measures correctly. This time I used my brand new imitation Chinese magic tweezers for the measurement. What I have deduced is that it's caused by a cold solder joint and the owner pressing the A button too enthusiastically during gameplay. This particular DS Lite does not boot at all. There is obvious corrosion on the motherboard/logic board from the unit getting wet. Generally speaking, you can spend hours cleaning these boards and re-running traces but the boards are only worth about $2 or $3 each, so this is a waste of your time. If the rest of the unit works, then I can simply drop a new logic board in the unit and be done with it. That is the plan. Next on the repair agenda is this Nintendo 3DS. Everything works except the upper screen. I'll have a new screen coming in later this week. You have to do a complete tear down of the device in order to replace the screen. The procedure on ifixit.com is said to be very difficult and takes 4-5 hours. If I screw up the repair, I'm out almost $70.
