AZUT '22 - Sunrise at the Spiral Jetty, Great Salt Lake, UT - Artist Robert Smithson leased 10 acres of land in the spring of 1970. Using over six thousand tons of black basalt rocks and earth from the site, Smithson formed a coil 1,500 feet long and 15 feet wide that winds counterclockwise off the shore into the water. The work has been intermittently visible since it's completion in 1970 due to rising water levels in the lake and was totally submerged from roughly 1972 to 2002. AZUT '22 - Edmaine's Secret, Buckskin Gulch Trail - a left hand turn up an unassuming sandy wash led to this treasure trove of rock formations and puddles. A mind blowing assortment of all kinds of geological delights packed into a few square acres, all mushed together. A fun consolation prize was the New Wave, a small formation across the street from the Wahweap area of Lake Powell. Easier access and no crowds as well! AZUT '22 - Antelope Point Boat Ramp, Lake Powell, Page AZ -This boat ramp ends at an abrupt cliff, 85 feet to be exact! Lake Powell has been less than 50% full since 2003, just 4 years since being declared full pool in 1999. The operation of Glen Canyon Dam ensures equitable distribution of water resources from the Colorado River Basin. In drought years, Glen Canyon guarantees a water delivery to the Lower Basin states, without the need for rationing in the Upper Basin. In wet years, it captures extra runoff for future use.
