Jimi May is a unique artist who resides on the Northern Beaches in Sydney. Born in 1989, his love for drawing and illustration began at a young age, which inspired him to complete his Bachelor of Fine Art at the National Art School, Sydney majoring in painting.
Jimi demonstrates a passion for the Renaissance classics and quickly developed his own unique style in the chiaroscuro methods, specialising in tonal contrasts as he modelled his craft on his favourite artist, Carravagio. Because of his love for the Renaissance, he has spent time in Florence, Italy learning the technique of the masters who have been his main inspiration.
Although his style has its foundations in the Renaissance he represents the landscape of a young popular culture especially in the rock music and tattoo industry. He has shown his versatility in producing a wide range of commissioned artworks from portraits to still life paintings.
Jimi is also building a fast and growing reputation as a young emerging tattoo artist. He picked up his first tattoo machine in July, 2011 and has been tattooing from Dee Why Tattoo since then. He is becoming well known for his specialty in black and grey tattoos and he continues to explore new ways to combine traditional designs with contemporary techniques.
Jimi’s other passion is music, he has played guitar and toured in bands since high school. He has experienced songwriting and recording in Los Angeles with artists such as Tommy Lee, Matt Sorum and Jeff Blue while signed with Sony, Australia. He is now currently part of an emerging Sydney roots/rock duo, Gypsys Gift.
