i was thinking about it and i realized that in Rule of Wolves when Zoya and Nikolai go to Ketterdam and meet up with Kaz and Wylan and Jesper, they don’t realize that Wylan is a literal member of the Merchant Council. Zoya can’t remember his last name. so they have no idea that an actual Kerch government official helped them break into his own country’s steel reserves. and anyway i have come up with two potential scenarios of them discovering this and i can’t decide which is funnier:

1. Word gets around that Councilman Van Eck is coming on official business. Kuwei hears. he ends up talking about it in earshot of Zoya/Nikolai. something like:

Kuwei: oh, Wylan’s coming? Do you know if he’s bring Jesper?

Zoya: ? No, Councilman Van Eck is coming.

Kuwei: yeah, Wylan. you remember him, don’t you? he had my face for a while? Genya had to tailor him back?

Zoya: he is Councilman Van Eck? a government official?

or,

boat docks. the fanfare customary of a foreign government official coming to your country occurs. Wylan walks out. Zoya and Nikolai are shocked. stunned. bamboozled. they manage to keep it together in front of everyone else. they get inside and are alone and have the following conversation:

Nikolai: Wylan????

Wylan: hello!

Zoya: you’re Councilman Van Eck???

Wylan: yeah? don’t you remember helping us fake Kuwei’s death and exposing my father? i took his place after the trial

Nikolai: you helped us steal from the Kerch Steel Reserve!

Wylan: i have hobbies.

if we do end up getting the mentioned soc bonus content where the heist is told through letters, and there's a letter in there where jesper has written it on behalf of wylan, so help me GOD you will hear me screaming across the whole damn country. witnessing their love like that on paper would possibly end me and i'd never shut up about it.

at a conference I attended recently, a researcher pointed to the difficulty of finding material in archives because so much depends on the metadata and the terminology used to describe things changes over time. "it would be so helpful," the researcher said, "if I typed 'lesbian' into the library of congress database, it would also show me results that were categorised in the 50s, when the materials were interpreted as 'intimate female friendships'"

which is what tag wrangles at Archive Of Our Own do incredibly effectively: searching for "omegaverse" also leads to "alpha/beta/omega dynamics" and "alternate universe: a/b/o" and so on. but ao3 achieves this frankly incredible categorisation and indexing system by the power of countless volunteers putting in hours and hours of unpaid and unthanked free time, and it's completely understandable that most archives do not have that kind of infrastructure, but also how incredible that a fan-run website has better searchability, classification, and accessibility than the library of congress
