“Facebook was not originally created to be a company. It was built to accomplish a social mission – to make the world more open and connected.” – Mark Zuckerberg There are two types of companies, those who focus on making a profit and those who focus on making a difference. We must be driven to make money in order to stay in business, but when our sole focus is the quarterly dividends, we pass over our greatest value proposition. Who we are needs to be a reflection of who the customers want to see when they look in the mirror. We need to be the best versions of ourselves so that we can bring out the best in those who buy from us. Customers yearn for the opportunity to take up a cause, especially when it is coupled with something they are willing to pay for. The two things every consumer should receive when they purchase from you is a high-quality product and peace of mind. If our goal is to make a difference, we are propelled forward by the need to utilize every resource efficiently in order to ensure that we can provide as much value to whom and for what we are working. Because every corner we cut in regards to our purpose is one less widget we can deliver to those in need. The easiest way for organizations to make a difference is to bring light to the issues of which they care so deeply. To do this we need to create content that highlights individuals and companies who embody the inspirational message we congruently want to send. When making a difference is in the driver’s seat, your customers will follow. A brand is not defined by the commodity it sells, but on the value it provides to the community. Companies need to focus on the positive impact they are able to make not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s good business as well. “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss The depth of which we learn is dependent upon our passion, not our monetary worth. We can control our intellectual capital while our financial capital can be affected by external forces. With the markets ever-shapeshifting, our finances feel like they are kept in a leaky pot, as our inability to hold onto what we make drips away. But what we store in our minds will be safe as long as we continue to help it grow. While increasing how much we make in dollars and cents rarely affects how much we know, there is a direct correlation between increasing our intellectual capital and the subsequent rise of our financial capital. What we are able to accomplish is dependent upon our ability to communicate our ideas as effectively as possible. The only thing holding us back from conveying our ideas productively is what we know. An expert is someone who has increased their knowledge base to an extent that they can now provide value to those around them. We are what we do for those around us. Above all else, intellectual capital is worth far more than financial capital because of what happens when you share it. We know that if we give a fish we have fed someone for a day, but if we teach them how to do it, they can feed themselves for a lifetime. We owe it to our communities to continue the learning process so that we can provide as much value back to from where we came. It is, therefore, our responsibility to those around us that we continue to grow our ability to learn so we can share that much more.; what we invest in ourselves will pay dividends in the lives of others for years to come. One of the great things about learning is that it can take you wherever you want to go; the best part about it is that you can take everyone else along for the ride. “Marketing is too important to be left to the marketing department.” – David Packard ~ Co-founder and former CEO of Hewlett-Packard Every company is a marketing company. It is just at this moment we have chosen to market one specific product. But rather than define ourselves by our product, we must realize that what we are selling is increased demand. The services we provide will change and evolve, so too must we adapt to the ever-changing business landscape in order to expand the ways in which we draw attention to our brand. We need to be at the forefront of the marketing revolution so that we can adapt our product to what the customer really wants. The best part about marketing efficiently is that not only do we increase our outreach, we bring everyone in our organization closer together by incorporating them into the process. Far gone are the days where a specific department handled how we connect to, and build relationships with, our customers. It is in the best interest of our consumers that we leverage our best assets, our people, by incorporating them into how we tell our story. Good companies focus on how they can increase demand for their products while great companies focus on how they can increase demand for themselves. Our customers don’t so much buy what we do, they buy why we do it. They want to know what drives us, what propels us forward, and how we are using that ambition to help improve their community. People don’t care about the features of a product as much as they care about how it benefits them. This means that when we market we not only need to highlight the functionality of our product, we need to focus on the macro benefits that we provide to the well-being of society. Because then our customers are buying for themselves, the one thing for which they will always be willing to pay. Branding social good is what’s best for everyone. It is much easier to paint a mural when everyone has a brush. (Creation of an abstract mural, #Pexels) #DavidPackard #HewlettPackard #QuoteOfTheDay #Marketing #Branding #WeAreAllMarketingCompanies

“None of us is as smart as all of us.” – Ken Blanchard ~ American author and management expert In order for our economy to continue to grow and evolve, we must create an environment where startups and their counterpart incumbents can coexist. The only way that new businesses will continue to be developed is if the individual has a justifiable hope that they can be successful selling something that provides value to the community. But the responsibility falls on those who already have market share. It is inefficient to spend money on strengthening the barriers to entry because we can increase our profits much more so when we turn a competitor into a partnership. The fear of losing ground to the next generation companies, although understandable, stops large organizations from gaining far more ground in the future through collaboration. We need to view startups, no longer as bumps in the road, but as assets in regards to research and development, intellectual property, and marketing via grassroots co-branding campaigns. A new consumer base is reached when we tap into the startup’s following which allows us to expand them into our own. The progressive attitude of the incumbents will influence public perception of their companies and will inevitably be one of the best ways they can market themselves for return on investment. As time goes by the relationship will evolve whereby the organization is no longer lifting up the ‘little guy’, it will be the small businesses propping up the organization. When incumbents strengthen startups and provide hope for other individuals, we has consumers are provided better products in a healthier business environment, where partnerships are the backbone of the community. “I think if you have the ability and talent in one way, you have it in all ways. I’m not a jack of all trades; I’m a master of many. I don’t feel there is anything I can’t do if I want to.” – Evel Knievel All great companies are focused around developing a pinwheel product. Their competitive advantage lies in creating a main product and then complimenting it with auxiliary products branded off from the original. As important as the complimentary products will be, the longevity of an organization lies in its ability to distinguish what is their pinwheel product, and by doing so, they will identify what they do better than anyone else. Jim Collins argues, in his bestselling book “Good to Great”, that we need to base everything we do around the hedgehog concept. We need to pursue those ventures that align with three things: what we are most passionate about, what provides us the greatest return on investment, or profit per X, and what we can do better than anyone else in the world. If we only follow one or two of these ideals, we no longer are providing a solid, value proposition to our customers. Our competitive advantage will not just be based around a specific job we do, it will be the way in which we best communicate our ideas. Our advantage will transcend over any job or work we do, it will permeate itself into every aspect of our lives. Our goal must be to focus on what we do best and then to add spokes off of our pinwheel product through complimentary skillsets and knowledge. This will not only increase the value of our competitive advantage, it will also provide more options to our customers. We owe it to those around us to develop our pinwheel product so that we can create a world where a summer’s breeze keeps the whole world spinning, and that makes us feel fine. It would mean a lot to us if you read today's full blog post at Medium.com under @claytonjjensen (Evel Knievel created demand for himself by realizing that he was a pinwheel product; Image by Michael R Perry #Flickr) @official_evel_knievel @apple @amazon @tesla @jeffbezos @elonmusk #EvelKnievel #QuoteOfTheDay #JimCollins #Apple #SteveJobs #Amazon #JeffBezos #Tesla #ElonMusk

You Are A Genius “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” – Albert Einstein Human capital is defined as a measure of the economic value that individuals provide through their various skillsets. The term ‘human capital’ was coined by economist Theodore Shultz who believed that it was like any other type of capital. He argued that we have the ability to invest in ourselves through continued education and training specific to our areas of expertise. The truth, though, is that human capital cannot be defined in economic terms. What we are able to accomplish is 100% dependent upon how we see our self-worth. The value we are able to provide to our organizations, as well as to our communities, is only limited by how valuable we see ourselves. Often, it is when we compare our abilities to those around us that we are blinded by the unique characteristics that allow us to provide value to the group as a whole. The strongest asset we will ever have is the realization that what makes us unique is what increases the collective human capital. We are all valuable because of our ability to improve the quality of life for those around us, but only when we are able to see strength in what others would deem to be weakness. We owe it our communities to take stock of who we are and of what we are able to create so that we can affect lasting change for those now, and for those yet to come. A fish may not be able to climb a tree, but when put in water, it can swim the seven seas. How we see ourselves, how we view our self-worth, can be our strongest asset or our greatest weakness. What it takes is realizing that how we see ourselves determines how we see the world, and how we are able to take care of it. Beauty does not lie in the eye of the beholder, it lies in how we see ourselves. It would mean a lot to us if you read today's full blog post at Medium.com under @claytonjjensen (Beauty does not lie in the eye of the beholder, it lies in how we see ourselves.) #AlbertEinstein #QuoteOfTheDay #SelfWorth #YouAreBeautiful #CreateSomething #YouAreAGenius #HumanCapital

Build a Personal Brand of Which Others Want to be a Part It’s important to build a personal brand because it’s the only thing you’re going to have. Your reputation online, and in the new business world is pretty much the game, so you’ve got to be a good person. You can’t hide anything, and more importantly, you’ve got to be out there at some level.” – Gary Vaynerchuk ~ CEO of VaynerMedia Every interaction we make on a day-to-day basis, every connection, everything we do, is branding. We are all CEO’s of our own company, and because of this, we need our differentiating factor to be the way we market ourselves. No longer are the days of representing ourselves by what’s written on a paper-made resume. What defines us is how we treat others, both in person, as well as through the digital footprint that we create. While at work we are provided a great platform to build our personal brand, especially within our specific industry. We have access to individuals who have knowledge that we can benefit from and connections that we need. We must tap into the intellectual capital of those we work alongside to ensure that we absorb as much solid information and positive business practices as possible. We also have access to customers, who by buying from us, have shown they have a need we know how to fill. We need to use each opportunity that we have to get to know our specific customer base so that we can better create demand for ourselves. The consumers are providing us endless amounts of data for which we can use to further our personal brands, and later down the line, bring a product or service to market that we know they need. Branding ourselves while at work is about standing out from the crowd... “Often the difference between a successful person and a failure is not one [who] has better abilities or ideas, but the courage that one has to bet on one’s ideas, to take a calculated risk – and to act.” – Andre Malraux ~ French novelist, art theorist and former Minister of Cultural Affairs An idea is like a bubble floating away on a summer’s breeze. But that idea means nothing if we are willing to let it go, if we don’t hold onto it with all we’ve got. Great ideas are important but their inherent value lies in our ability to put them into action. It is great ideas that change the world; if we did not have them we would think the world was still flat. Aesop articulates the difference between having an idea and implementing it in his famous fable about the family of mice and their nemesis the cat. For years the feisty feline had altered the way that the mice had lived in fear. Many ideas had been discussed but none had stuck until one day a young mouse spoke up. He exclaimed that in order to curtail the cat’s antics they should string a bell around her neck in order to know where she was at all times. The other mice were overjoyed at the idea until one of the elders chimed in. He agreed that it was a good idea but asked who would be the one brave enough to put the bell around the neck of their antagonist. Aesop eloquently details for his audience that ideas are only as valuable as our ability to implement them. Many an idea has come and gone, unexecuted upon. The person who has the idea is important, but it is the one who capitalizes on the idea who makes the largest impact. Great ideas are remembered, but those who make them a reality never die... It would mean a lot to us if you read today's full blog post at Medium.com under @claytonjjensen (Great ideas that are executed upon allow us to shine a light for all to see.) #AndreMalraux #QuoteOfTheDay #ThomasEdison #Lightbulb #GreatIdeas #NeverGiveUp

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” – Martin Luther King, Jr. Equality is everything. There are so many things in life that we have no control over. We did not choose where we were born, to whom we were born, or even what gender we were to be. We did not choose our race or socioeconomic class, each of these things were out of our control from the beginning. And because of that, we should not be judged by the things in life that we cannot control. But no matter what life has thrown at us we have the ability to love equally. There is nothing in life that we can’t accomplish when men and women work alongside one another as equal partners for good. The cornerstones of equality are honesty, kindness, and compassion, and when we build our foundations upon them, we will be immovable. Even in 2017 we know that racism and gender inequality continue to run rampant in our society. We will be unable to overcome such adversities if we don’t acknowledge that they are just as important now as they were 100 years ago. It is when we as communities collectively agree that we still have a long way to go in developing an equal nation that we are willing to make the journey together. We need to hold everyone accountable because our lives are not our own, we live as an example for those around us and for those yet to come. We owe it to those who laid the groundwork before us to create a society where everything is based upon mutual love and respect. The true measure of an individual is how they treat those around them, especially those who others would deem unequal. No one is free until everyone is. The best relationships are built upon equality because this best allows us to show one another how much we appreciate life with them in it... “Don’t be afraid to show your vulnerability. Be transparent with your team, even when the truth may be unpopular or inconvenient.” – Bill George ~ Former CEO of Medtronic and a professor at Harvard Business School As human beings, we trust because of what we know, not because of what we don’t. Blind trust is not trust at all; we can only have confidence in someone because of what they allow us to see. We may have heard of the many attributes that makes someone trustworthy but there is big distinction between the expectations we may have and the convictions we know to be forthright. As leaders, we can only ask our co-workers to trust what we have shown them. It needs to go beyond leading through a glass window; we need to ensure that there are no barriers between us and those we work alongside. There is the fear that being too transparent will make us look vulnerable and will disallow for those around us to believe that we are the one to follow. But it is our ability to be vulnerable that shows our humanity. It is when we allow others to see that we are just like them and deal with the same issues that they do, that we become more authoritative, not less. We are able to problem-solve that much more quickly when we lead transparently. By getting everything out on the table we strengthen the resolve of the group around us because our mission becomes their purpose. This forces the team to work closer together now that they know the challenges they may face and they know more about the person for whom they are working. When we are transparent we set a precedent for others to do the same. Relationships are strengthened when we show others that what brings us closer together is knowing that we all deal with the same insecurities. This creates not only a promotion of trust in the leader, it allows those around us to trust one another that much more so... It would mean a lot to us if you checked out today's full blog post at Medium.com under @claytonjjensen (Transparent leadership is about shining a light so that others can see.) #BillGeorge #QuoteOfTheDay #Medtronic #Leadership #BeTransparent

“When I hear people debate the ROI of social media it makes me remember why so many businesses fail. Most businesses are not playing the marathon. They’re playing the sprint. They’re not worried about lifetime value and retention. They’re worried about short-term goals.” – Gary Vaynerchuk Social media engagement is like exercising, you get out what you put in. We know that eating healthy and exercising are integral parts to living a productive life. We know it is good for us and yet we perceive it to be such hard work that we likely do the bare minimum. We justify to ourselves that we are living healthy because we are doing something even when we are barely doing anything. The same is true for the way in which we engage our followers online. Exercising, like social media engagement, is about how consistent we are with what we do and how we make every second count. If we put in the hard work now we will reap the benefits down the line. Nothing great in life happens overnight; we have to be willing to consistently work towards the goals that we want to reach. Growing a brand, whether it be personal or business, is all about the long run. Every positive interaction that we make gets us one step closer to building something that other people are interested in, interested enough that they are willing to share it with their friends. Every post we create, every comment that we share, every direct message that we send, even every like that we click on is part of the branding process. If we go big and engage immensely one day, and then take multiple weeks off, the effort that we put in will go to waste. The same holds true for exercising in that working out vigorously one day does us no good if we are unable to follow it up... “Regardless of whatever I do, I know what my purpose is: to make a difference in people’s lives.” – Tim Tebow What does it mean to make a difference? It is the ability of each individual to utilize the resources that they have access to so that they can make their community a better place. The best way to do that is to harness the talents and skill sets that a person has while continually increasing their knowledge base by tapping into the intellectual capital of those around them. We know that we are able to appropriate our resources accordingly when we use them to create more resources rather than diminish them. It is when we do this that we are able to create a self-sustaining entity for good. When we develop something that takes care of itself while taking care of our society, we have produced a commodity that can change the world. In order to do this efficiently we can’t be wasteful with our time, our money, or even the way we market and choose to produce our product or service. It is our responsibility to the other members of our community to ensure that we don’t waste the resources that we have access to. The social impact we are able to make is dependent upon being frugal with what we have while continually working to create something new. If we just focus on the profit and not on the social impact we can make, our driving force will only be money. As much as we may enjoy having access to capital, we won’t be driven as hard because sometimes money does not have enough inherent value for which we are willing to sacrifice our time. When our purpose for working is instead other people, we are less likely to take the easy way out because it is no longer what, but for whom we are working. This inevitably increases the value proposition that a company is able to provide to its customers as well as to its employees... It would mean a lot to us if you checked out today's full blog post at Medium.com under @claytonjjensen (The difference that we are able to make is dependent upon how hard we are willing to work for others.) @timtebow #TimTebow #MakeADifference #MakeAnImpact #Purpose #Leadership #LiveForOthers

“Leadership is unlocking people’s potential to become better.” – Bill Bradley ~ Former professional basketball player and U.S. Senator We love the feeling of being on a team because we are surrounded by a group of people working towards a common goal. There is an undeniable joy that comes over us when we are amongst others with whom we share a common interest because it makes us feel like we are a part of something bigger than just ourselves. We love the comradery that is associated with being a part of team as there is an ethereal beauty that comes along with the feeling of being accepted. While we enjoy being part of a group, each one us yearns to be noticed individually. We all want to be the one who is up in the bottom of the ninth inning and has the game-winning hit. The thought of the crowd cheering for our accomplishments is unquestionably human because we like the feeling of being special. We want to be the one who is called on stage by our favorite rock star just like we want to work for a company where the CEO congratulates us personally on the effort that we put in. We all want to feel special and when someone makes us feel appreciated we instinctively want to be that person who was noticed. We enjoy it so much that once we have felt that way we will do whatever it takes to receive those accolades again. It is not money or promotions that push us forward, it is positive affirmation and acceptance for who we are and what we do that makes us work harder. Too often we act in accordance with the person we think we are rather than the person we want to be. We rationalize that we are okay with acting a certain way because that’s how we see ourselves. Just like we need to dress for the job we want to have, so too should we act in accordance with the person we want to be. It is what we see when we look in the mirror that shapes our actions as well as limits us from what we can accomplish...
