Hiking around the trails of Bighorn Hills was one of Jo's favorite activities. One would think that it was a quiet, isolating kind of affair, but they'd learned that it was quite the opposite. There was hardly a time they went out and didn't run into somebody else. This was the case as four familiar dogs approached them, drawing a grin on their face. It wasn't long before the owner called out after them.
"No, I'm here to kill you," Jo called back casually. They began to approach her with the dogs in tow, alternately petting each of them. "First I had to befriend your puppies so they'd let me get close. Then, I had to get you alone in the woods." Once they were close enough, they straightened and lunged out, wrapping a hand around Ty's neck. The grip was firm, though hardly damaging against the thick, solid muscles that drove Jo crazy. "Then, I getcha," they whispered, squeezing her throat in a way that would likely feel familiar to many of their previous escapades. Honestly, Jo couldn't remember what had torn them apart last time. In this moment, they were more than happy to let the past stay the past.

closed starter out in the forest for @jo-ann-moore
With four big dogs it was almost a requirement to get out in the evenings for a hike just to let them burn the energy off that they all had. Ty had loaded them all up and headed out to a familiar trail, letting the dogs roam as they pleased as she padded along the pathway. The dogs had mostly just been playing and exploring around where Tyler was, but she could sense the shift in their attention just before all four went darting away. Eyebrows narrowing, Tyler took off at a slightly quicker pace to see where they were going, eyes rolling when she saw all four of them now eagerly circling a familiar face, bouncing up for attention from the other. "Are you trying to kidnap my dogs?" she called out, lifting a brow towards Jo. Tyler couldn't recall the last time they'd seen each other, but she could only assume that it had ended poorly since they were in a phase of not hanging out.

Continued from here with @albietorreschef
If Jo was ruining the peaceful good times of the other patrons, they either didn't notice or didn't care. They didn't bother lowering their volume, nor did they censor any of their language. Maybe Albie didn't want to argue, but that didn't stop them. "That's stupid. Obviously the artist was thinking of something when they made this. Either it was a beach or it wasn't. Tee-bee-eytch, the fact that I can't tell means they did a pretty bad job."
By now it was clear what Jo's position on art was, but they'd elaborate anyway. "Yeaaaaaah, not really. You know that saying about watching paint dry? That's how I feel after the paint dries too," they said, looking back at the painting with a vague sense of distaste. "I dunno. Just never ~captured my imagination~ I guess," they said, wiggling their fingers to emphasize the whimsy of it all.
However, their attention was drawn back to something he said earlier. "What do you mean raised in it, though? Were your parents like, painters or something?" They asked, with genuine curiosity. In all of their hiking conversations, Jo couldn't remember if they ever touched base on his heritage.

Jo smirked as their guess was confirmed. "I have an eye for these kinds of things," they replied with a wink, taking a sip of their coffee. They tucked away their phone as they figured they could finish their playlist later. This was far more interesting. "Oh-em-gee, where in LA? I lived in Highland Park for years," they explained. "Lived" was probably a bit of a misnomer, considering they spent most of those years couchsurfing and mooching off various relationships. But Highland Park was where they stayed the longest.
They couldn't help but cringe and laugh at the misfortune. "Actually, you just missed the worst of it. End of the year is usually the coldest with the most snow, then things start to warm up. Though our standards what "warm" mean probably vary a lot," they snorted, shaking their head. "Get used to cardigans and jackets in your wardrobe."

Samara hadn't expected to be greeted with such enthusiasm, especially while asking someone to share their table but clearly she'd happened upon someone extremely friendly and for that, she was thankful. "Thank you," she chuckled softly as she took the seat across from the other before making a face as the other accurately guessed that Samara was a newbie. "Is it that obvious?" She chuckled before taking a sip of her coffee. "I just got in a few days ago actually..I'm from LA." She told the other with a bright smile before glancing outside. "So it's safe to say that I picked the worst time to make the move since I'm not really used to temperatures like these...how bad does it normally get in the dead of winter?"

Jay listened, discreetly taking a sip of their coffee as they let Thea introduce herself. They had to admit, she was a natural. A lot of people got really nervous being on the air and would ramble, but this lady got right to the point. They could respect that.
"That's insane. Their retirement benefits must be wild," Jay teased in reply before hopping into more questions. "So I gotta ask--what is a speakeasy exactly? Now, I got a C- minus in history--remember, C's get degrees, people--but from what I remember, speakeasies were a thing way back when alcohol was illegal. Obviously, alcohol is very legal now, so why do we need a speakeasy? What makes it different than any of the other bars around town?"

Again she felt a bit nerves building up inside of her as Jay's voice came on to let her know they were about to be live. Hearing the name of the song that had just been playing, it was a very clever song choice she had to admit. Taking a quiet deep breath, she listened to Jay's introduction, fidgeting a bit in her own chair. But as the introduction went on she started to gain that confidence back. "Hey there. I'm Thea Harris. I was born and raised in Providence Peak. And I took over the speakeasy after my grandfather passed. He started the speakeasy in the late sixties. And we've been up and running ever since. We have had a bit of change over the years, but stepping into the church still feels the same. We still have some of our employees who actually started working for my grandfather in the sixties who still work here today." She knew she was talking more about the speakeasy than herself, but that was the whole reason she was on in the first place to promote the business.

location: In Office at Holy Spirits, On the Air with Jay on 96.8 The Peak
character: Jo-Ann Moore aka ‘Jay’ @jo-ann-moore
There was still the quiet din of the speakeasy in the background, which was hard to avoid, but she had made sure to shut the door and tape a note on it to let her staff know she was not to be disturbed at the moment. She sat in the office chair that used to be her grandfather’s, a chair that her whole body used to fit on the cushion. Rubbing at the faded arms as she waited on the line. Jo had told her that they would let her know that it was almost her time with Jay by going from hold music to the set up to their next segment. Plenty of people were aware of Holy Spirits, but it didn’t hurt to do some marketing, and what better way to do that then with a popular segment at about the time that people would be looking for a place to go at night. She didn’t know why she was starting to get a bit nervous though while waiting, starting to hear Jay as they spoke and waited for them to address her. “Hey, can you hear me?”

--
Jay sat in the swivel chair in the studio, spinning back and forth as they prepared themselves for the next segment of the show. A cup of Deja Brew coffee say dangerously close to the equipment, but they liked to live on the edge--and they wouldn’t be the one paying for it, anyway. They’d put their interviewee on hold as she called in a bit early and Jay didn’t feel like awkwardly waiting on the line and answering questions. At this point, they had their routine down pat and they found it best to just throw their interviewees in the deep end and let them swim.
At this point, the song was coming to a close and Jay pushed the chair to the other side of the panel, where they pressed a button to take Thea off hold. “Absolutely positutely. Alright, so here’s how things are going to go. I’m going to give the countdown and give my segway into the interview. I introduce your business, then give you the chance to introduce yourself. From there, I’ll guide the conversation with questions, but no worries, there’s no script. Just pretend we’re chatting over coffee, yeah?” They barely gave her the chance to respond before moving on.
“Okay we are live in 3...2...1!” They pressed another button, putting them both on air. “And that was Speakeasy by Parade Punch. That brings us into tonight’s segment of Crosstalk where I have with me Thea Harris, the owner of Providence Peak’s very own speakeasy, Holy Spirits. This jazzy little booze den is located in the basement of the old church just outside downtown. Thea, why don’t you tell us a little more about yourself and your fine establishment?”

96.8 The Peak
The Peak is Providence Peak's local late night radio show hosted by a person who just calls themselves "Jay". Of course, this is actually Jo, but they've found having a secret alias is a lot of fun, and gives them more freedom to say what they want without any consequences. In this regard, although they use an androgynous voice on the air, Jo will usually refer to Jay with he/him pronouns when scheduling interviews and talking about the show. They claim that they are an administrative assistant at the radio station, making sure that everything runs smoothly. They claim they can even get you an in with Keola and Mya, if you're lucky.
The Peak consists of several different segments. There's no legitimate schedule to when these segments occur--some nights it's entirely music, while other nights can be hours of talking. It really depends what night you decide to tune in.
Beat Cred
Beat Cred is the most common segment of the show, which is just music. Jay will play music from all genres and decades, though they will sometimes have daily or even weekly themes. Anyone can call in and request a song, though Jay holds the right to veto anything they're not feeling.
OOC: At the beginning of every month, I am going to make a post of Jo requesting songs of a certain theme/genre. Muns will then be able to reply to the post either IC or OOC requesting as many songs as they like. After two weeks, I will post a playlist made up of all the requested songs.
Crosstalk
Crosstalk is an interview segment where they bring someone local on the air to interview them about their business, life, and gossip. Interviewees are not brought into the station, rather they call in and Jay will talk to them over the phone. Interviewees are often enticed with the lure of being able to market their business, but Jay won't let them get away without a personal question or two. It's given The Peak a reputation for drama, which just rakes in the ratings.
OOC: I am always up for doing interview threads so please hmu if your character would be interested! Or, if you're interested and your character isn't, hmu so Jo can annoy and pressure them into doing it.
Jaytalking
This segment is literally just Jay shooting the shit about whatever random topic comes to mind. Sometimes they'll talk for 10 minutes, sometimes they'll spend an entire hour ranting about minor inconveniences. They end the segment by opening up the lines for people to call in and give their responses, often prompting short conversations. In between calls, they will play music--usually on-the-nose songs about whatever they were discussing.
OOC: These will usually be open starters, but if you want to do a closed thread about a topic of choice, let me know!

laykenparker:
where: the teacher’s lounge when: sunday, february 19th late night status: open ( @providencepeakstarters )
Layken had been in town less than a week and found herself at the diner every single night. Maybe it was the quiet that got to her or she was too antsy to sit in her apartment while she had things that she needed to get done but it was the stillness of the night and the low light in the back booth that soothed her. It was unlike New York in every single possible way and while she missed the hustle and bustle of the city, it felt like a much needed change in pace. Pages of her latest script, story boards, and binders galore crowded the small booth giving just enough room for her grilled cheese and tomato soup sat alongside of her laptop. Between taking bites and reading over her emails, she glanced over to the table a few feet away from her. “Do you know a good place around here that would be ideal for a first kiss? Not too cliché but something more raw?”
Tumblr media
--
The best part about The Teacher’s Lounge was that it served breakfast all day. It made Jo feel like less of a weirdo on a completely different circadian rhythm than everyone else if they could have breakfast after they woke up in the late afternoon. They had a stack of blueberry pancakes that they munched away on, happily listening in on other people’s conversations around them. Which is why it came to a surprise when the conversation was turned to them directly. “Hmmm?” They responded as they turned to the woman, their mouth full of cake and a little bit of blueberry stuck to the side of their mouth. With a swallow, they wiped the shmutz off their mouth and licked it off their finger. “Raw, huh? I think the most raw place I’ve ever kissed someone in this town was the bathroom of Le Cirque. Someone was throwing up in the stall next to us,” they explained. “If you’re looking for non-cliche, I’d recommend the gas station, the pharmacy, the Crane Brother’s Distillery.” That last one was just because they never passed up a chance to fuck with the Cranes. “Why? You trying to seal the deal with a new lover?”

Jo was starting to run low on interview candidates. They liked to keep people scheduled up to a month ahead, but March was already starting to look bare. Considering The Peak was a local show, they tried to stay local in their candidacy but the fact of the matter was some people just didn't want to be questioned. Jo couldn't understand it, personally. Who wouldn't take the opportunity to shine in a free spotlight?
They'd made their way to the art gallery, figuring they hadn't plumbed the depths of the art world for interviewees. This was probably because they personally found art to be super fucking boring, but surely there was some way to make it sound interesting, right? It'd be a challenge at the very least.
They were on their way to the curator's office when they spotted a familiar face, which quickly diverted their path. They walked up behind him, their lips pursing as they considered the painting. "Suuuure. If you're into like-- beaches? It's supposed to be a beach, right?" They stepped forward and crossed their arms, turning their attention to him. "If it ain't Alberto Whore-res. I didn't know you were into this kinda crap!"
Tumblr media
location: fine arts club
status: open (capping at 3 please!)
Albie always loved art. It was one of the few things he inherited from his mother. He had often considered his work in the kitchen an art, and had tried to enjoy getting himself to art museums and galleries whenever he could. The gallery in Providence Peak was no exception. He had been on the same floor for over an hour now, taken with one specific piece for the last twenty minutes or so, drinking in the detail. From the corner of his eye, he noticed someone approach, and shuffled a bit further to the left of the painting, to give them room to examine it themselves.
“Rather spectacular, right?” He pondered aloud, mostly to himself, though he wouldn’t mind at all if the person beside him spoke back.

samara-puri:
status: open for @providencepeakstarters (capping at 4) location: deja brew
It went without saying that one of the first places that Samara would end up frequenting would be a coffee shop. She was quite predictable that way and so when she’d spotted the cute place, she couldn’t even help herself from heading inside and introducing herself. She spoke with the barista about her favourites and got recommendations and knew at this point that this was going to be one of her favourite places. She’d just picked up her drink from the counter, ready to take a seat when she realized most of the spots were filled. There was one table that had two seats open and so she headed there, hating the awkwardness of introducing herself to new people and feeling them silently judging her. “Hi–the place got really packed in the last five minutes or so, can I sit here and share your table just while I finish my coffee and banana loaf? I’d really appreciate it…”
Tumblr media
--
Considering the field Jo worked in, it was no surprise that one of their many addictions was coffee. They were here for their afternoon pick me up, having just woken up less than an hour ago. They sipped on their coffee and scrolled through their phone, throwing together a list of songs they’d be playing that night. February had been a month of endless love songs and they figured it was time to shake it up--maybe a bunch of angry break up songs to appease the haters.
When they realized someone was talking to them, they looked up and smiled. “Yeah, of course!” They replied with a grin, suddenly much more chipper. Talking to people was another one of their great addictions. “This place can get pretty crazy around this time. You new around here or something?” It was a complete guess, but most of the locals knew these kinds of cycles like day and night.

Name: Jo-Ann Moore Age: 31 Gender: Non-binary (They/she) Occupation: Late Night Radio Host for 96.8 The Peak Neighborhood: Bighorn Hills Sexuality: Queer (all genders) Relationship Status: Single Birthplace: Unknown Providence Residency: 2 years (but has lived here various times in their life)
FULL BIO | WANTED CONNECTIONS
PERSONALITY:
Jo is vivacious, looking for love, laughs, and fun wherever they go. They tend to approach people as laid-back and outgoing, showing a more wild side once they get to know you (which for them, isn't long). While they can be a great time to be around, they can also be flippant and obtuse, especially when it comes to other people's feelings. They have a hard time with commitment and communication, making for difficulties in their relationships.
TL;DR:
(tw: abandonment)
Jo was abandoned at a bus stop as a child. The police were unable to find their home or family and they were placed in the foster care system.
While they had a hard time adjusting to their turbulent life, they found comfort in television and acting, taking on different personas as needed.
They went to high school in Providence Peak where they were a bubbly theater kid who dated around.
At 18, they aged out of the system and moved to Los Angeles to become an actor.
It did not take them long to give up on this dream, instead moving around the country and taking odd jobs to support themselves.
Throughout their 20s they made many connections and had many relationships, most of which they ended. They passed through Providence Peak a couple times but would ultimately move on to the next place.
The thing that finally tied them down was getting a job as the late night radio host on 96.8 The Peak. They work under the secret alias "Jay", where they play late night music, interview people in their "Crosstalk" session, and shoot the shit in their "Jaytalking" session.
They've explored their gender and sexuality for a long time. They/them are their primary pronouns and what they refer to themselves as, but they don't correct people who gender them as a woman. Their queer identity is very important to them, and they will date/hook-up/sleep with anyone and everyone.
The live in a cabin in Bighorn Hills near the radio tower. They can often be found hiking at dusk and are always down for any outdoors adventure.
Loves animals but cannot handle having a pet of their own. They'll gladly fawn over yours, though.
Due to their late night job, they spend most of the day sleeping. They wake up in the afternoons and will be out on the town during the evening before their show begins.
