What helped for me was reframing: "Would I be annoyed if someone sent this exact message to me?" and the answer is always absolutely not, I would be delighted! So I can reasonably assume this person I'm reaching out to would also be delighted. I've been a lot more proactive with building friendships in the past 3ish years, and have made more friends in that time than in the previous 10, because I stopped being so scared of rejection and being perceived as annoying! And to be fair, I do still feel annoying sometimes and even get the vibe that other people find me annoying... but only people who I didn't click with either, so it ends up not really being a big deal if someone doesn't reciprocate my friendship gestures - I just move on to foster/find those who will.

what they don't tell you about making friends is you gotta be a lil annoying. you gotta push past the fear of "what if they don't want to talk to me" and simply ask someone how their day is going, send a meme. you cannot connect to people if you're both just awkwardly waiting for the other to start.
