Propaganda
David Niven (Raffles, Around the World in 80 Days)—What's weird is every picture of him is kinda funny-looking but when you see him in action he has this almost feline quality to him, this withdrawn gentleness, that's totally unexpected considering he's very Upright™ and Englishy English™. there's just a soft tenderness there that he brings so easily to every part, no matter how restrained. ignore the pics of him with his weird lil nose and Bertie Wooster face and imagine this man purring something vaguely british at you over a cup of tea while radiating cool, sexy attentiveness and restrained uppercrust care
Paul Robeson (Showboat, The Emperor Jones)—this man's life was fucking wild [link to his Wikipedia]
This is round 2 of the bracket. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage man.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]

decolonizepalestine.com is an easy to navigate website run by two palestinians which breaks down common myths about palestine and provides a reading list organized by a wide variety of categories ranging from history and culture to media and censorship. it’s a good starting point to use if you want to learn more about the modern day situation in palestine and understand the truth behind myths that have been perpetuated about israel’s occupation of palestine.

Every time I see another ibuprofen post on this site I'm like STOP
STOP
Stop.
Take that after a meal. Take it with a big glass of water. Don't take it on an empty stomach EVER. Don't take it with alcohol. You will destroy your stomach. You will end up with an ulcer. You will vomit blood. I'm not exaggerating.
Yes, you. Yes, it will happen to cute little you. With your cute little bottle of miracles. Ibuprofen really does that to your body.

sometimes a post will generalize about americans and be semi or mostly right but obviously has only interacted with one specific region or class or race and ill do my smug little american chortle that they're stereotyping poorly and then immediately after there'll be a post saying that americans cant live without large bevvy and if you seen an american without a large beverage in arms reach thats actually a distress sign and possibly even a medical emergency and im like oh that's true 100% for all of us. yes.

Expanding a thought from a conversation this morning:
In general, I think "Is X out-of-character?" is not a terribly useful question for a writer. It shuts down possibility, and interesting directions you could take a character.
A better question, I believe, is "What would it take for Character to do X?" What extremity would she find herself in, where X starts to look like a good idea? What loyalties or fears leave him with X as his only option? THAT'S where a potentially interesting story lies.
In practice, I find that you can often justify much more from a character than you initially dreamed you could: some of my best stories come from "What might drive Character to do [thing he would never do]?" As long as you make it clear to the reader what the hell pushed your character to this point, you've got the seed of a compelling story on your hands.
