hello Joe! I loved your film about Self Compassion (very useful exercise, too!) and I was wondering how you animated this : was is it made with Flash/Animate? or After Effects...?
Hey stenopee!I'm glad you liked it!I made all the elements in illustrator, then animated them in after effects. Mainly using shape layers and a plugin called 'battleaxe rubber hose' which is really useful for doing the characters limbs!Joe x

The Earth and I
vimeo
Heyyyyyyyyy look! I helped ol’ buddy ol’ pal Jack Hudson make this wee promo for this GREAT book that he’s spent the last few years illustrating.
The book in question is The Earth and I. Which is a collection of essays about the world we live in collated by James Lovelock.
Wonderful sounds by the ever-talented Skillbard.
Check it out and buy it HERE.

Hi Joe, so I've got a weird, rambling question here... Basically I'm not a designer/artist by trade but about 6 months ago I was given an animation task by the firm I work for, and then another, and another, until now making animated videos has become my entire job. I've also decided that I love it! I'm still not very good though, and I came across your website, and I LOVED Waldgeist, and I'd really love to know more about how you made this? Is this something I'm allowed to ask? Thanks, Dan
You are allowed to ask anything your heart desires Dan!
I animated it mainly in photoshop and did a load of comping in after effects.
Does that help?
Thanks for loving my film.

Hello, Daniel has a Thunder tee shirt - very well worn and rather faded. Any chance you have any still knocking around - size S? Thanks, Alison (Amy & Daniel's mum!)
Hi Alison! Sorry I only just saw this!!
You’re best off asking the guys at Get Cutie/Boy Parker. I think they only did one printing run of them, and the guy never liked them/me, so he probably wont do another one I’m afraid!!
I hope you are well! x

How long did it take you to animate The Waldgeist & Me?
Hey Anonymous,
It took me a month or so to write, storyboard and make an animatic.
Then actual production took about 6 months.

What platforms do you usually animate on?
Hey Anonymous,
If I’m doing hand-drawn stuff I prefer using photoshop.
I’m also a fan of using illustrator and after effects. I do so a lot when I work commercially.
How’s that?

SO!
The Waldgeist & Me showed at Message2Man festival in St. Petersburg! And then at Anim’est festival in Bucharest!
Both festivals were great! As were all the wonderful people I met. It turns out Russians are really nice and they dont all hate gays and it turns out that Romanians are all really nice and pretty crazy.

Here I am improving British-Russian relations. It was all fun and games until the photographer said he was American.

The award ceremony in St Petersburg was pretty over the top...

Then I saw the second largest buiding in the world in Bucharest. It is really big.

This is me. Talking to people about how great I am.

Here I am, talking to some more people about how great I am.
All in all, much fun was had. If you ever get a chance to go to these festivals definitely take it!
Also, a massive thanks to British Council Film and the BFI for giving me some money to go!

I helped the good honest folk at Moth to make this little guy.
It features beauteous design and direction from Margaux! And a load of really good animator-types worked on it as well.
I really want to know if they stayed together after neckin n that.
Probably not.
Watch it. It's good.
