The first time KP!Melody lets Joel put a wild chalking on her. Not permanently, just letting it hang out like a cat in a lap. It is terrifying, because it moves like an eldritch creature, clearly only being coaxed, not controlled. All its limbs are teeth, and they are sharp, lighting nerves even when they don't pierce. Like a hair that has fallen on your arm and no matter what you do, you can't get it off. But that hair is a thousand infinitesimal knives that can tear you open with just the lightest pressure. It skitters along her, and Joel is holding her wrist in a death grip because if that connection breaks, he doesn't know if he can get the chalking back, or if it will remember that it's supposed to care about her like he does. He would never let them hurt her, even as he holds her so hard she bruises. Her heart is in her throat. He is ecstatic. This is the closest he's ever felt to her. This is the first time Melody has ever seen him as something other than a human.

1. LOVE the way you describe how the chalklings feel on the skin and like the nervousness of knowing this thing could kill her and the only thing stopping them from doing said killing is joel

2. The TRUST THEY SHOW EACHOTHER T.T the fact that melody trusts joel to put a living weapon on her and for joel to show that non-human part of him to melody and trust her not to tell anyone or hold it against him!!!

3. The combines stress and nervousness of having that thing and the elation and euphoria of being known and trusted?!??!?!?!?!

The best thing about aus is that you can just retcon stuff to make thematic sense

Killing pigeons was named after i misremembered the name of the song "poisoning pigeons" by tom lherer? Nonoono

Its named that because in this au joel is associated with pigeon moteifs (pigeons being viewed as ignored boring city pests, but only having become as such because humanity abandoned them)

and its ambiguous title wich makes you question wether the pigeons are doing the killing or being the ones killed, is representative of his dual nature of being both victim and victimizer at once

Something interesting i noticed about forgottens when reading through trit again, is that forgottens and shadowblazes seems to be one and the same, or atleast variations upon eachother. In the mansion fitch refers to the forgotten as a 'forgotten shadowblaze' and this is the only point in the book where the two concepts are even associated. But theyre shown to both be able to grant rithmatic powers.

Which leads me to the point. What makes a forgotten shadowblaze 'forgotten'? Referencing the excerpt from 'origins of power' (the book joel borrowed from the rithmatic section) and what we see of joels inception i theorize that forgotten shadowblazes are exactly that, forgotten. Meaning that during the inception either they chose to appear but not to bind themselves to the vessel (the rithmatist) or that the vessel somehow rejected them.
