It’s 2025. BBC Sherlock ended 8 years ago. The last season was so bad the fans didn’t even want to talk about it when it came out. Occasionally a post resurfaces where we all laugh at struggling to plug our phones in and being called alcoholics. Every time, there are more and more people in the comments who don’t get the joke. There are two currently airing Sherlock Holmes audio dramas that both portray a queer Holmes (as well as several other excellent queer characters), and one of them now has Holmes and Watson in a canonical romantic relationship. There’s an adorable crowdfunded short film where Watson plans Holmes’ birthday party and they flirt with each other, share a bed, plan their retirement, and kiss on the mouth. A video game about retired beekeeper Holmes just released where he arranges a romantic picnic so he can finally tell Watson how he feels. A popular graphic novelist just released the first part of a queer comic book retelling of the complete Holmes canon and had to do several rounds of preorders because she kept selling out too fast. Sherlock is garbage and here’s why has 15 million views on YouTube. Nature is healing. ❤️🐝

the thing about holmes and watson is that its tempting to read it as a weirdguy x normie relationship but thats a misreading of watson who is also, and this is important, a freak

There’s a distance between Jim and Sebastian that they can’t seem to close no matter how much they may want to. When they have sex it's rough and heated. They kiss like they’re starving, almost as if that is their one and only chance to touch each other.

They do this to themselves. A big part of it is that they’ve created roles for themselves and they act accordingly. Jim can’t show affection. He’s supposed to be this untouchable crime lord who shows no mercy. He’s cold, uncaring. People have called him the devil, and Sebastian practically worships him. He adores this version of Jim and surely wouldn’t like him if he went soft.

Jim hasn't even fully admitted to himself that Sebastian might actually mean something to him. And the longer he can keep pretending, the better, as far as he is concerned. So he deftly shuts down most attempts of physical contact by Sebastian.

Sebastian definitely pushes his luck, but never takes it too far. He tries sometimes to sneak a kiss, but plays it off as casual, maybe even a bit of a joke. He’s never been sincere in his life, why start now? He wouldn’t know how to, and even if he did, Jim wouldn’t appreciate it. Feelings are idiotic, something for the common man. Jim’s certainly above it, so Sebastian pretends he is too.

He plays coy but really Sebastian is extremely careful in the way he plays this game. He monitors Jim’s mood and studies his reactions. It's not the first time Jim has gotten angry with him for crossing a line. He doesn’t want to ruin what they have now, even if he yearns for more. He’s just an employee. Jim's never given him a reason to think he’s anything more, after all.

Jim does flirt back sometimes, but his words drip with sarcasm. The taste of it on his lips is bitter. They both make a mockery of themselves when they’re getting a little too close to something real.

It’s a game they’re both losing.

Sometimes Jim wishes Sebastian would push just a bit further. He can feel Sebastian’s eyes on him at all times. When they lay in bed and Jim’s turned his back on him, Sebastian imagines what it would be like to hold him and press against him. He never does.

A thing they don't tell you until it's too late is that training your memory to be good at one thing comes at the cost of everything else. I can edit documents in my head and quote conversations I had twenty years ago verbatim. This morning I reached into my purse and pulled out a jar of raspberry jam with absolutely no recollection of how it got there.
