Emmy swallowed as she placed the linens on the table. That was the only reason why she was in the chamber. She smiled, softly. “Yes, your Majesty,” she said, walking over and sitting down besides the queen. “I cannot play, I’m afraid.”
“How delicious,” Joséphine said, briskly re-arranging her sheet music. “I get to play tutor. This should amuse for an hour or two! What are you called, little pet?”

“Well ye certainly don’t look like a miserable creature, or inches from death, Yer Majesty.” Cameron assured the Dowager Queen with a bow. “Of course, right away.”
“How diplomatic. Is it better manners to agree with a queen or contradict a queen? I never decided on that point, and now I find myself wondering how to approach the problem from the other end.”

“Come, come. If you feel up to playing, we’ll sing a little duet, you and I--if you won’t, or can’t, well.”
The Dowager Queen smiled a cruel little smile as she patted the empty space beside her on the harpsichord seat.
“I’ll insist anyway.”

marcodesavoia:
Marco had to criticize the priorities of his rather sickly father for sending him to France for no other reason than the fact that it was what every other noble seemed to be doing. Flocking to the newly opened country and engaging in age-old niceties. So long as he was here he would have to make the best of it, figure out the people whose voices made his skin crawl and who were to be avoided at all costs early on.
The prince was considering all of these things while staring across the gardens when he realized someone had come to stand in the line of his eyes. He bowed his head, smiling slightly, “It seems you have interrupted what must have been a foolishly blank look on my face.”
“Ah, you wear it well, my dear,” Joséphine said, opening and shutting her fan with a snap. “The world loves its fools well. Come and take a turn with me. I am very curious to hear about such a place as Italy. You know, I’ve never had the occasion to leave France? Not even once? It’s a tedious life, here at the chateau. Every day is a struggle to find something novel to amuse one’s self.”

seamstresskamala:
Surrounded by a vast array of fabrics working skillfully at her machine Kamala was in her element. As fulfilling as being able to say helping to dress the crème de la crème of French nobility and royalty was , sometimes it was an exhausting responsibility. The strict social etiquette was suffocating and her clients could be demanding to say the least. But right now the seamstress was content and focus on her work.Carefully processing a piece of satin through the machine Kamala was interrupted by foot steps approaching her.“How may I be of assistance?” she greeted while stopping lifting her foot off the pedal.
“You will assist me very satisfactorily if you happen to say anything amusing,” Joséphine murmured, sifting through the fabric. She came upon a sky blue satin. “But in lieu of that happy accident--embroidered with gold thread and pearls. What do you think? I find all my black dresses tiresome.”

“ MILLIONS of people in the world and somehow an idiot like you manages to land control. a pity for your people. “
“Millions? Can you count so high? I am retired from the occupation of ‘landing’ ‘control’--somewhat by circumstance--though I’m not sure I ever pitied a people once in my life. Do you find your people to be pitied often?”

“If ye just give me a second, I’ll be right with ye.”
“No, that will not do. Doesn’t a ‘dowager’ sound like a miserable creature just inches from death? Good God. Fetch me a shawl, or I will catch a chill and shorten the cord of existence a little further.”
