To The Moon autism rant lol

I've recently been replying the entire SigCorp series and I have a thought about the first game I would really like to share. Part of the reason why I love River's character is because she's in a way an antythesis to the manic pixie dream girl trope, or at least some sort of commenntary on it. Let me explain... The reason why the MPDG trope is viewed as harmful is the way it often romanticises (or borderline fetishises) autistic (or generally neurodivergent) traits in women without any understanding or consideration. The MPDG isn't her own character, only a vessle for the male lead to experiance character development. Her "quirkyness" is used as a plot device for a story that was never about her to begin with. And mind you, said quirkyness is usually just overly glamorised autism. This is exactly the way River is presented in Johnny's perspective. The game never explicitly uses the word "autism" in relation to her, but at this poit it's been very much confirmed that she was written as autistic. The thing is, even if Johnny sees River as a "manic pixie dream girl", showing interest in her "quirky" personality without any comsideration for the dificulties she faces while living in a world which fundametally wasn't built for her, the game makes it explicit that this is not the story it is trying to tell. Johnny falls for River because she's different from everyone he met before, yet can't handle her diagnosis. He likes how passionate she is about her special interests, but gets frustrated with her lack of understandig of social cues. And the best part is that it's never framed as River's fault. Both the two main character and certain side characters from Johnny's memories call him out on his lack of desire to understand her. Him refusing to borrow the book on "River's condition" from her psychiatrist isn't framed as the right decision and neithr is him trying to make improtant decisions for her. I think this quote from Isabelle (another female autistic character) sums it up pretty well

As much as Eva nad Neil like to remind themselves that River is not their patient, To The Moon is just as much of her story as it is Johnny's. River may function as a MPDG to Johnny, but as her core she's her own character. The game takes her issues seriously and humanises her. In that regards a game from 2011 does a much better job at representing autism than some of the more recent media.
