The IoT is, simply, when appliances -- both domestic and industrial -- are connected to the Internet. As for how we got to the point of where a toaster has its own Twitter feed, well, that’s a longer story.

The Web has created efficiencies in health care, telecommunications, safety, the environment, energy and in our cities. The convergence between machine and Internet, and between networks and services, will march toward 28 billion by 2020. Wearable technologies are poised to grow from 70 million worldwide shipments in 2015 to 248 million in 2017, according to Morgan Stanley. The Internet of Things will continue to transform and interconnect our cities and our lives.
For example, as part of a national wave of smart grid initiatives, utilities are upgrading their infrastructure to better manage power operations and minimize outages. Cities are also improving methods of parking management as they transition to automatic parking pay stations. And major capitals are moving to link free WiFi hotspots in downtown business districts. Around the nation, cities are deploying technology in numerous ways to streamline services and achieve greater efficiency.

The White House Correspondents Dinner, held annually in Washington, D.C., has evolved from a staid all-male gathering of journalists in 1920 to a gala event that attracts a cross-section of personalities, leaders and glitterati.

Derek Jeter rolled into Fenway Park last night for the final three games of his 20-year career. He’ll step up to the plate nine or so times, but he won’t set foot, defensively, on the infield dirt — opting instead to reserve the memory of his last inning at shortstop at Yankee Stadium. With the Yankees not making the playoffs for the second straight year, there will be no October magic this season. In essence, New York now reverts to the pre-Jeter team I grew up with, yet another reason why he matters.
When I was seven-years-old, No. 2 wasn’t a sure-fire future Hall of Famer. He was a Hall of Famer’s son, Dale Berra, that No. 2. The Yankees signed Berra before the 1985 season, which was four years after the Yankees last made the playoffs. They had lost the 1981 World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. I was only three-years-old, and I don’t remember a thing from that October.

The next mobile platform may be on wheels. Looking ahead to the future of cars, Nissan’s Amanda Donnelly doesn’t just see autonomous, self-driving rides, but a connected media suite that could be a perfect fit for digital advertisers.

So many startups have started down the same path toward success that they’ve hewn their own clichéd American success story: Work in a garage, get venture capital, get bought. These companies are partnering with Nissan's marketing innovation lab, which has a different philosophy.
