big part of the appeal of worf for me is that he's soooo susceptible to shame, in a world in which humanity is supposed to have moved on from social prejudice (whether or not that's true) we see the human and human-adjacent characters on tng deal with their failings and shortcomings or even other people's derision towards them and emerge with pride in themselves and the support of others, but for Worf the shame never really goes away, even when he is accepted and loved there's always that lingering sense that it's in spite of who he is and not because of it. and obviously it has to do with how consistently Othered he is like for all the writers like to put Data through it he has this respect for humanity and desire to become more human that endears him to characters and viewers alike, but Worf is neither human nor trying to be seen as human and has a complicated relationship to even being considered adjacent to humanity, so by default for the other characters (for whom humanity is central to their construction of the galaxy), showing Worf acceptance means flattening these aspects of him, so then by default drawing attention to the Otherness that they're smoothing away
like this ^. These are the people he loves and respects and wants approval from, but this is the form that approval comes in. he will never quite be able to fit that image, and he knows it, and he knows they're not trying to be hurtful but the opposite, which is why (imo) he has the greatest capacity for shame of any next gen character
#god that line is CRAZY#it’s so. like. I mean I don’t have anything to say because you already said it but GOD#worf#tng

the thing about chakotay is that he wants to trust people. he wants to hear people out and understand why it is they do what they do, and if he can understand you maybe he can help you. its why he goes after seska, maybe he can change her mind. its why he buys into vori propaganda, because anyone would fight back against a threat that evil. its why he tries to guide annorax toward new ways of rewriting history.
its why the biggest trust gaps between him and Janeway come when she's acting irrationally. torture doesn't work and it's morally wrong, what is happening, why can't I change her mind?

watching network shows like

#KIRA#I can remember the exact point in the ds9 pilot where I was like please I need kira to say fuck#I’m not usually a proponent of it in star trek I think it feels weird and kind of forced in nutrek but. for her I will make an exception.

HUH???
mentioned to my parents that my theater was rescreening stand by me tonight and my dad was like “oh have you seen that before?” yeah man you showed it to me in 2021 and it derailed my life so severely that among other things I’ve now had a star trek blog for over three years.
#I’m trying to figure out what might have triggered this like was it just ‘dad’?#would be really funny if it was ‘jerry o’connell’ in the tags though

on today’s edition of “there are incredibly specific things wrong with me but at least they’re really funny”: I had to look at the wikipedia page for teen wolf and was scrolling past the list of ten separate executive producers when I got absolutely clotheslined by rené echevarria. and I was like not only can I immediately reel off at least five tng or ds9 episodes written by him and the general hallmarks of his writing, I stole this guy’s fucking pitch.
#I wrote 28926 words about it#I say ‘stole.’ it’s been 30 years he wasn’t using it. that was just a funnier phrasing.#this is up there with the time I recognized kevin and matthew mcmanus in the credits of a movie#who wrote for and coproduced american vandal

this morning I went a little crazyinsane about roxy from kingsman (a thing that has sporadically happened to me since 2015) and then shortly after that I went a little crazyinsane about sito jaxa and then I had an extremely sobering moment of like. I think there might be a pipeline here.
#like there are PLENTY of differences they’re not the same character by any means#but. there are commonalities.

it’s about the way jaxa as a character only exists in the narrative as a result of wesley’s mistakes, but even when she becomes More in her own right she still has to exist in the shadow of the accident and his absence. they know her because of the crash, but they know it so well because he was one of their own. and it’s not about him, it’s about her and the ways she is trying to fix her life in the aftermath, but parts are inescapably about that shadow.
you go in for your physical or whatever and it’s your teammate’s mom. and maybe she tries to keep a professional distance and act like she doesn’t know you and the exact space between you, but when you don’t talk about something like that all you really do is talk about it. or maybe she crosses that distance to ask if you’ve heard from wesley lately, because she probably hasn’t, and even if she has it’s so clearly not really the truth. and you’re not gonna be able to explain to his mother who loves him the way only you understand each other, and the way you hate him and you don’t, and the way you sort of talked and sort of didn’t and probably aren’t talking now. she will be one of the last people you see and by then you probably haven’t figured out how to say anything about it even if you’d wanted to.
the accident would matter on your record anyway, but only matters this much on the enterprise because of him, and he doesn’t come back to deal with the consequences until after you’ve already died for them.
#one hates to make a female character’s story about a male character and so much isn’t#but so much inextricably is#it’s a function of the way she exists in the narrative even if she is also so much more than that#I never say anything new I only say things slightly differently than I’ve already said them <3#[guy who is addicted to second person pov voice] don’t worry about the pov shift. just don’t worry about it.#nova squadron

#insane dynamic. incredibly important to me.#mostly being friends through other people is already a weird relationship to navigate even before everything#I’ve said this before but the way that more than anyone else they spend the first duty trying to bargain with each other makes me crazyyyy#and then just. yeah. yeah.#bc you knowwwww jean doesn’t speak to them. so what remains is this weird fucked up thing#augh. auuuuuuuuuuuuugggh.#sito#wesley crusher#tng
