What busy month of art-making! I usually start a large undertaking such as this with subtle reluctance and doubt. I’m used to taking my time to consider a piece “finished” or “share-worthy”, so this took me waaaaaaay outside that comfort zone. But as it went along I found it very pleasurable to just draw, without my critical inner voice telling me that this next piece MUST be a masterpiece. It taught me to not just think about drawing things I see in my everyday life that look interesting, but actually take the time to sketch them out. Coming from a non-artistic academic path I find myself having to make excuses for why I make something, or what exactly it is that I make. I was even afraid to call myself an “artist” for the longest time because I felt like I was just doing it as a hobby, for fun. If I go around calling myself an artist, all the real artists are gonna call me out as the fraud I am. But it turns out you can make art for yourself that you also share (or even better, sell) to others. Call it whatever you want, words are just made up sounds.
