Inktober is great because you get to bond with other humans over drawing, an activity that can be very isolated and personal. It’s meant to be fun and light and encourage you to try a daily drawing habit. The downside is we have a current culture of putting your best self only out on social media. Which means a fun and light activity turns into hours of redoing and perfecting before the official posting. This was the case for me on Day 1. A simple romp with shapes and colors turned into frustrated results, paint overs, throw-aways, scratch-outs, and head-shakes. But, that’s what it takes to grow as an artist, and especially as a human. Potted Plant in Old San Juan. 🇵🇷 12x16 oil on canvas I mostly paint from photo references that I take, but there is a large discrepancy in the colors that your eye sees and the colors the camera captures. The best thing to do would be to paint from life, but that requires packing up my supplies, transporting them, taking them out, cleaning up once finished, etc.... So instead I resort to taking notes on the colors when I take the photo and then make sure I’m not just copying the photo when I paint. I want my painting to turn out better than the photo.
