Magic: What I’ve learned so far...
Here’s what I’ve learned about magic as I understand it (so far and in no particular order)*:
1. Everything you create, brew, craft, and speak into existence begins with intention. The act of the ritual/spell is to help you focus and cultivate energy to propel your intention into reality.
2. Symbolism is key to helping you visualize the desired outcome. Want to protect yourself from someone who is relentlessly attacking you psychically? Freeze them in their tracks. Write their name on a white slip of paper in red ink and seal it in a jar filled with water. Freeze the jar and leave it for at least a week.At least that’s how I would do it, however, what works as a symbol for me might have a different meaning for you - each spell should reflect what you feel and need based on your own interpretation. 3. You can’t just depend on a spell to make a difference in your life. You need to go out there and try to make a change. A spell is only as strong as the intention, yes, but know what’s stronger? Action. Want to lose weight? Work out. Want to get that promotion? Don’t show up late to work, don’t call out, and never give less than 110% Want that cute human over their to notice you? Introduce yourself. Want a familiar? Go out and foster/adopt a pet!
*Now, it’s possible that I have all this wrong, but based off of what I’ve read this seems to be a common belief across many traditions/personal practices. If there’s anything that needs correcting, please oh great and esteemed elders, help a sister out! Lol.

The Dracula Saga (1972)
Another vampire movie directed by Leon Klimovsky (Vampire’s Night Orgy), this time involving Count Dracula inviting his pregnant (non-vampire) family member and her husband to the castle.  Why you ask?  Because the Count is getting old and he is looking for new blood to carry on the family name.  You see, the only heir to the Dracula name is a horribly deformed ‘boy’ with one eye and webbed hands. Gets off to a slow start (after an odd voice-over and dream sequence involving a furry, fanged bat-like vampire chasing Berta around an empty house)..  Its rather talky and the dialogue isn’t the best but sort of picks up once Dracula makes his first appearance some 30-40 minutes in.  Atmosphere and sets are good for the most part, and the costumes are good (its a period gothic). The dubbing isn’t very good however.  The voice given to Dracula just isn’t very effective and many of the women come off as bubble headed idiots. There are some good creepy moments..  The whole 'family affair’ approach to Dracula was interesting with Count Dracula being the old, kingly head of the family living with his wife and nieces and even vampiric servants.  There are several great shots of the entire family gathered at a door watching over the pregnant Berta. The guy playing Dracula does a pretty good job.  Hes an older man with graying hair, a bit of a hook nose, alot of character in his face and almost satanic pointed eyebrows. Of course Euro-horror fans will instantly recognize Helga Line as Dracula's wife. May not be quite as good as Vampires’ Night Orgy or Count Dracula’s Great Love (written by Klimovsky collaborator, Paul Naschy), but has some solid atmosphere, a few good characters and creepy moments.  One fantastic scene has the family commenting on the wine (which is actually blood) to which Dracula replies that its only found in Transylvania and that 'the cellar is full of it’ while the nieces giggle. Will probably grow on me.

Nocturna, Granddaughter of Dracula (1979)
Nocturna, the granddaughter of Dracula meets and falls in love with a young musician who is visiting Transylvania. The two decide to run away back to New York much to the chagrin of Dracula (played by John Carradine), who travels to New York intent on bringing her back home. In all my years of being into horror this one has eluded me and I'm first seeing this on Youtube in 2017! Obviously this is one of Carradine's cheap later movies (Vampire Hookers anyone?) and it shows. Some sets look like they're going to fall over while an early shot of Carradine's coffin was well done and looked alot like the cavernous set of 1931's Dracula with Bela Lugosi. The movie is really bizarre at times with some mind boggling acting and dialogue. Brother Theodore (who I've vaguely known about for years) plays a sort of assistant to Dracula who lusts after and spies on Nocturna. After watching her nude after a bath and oiling herself up he is seen hiding behind a curtain saying 'I'm too easily aroused, cows have to wear brassieres when I go to the country'. What?? Carradine himself is not immune to the outrageous dialogue and at one point remarks 'Ladies say I was hung like a walrus'. A scene later in the movie has Nocturna's boyfriend teaching her how to smoke weed, exclaiming 'This is fantastic grass!' after she becomes high and reveals that shes a vampire and even transforms into a bat in front of him. The cast is rounded out by Yvonne De Carlo (just 2 years before she reprised her role as Lily in The Munsters' Revenge), a relative of Nocturna who lives under the Brooklyn Bridge, and Nai Bonet, a Vietnamese belly dancer who apparently thought up and produced this movie along with another before abandoning acting. Bonet is quite personable and looks great on camera with pretty eyes and a fantastic smile. She looks like shes having a good time. Scenes later in New York with her walking through the streets at night while onlookers stop and stare, and another scene in particular where she runs into a pimp who also happens to be a vampire (and friend), remind me alot of similar scenes in Blacula. There is quite a bit of disco and dancing (at the Starship Discovery club) here but unlike some movies I mostly enjoyed the music and it really didn't detract. A few highlights include Theodore in a crazy performance, the boyfriend ripping off a piece of a neon sign to use as a weapon against Dracula and at the end Drac being knocked out and put on a TWA flight back to Transylvania with Yvonne De Carlo (here named Jugulia Vein) shacking up with him in his coffin, which really made me laugh for some reason. I really enjoyed this movie. Quite bizarre at times with off the wall performances and dialogue. Bonet, being the one who concieved the movie, really looks like she cares and isn't phoning it in like perhaps Carradine who is in his twilight years here. I'd really like to see this remastered on a Bluray or even DVD but given its obscurity still in 2017, I doubt that will happen.

War-Gods of the Deep (1966)
Vincent Price plays the king/ruler of a lost underwater city, Lyonesse, who kidnaps the girlfriend of a young scientist because she bears a strong resemblance to his dead wife.. The scientist and his friend (and his pet chicken in a wicker basket) go looking for her via a hidden passage in their old mansion and fall into a whirlpool which whisks them off to the city under the sea. Once there, Price tells them they can either help save the city from an impending underwater volcanic eruption or die. Really not alot to this movie I'm afraid. There’s some comedic nonsense with David Tomlinson and his pet chicken early on, then the girlfriend disappears, the scientists end up in the underwater city where they do a little verbal sparring with Price and try to save the girl so that they can escape.. The above water sets are all beautifully done and are as good as any in Corman's Poe series. The underwater city looks fantastic filled with eye searing reds, greens and blues. Makes me wonder if the boys over at AIP started taking lighting lessons from Mario Bava considering they started distributing Bava's movies in the US in 1960. The costumes/sets here were also amazing, like the use of a giant upturned hand as a sort of waterfall, statue work and ornate diving suits. The acting is generally well done. Price and Susan Hart from Dr. Goldfoot are here and I even enjoyed David Tomlinson as well. Hes a good actor, but the pet chicken thing did get a little old as the movie wore on. There is 1 good joke though when Vincent Price tells that he hasn't had beef or chicken in a very long time and that his diet consists only of fish, and Tomlinson stutters out 'Chicken?' as Herbert sticks his head out of the basket. The chicken bit was apparently added by the producer and both the director and Price were against it. It does add a bit of whimsy I suppose, but still gets old. During the big escape, the movie almost comes to a halt during a 10+ minute stretch without dialogue where the scientists are pursued on foot underwater, in slow motion, by gill-men and Price's subjects. Gill-man suits are pretty laughable. The old age makeup on Price is fantastic at the end as he crawls up into the sun. Rewatching these days, I quite enjoyed it. Price elevates anything he does and the movie looks great. Original rating was 3 stars. I’d probably bump it up to 3.5 today.

Starting a blog
So I’ve decided to try and actively publish a blog.. I’ve always loved Halloween and everything that goes along with it and about 20+ years ago I got really into horror movies. I bought and read the Psychotronic Encyclopedia of Film and read it from cover to cover noting all the movies that sounded interesting and began searching them out. I soon found that I was seeing so many movies they began to blur together so I started a modest little site, mainly for my own use, where I wrote short reviews for every movie I saw and gave them a rating. I fell out of movies for a long time (the most recently edited HTML file I have is from 2007) but I’ve retained my massive DVD (and now Blu-ray) collection. As I’m wanting to re-watch alot of these movies I thought it would be fun to post my original review and update it with my modern take and spice it up with some artwork from each movie. I also have a small, but in my opinion, nice, collection of old movie posters. I’m sure reblogs, and other things I find interesting may turn up here too. So if you decide to check it out, thanks!

I’ve mentioned it several times before, but I love fan art best when artist just draw the characters in their own style instead of cribbing on the original style. Weirdly, you see the latter more often than the former with Velma. Anyway, this picture is cute.
