Thought I’d post some art I did for the #refugium2024 of one of my grappler variations. I don’t know much of the world so I went with what felt right.

Live stages of my oc Tina who’s species now has a name (void dweller) I wanted to root this character more with spec biology and think about how they may have came to be.

The larva is the first stage of any void dwellers life, they seemingly resemble beetle larvae but unlike any insect larva these are abnormally big and stand around 3 feet tall, have see-through skin, and have 5 feet.

Not much is known of the actual origin of this larva and what point in history they appeared, all is known is that none have been found outside of caves. So far only 7 specimens have been found throughout the 38 years of their discovery. All being in separate locations and even different countries.

The larvae are extremely resistant when it comes to lack of food and will feast upon slat clusters found in cave systems. Once the larva come across any organic material such as a body of any animal, the larva will gorge itself with anything that they have. This will activate a dormant period within the larva and won’t move or do any activities within the 5 month period, throughout this time the larva will become noticeably bloated and enlarged. After this period of inactivity a fully formed pale creature will sprout out of the larva’s body.

This gross pale fetus was not part of the larvae conciseness but is a completely new individual on its own and unlike butterfly’s with metamorphosis, the larva was used as it’s vessel.

Depending on what the larva ate, the genetic material varies on the individual. Here is a visual example of different void dwellers. The only thing in common that they may share is the loss of skin around the face and in some cases the whole body, exposing the muscle and skull. They all begin to loose their eyelids within age leaving the eyes fully exposed with deep dark sockets.

Felt like doing some creature redesigns from my previous speculative biology project

Don’t know he’s name don’t know he’s business all I know for now is that this creature is a plant based organisms who’s family branch became the dominant organisms in their ecosystems. Many alike these highly evolved plant like animals have multiple other creatures alike with similar biology and diets. Their legs are operated by hydraulics similar to insects. Their muscle’s powered by liquid being forced into them to expand and retract. They come in many colours, but hues of greens, orange yellows, and blues, are the most common among this lumbering cows.

They have many ways of getting their energy source; either sucking up nutrients from the rich soil, photosynthesising a trait that has still stuck to this day from their ancestors, breathing in carbon to exchange into auger or to consume foods. These are the reason to why these animals have risen to success on their planet.

I have no idea what their planet is made out of but the dude is pretty chill and that’s all that matter.

If Wompers from my project (Land Of Borease) where selectively bred like todays dog breeds.

A drawing of one of Boreas’s many treasures the Gut Cow, this creature being highly regarded by nearly all Zaabua clans and being protected 24/7 by their own personal bodyguards who are Wompers who are specifically bred for protecting this creature. Zaabua’s aren’t the only animals who take advantage of the Gut Cows rich milk and other animals have been observed sucking on its teets, its non confrontational and calm demeanour let’s just about any creature near it as long as its guest doesn’t have big enough teeth to kill it.

Killing this animal among the Zaabua is thought to bring a bad omen towards the clan and become cursed as the Gut Cow is seen more as a great mother figure towards the Zaabua rather than just any animal. Those who have killed this animal have either been banished and usually do not make it on their own as other clans that would have heard the news will refuse to take them in or any other member from that clan, essentially causing the downfall of that whole clan if it needed help from any neighbouring clans in the future. The only clan that does not hold this creature to such a high standard are western tribe members who have much less resources and will eat what ever they will find without feeling the pressure of being disliked by other clans.

So I got this idea I want to work towards and that’s plant like organisms that live on a organic flesh planet made out of human like material such as eyes muscles and bone.

Real men shit crayons and draw speculative biology

They generally tend to avoid mimicking animals with complex socialisation capabilities such as the zaabua, as they are mostly unsuccessful with copying their complex languages, making them easy to pick out. And instead tend to seek out animals on the lower IQ side who aren’t so dependent on communication.

In the rare chance of a Skin Keeper taking control of a Zaabuas corpse, the Zaabua will quickly identify if a Skin keeper has infiltrated their group and will quickly kill off the unwanted guest. After that they re bury the defiled body in a more secrete location to avoid another one of these unusual events.

The few rare instances of these happening to the Zaabua tribe, have been reported to become paranoid and become wary of each other and might conspire on one another, pointing suspicion on random members or even use this opportunity to get rid of someone who they might have had a confrontation with.

despite not exhibiting any of the traits of a Skin Keeper such as looking like a literal walking corpse. Often the blame being successfully pointed towards are the elderly who look more warn down and rugged.

FLOWER PLANET PROJECT

I thought I’d post this older project of mine that I did throughout my college course that started it all. For my FMP (final major project) I decided my theme will be speculative biology but at the time I titled it speculative evolution as I did not know the name of the genera. I would say this was the project that pushed me towards the direction that I am in now and that is to fully explore spec bio in my art.

I wanted to create animals that resembled plants due to their planet being rich with oxygen and inhabited by giant alien flowers, thus pushing the animals into adapting colourful camouflage to blend in with their also vibrant environment, resembling many of the planets fauna. At the time I was taking inspiration from earths animals such as camels, tarantulas, amphibians, and gazelles. I used this as a starting point as I didn’t want to go all out in creating a hard core alien life form with science farty stuff behind every design decision.

Here’s a pig thingy ma jig that I’ve created as a visual starting point to what I wanted my spec bio creatures to resemble or take example from, on this flowering planet. ⬇️

A tribe leaders Zaabua attire. Zaabua don’t see the need for clothing like us humans do, being covered in fur is more than enough to keep them warm and cozy.

The only time they decide to willingly wear something is either for aid such as going through snow storms or to show status as shown here. Tribe leaders more than often wear attire that represents their tribe, each having individual looks depending on what kind of animal pelt they use. But then again even some tribe leaders do not need to feel the need to stand out from the rest.
