Not a lyric, but oof.
The final paragraph of Emily Wilson’s note on her translation of the Odyssey:
“There is a stranger outside your house. He is old, ragged, and dirty. He is tired. He has been wandering, homeless, for a long time, perhaps many years. Invite him inside. You do not know his name. He may be a thief. He may be a murderer. He may be a god. He may remind you of your husband, your father, or yourself. Do not ask questions. Wait. Let him sit on a comfortable chair and warm himself beside your fire. Bring him some food, the best you have, and a cup of wine. Let him eat and drink until he is satisfied. Be patient. When he is finished, he will tell his story. Listen carefully. It may not be as you expect.”

Maybe this makes me basic, but I don’t know a better piece of lyricism than the first two stanzas of Hallulejah (the two stanzas kept at the beginning of every version). The struggling faith! The feminine power! The recognized audacity in referring directly to God, in asking a derisive question to his FACE! The notion of “Hallelujah!”being used as an appeal to God, but also as a question and a cry. And besides that, there’s this theme of faith in and worship of tangible things, things like music and human connection, and this idea that these things are holy in themselves, not just as conductors of worship towards something bigger.
And I really should not have listened to this song when I’m this tired, so I’m promptly getting off my pedestal and going to sleep.
