this is me NOW. i used to be able to walk 15 minutes down to the local park, walk a lap on their trail, and walk back. these days i probably couldn't walk a long city block without my lungs hating me (also where i live NOW has way more stray dogs than my old neighborhood.)
walkable cities also means sittable cities send tweet

The “for sure no kill” shelter in my metroplex absolutely never has openings (I had two young kittens a few years back that were REALLY sibling bonded and that I really didn’t want to keep at the time) and our feral coalition is ALL volunteer so they noped out on me too. (I was hoping for a barn-type placement and they went “unadoptable due to contact skittishness” so I ended up keeping them and they eventually got cuddly.)
I have no idea on Animal Care Services beyond “your outdoor cat is obviously fixed because she’s ear-tipped and clearly looks cared for, we won’t mess with her” when they came to collect a VERY injured cat who dragged itself into my yard. (It was messed up enough that while I *hoped* they could fix it, euthanasia either for cost reasons or “too far gone” was fine by me). My local humane society doesn’t say they’re no-kill either.
My bff lives out in the country and so many dogs and cats get dumped by there that one of her neighbors literally has a sign up about his owning an AK-47. (I live in Texas and we have coyotes and feral hogs that far out, I totally believe the sign.)

I think this is super important to remember.

Fandom is such a weird place. Like I watched a tv show and thought “wow, these two nerds have a lot of chemistry and I’d like to dedicate a large chunk of my life to thinking about them” so I went in search of other people who also thought these two nerds had a lot of chemistry and then it turned out that a shit ton of people were talking about these two nerds having a lot of chemistry and now it’s 4 years later and we write each other porn on holidays.

My SSDI check is about average for SSDI, and it's debatable whether it’d even pay rent on a 1-bedroom in a nice part of town (after they take the Medicare Part B out I get ~$1260). AND I live in a metroplex where the living wage is about $16, so it’s not even like my city’s cost of living is Bay Area or Manhattan-type jacked.
With all due disrespect anyone who thinks a full grown adult can survive off of 12$/hr in 2023 should die

I have never wanted a frenchie either (if I’m gonna get a bulldog I want a couch potato-ey pit-type), but I am so happy that at least one breeder is working to get HERS so they have faces and can actually BREATHE halfway normally. (Breed standard is basically so squished-in that the chance of any given frenchie having respiratory issues are seriously jacked-up).
I finally encountered the mythical ethical french bulldog breeder. She is actively breeding *for* dogs with faces, and the ability to breathe, and tails that are not inverted. Dogs that are active and can breathe quietly with their mouths closed! And so good tempered!
I have never before wanted a frenchie. This little boyo stole my heart though. It's good for my wallet that I can only have one dog at a time and Alyssum is still going strong at the moment.

He was such a sweetie. I gave him scritchies on the front of his chest and he lost all structural integrity and melted onto my hand into a pile of puppy bliss.

https://www.tiktok.com/@grandrivercards/video/7244398102210219269Have some additional links, folks.
https://lptv.org/former-beaver-zach-whitecloud-returns-to-bemidji-a-stanley-cup-champion/
(He played for Bemidji State for two years putting up notable stats during both and a lot of the area has become Vegas fans because of him. I want the beadwork Knights necklace somebody’s holding up in this, but I am also about 98% sure I couldn’t afford to appropriately compensate the artist for the time and materials needed to make it.)
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/sioux-valley-dakota-nation-zach-whitecloud-stanley-cup-win-1.6876705
(Zach’s official nickname from his First Nation is “Dakota Knight”, among other interesting bits. The story is real, but the link doesn’t want to paste right tonight.)
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/zach-whitecloud-sioux-valley-stanley-cup-1.6945796
They had a full-blown powwow to welcome Whitecloud and the Cup home, and the star blanket they gifted him with is definitely Vegas colors and definitely gorgeous and meaningful.
Quote: (Hundreds gathered to see the Stanley Cup winner and Sioux Valley Dakota Nation hero waving cutouts of Whitecloud's jersey number as he entered the arena in a horse-drawn carriage.
Sioux Valley's drum group Dakota Hotain played an honour song for Whitecloud, and chief and council gifted him a star blanket with the Las Vegas Golden Knights colours.)

Even folks from Grand River are being all “it would have been cooler if Montour had brought the Cup to Six Nations of the Grand River but Zach Whitecloud lifting it still makes it a good day to be indigenous". (same deal, my link-fu is failing me tonight.)

Also, what the fuck was the p-value? (I forget exactly what it has to be to make a study’s results legit, but if we’re talking academic-level stuff that matters too).
There is a reason why the saying is “lies, damn lies, and statistics”. (For instance, if your doctor is yelling at you about your BMI, tell them to STFU. Athletes with a lot of muscle mass can have BMIs above the theoretical preferred numbers while still being perfectly healthy, the actual mathematician who developed it a) used a bunch of Belgian dudes who iirc were mostly at least somewhat underfed and b) said himself it shouldn’t be used the way a lot of people use it, they recently dropped the numbers so a whole bunch of people who were borderline became “fat”, and it’s racist especially against black ladies and femmes.)

man yall the interpersonal drama in ancient rome was something else like. there was a guy named crassus who had a pet eel and was so sad when it died that he gave it a funeral, and when another dude named domitius ahenobarbus made fun of him for throwing an eel funeral, crassus was like "oh so this is coming from the guy who's buried three of his wives and not even shed a single tear about it." wish i could've been in the room for that one

Because I'm only seeing other Jews posting about this, non-Jews I need you to be aware that for the past month or two there has been a wave of bomb threats and swattings at synagogues all across the US. They usually do it when services are being livestreamed. I haven't seen a single non-Jew talking about this. High holidays are coming up in a few weeks, which is when most attacks happen against our communities. We're worried, and we need people to know what's happening to us.

so yeah that fire in Lahaina, Maui? That was what indigenous activists were trying to prevent. That is why Land Back movements wants indigenous people to be the stewards of the land that was once theirs. Not kick out white people and settlers. But to prevent shit like that where a bunch of tourists/settlers won't destroy the planet in their ruthless pursuit of productivity and profit. So yeah, think on that.

for real! (from kadji amin)
[Image description: Screenshot of text:
What I’ve realized is that I believe that the matter of gender is practical and relational. It’s not about who you are inside, it’s more about how you would feel most comfortable in the world. It’s not ‘Who are you?’ but ‘How do you want to live?’
Had that been the discourse when I was coming up, I would have breathed a sigh of relief. I don’t have to figure out who I am on the inside, I just have to figure out how I want to live.

Where you can donate to help Maui, Hawaii
this article has places listed that you can donate to, but i’ll also put direct links to some of these places in this post:
Maui United Way
Maui Strong Fund
Maui Food Bank
Maui Humane Society
my family is based in Oahu, but i consider all the islands my home even though i physically haven’t stepped foot on them before. seeing all the homes and history and memories being lost in this hurts.
if you are unable to donate, don’t feel guilty—doing things like spreading the word and making people aware of the situation helps as well. thank you for whatever you can do! mahalo
UPDATE: removed Maui Mutual Aid Fund for now because upon further research using the charity checking sites provided by this gov site, it doesn’t appear in results unlike the others listed. so i advise caution for now if you decide to donate there! they may still be legitimate, but i want to exercise caution.

Never fucking buying gas from Chevron any more (and now I have to go research if they sell under other brands).
Horrible fact of the day: Chevron just released a new boat fuel that WILL give you cancer.
Not "might", not "could", WILL. It has a cancer ratio of 1:1, as in, in a group of 10 people, ALL 10 would contract CANCER.
The EPA's safety limit is 1:1,000,000 as in 1 in a million people get cancer.
The EPA approved it anyways. I am not joking. The EPA approved a boat fuel that has a near 100% chance of giving someone cancer. It has such a good chance of giving someone cancer that if you DIDN'T get cancer YOU WOULD BE AN OUTLIER.
Fuck the oil industries.
