Project Statement
When I got my Movement brief, I explored the various forms of movement in a mind map. However, the word that kept replaying in my head was - water. Having a river at one side of where I live, a lake to the other side, and spending my summers at the beach, the movement and flow of water has always peaked my interest.
I brainstormed “WATER” and cake up with a mindmap of bodies of water, adjectives and verbs. While looking at these words I tried to ask myself questions that I could future explore using my three electives - Painting, Printing, and PFV. I came up with “What is the urge for us to be near water?”, “What are the similarities between the bodies of water on earth, and the water within our bodies?”, and “Is water simply a flow?”
Painting:
• Explored bodies of water by creating images of beaches, lakes, rivers, and ripples.
• Explored water within our bodies by paintings bodily objects (veins, eye) to resemble forms of water (river, canal).
• Explored movement of water by experimenting with pour painting.
• Explored urge to be near water by painting scenes that show how we gravitate towards it - boat, lakes.
Print:
• Explored bodies of water by manipulating photographs that I had previous took.
• Looked at movements of water by creating Lino prints of oceans, ripples.
• Associated our urge to be near water by creating stamps of astrology signs that represent water.
• Experimented with woodcut prints to create an image of water bubbles.
• Explored flow of water by creating prints using homemade gelli plates.
PFV:
• Explored the mysterious nature of water and the world beneath it through cyanotype.
• Experimented with drop photography to show the free movement of water.
• Researched our urge to be near water by photographing various scenes ie man fishing, dog in water, fishing hut.
In conclusion, I would have liked to have had more time to explore and research further. However, Bodies of Water is such a massive subject with so many directions that I could be exploring it forever.
I am happy that I was able to adapt to working and researching from home, and I am happy I was able to complete so many diverse pieces. If I had more time and if I were in college, I would have loved to create an installation of projecting various water movements on to people of all walks of life. It would represent that although we may appear to be different, the one thing we all have in common is water, and the many forms it takes.

Unfortunately the lens from my Canon camera broke when my dog thought she was going for a walk and pushed me...
So I used this time to explore our urge to be near water using my phone, while I waited for my replacement lens.

Following on from Des’s workshop on exploring drawing and shading, I used an image that I previous took and manipulated. I created a more in depth piece by drawing on 5 sheets of acetate - each one a different piece of the original image and a different colour.

Cyanotype
I was delighted to hear that LSAD Materials Store would be providing prepared cyanotype sheets to be completed at home, as I felt it would be one of the best materials to explore Bodies of Water with.
The first two sheets I completed, I placed a mixture of leaves and netting, to represent the bottom of oceans, rivers and lakes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was extremely happy with the image of netting as it resembles the ripples of any form of liquid.
For the next two sheets I created little clay balls and placed them on the cyanotype sheets. Unfortunately I forgot to photograph them developing, however these are the end product.
Tumblr media
For the final sheet, I decided to cut a sheet of paper into the shape of droplets. Unfortunately I also forgot to photograph this developing in the sunlight.
Tumblr media
I am happy with the result of using the cyanotype at home, and am grateful for being able to do so.
The first two images would be my preference out of the five as I feel they demonstrate the mysterious and interesting nature of Bodies of Water.

Painting
Using acrylic paints, I created an abstract painting of water ripples on to a sheet of paper that I created using old scraps.
Tumblr media
I like the texture of the material for this piece as it is quite a 2D painting, so the texture adds depth to it.

Print & Painting
After watching the Gelli Plate workshop, I made three plates - one rectangle and two small squares.
I blended my ‘Oceans’ acrylic colour palette on to a plate and places on acetate. I print it twice on either end of a sheet of black card. Once dried, I cleaned the plate and added white acrylic paint to it and printed inbetween the two blue prints.
Tumblr media
I wasn’t overly impressed and was going to add to it. But once I went away and came back a few days later, I was drawn in to the colours. It feels like two oceans colliding.

Although I aimed to project an image of water on to the body of a person, which did not work out, I downloaded an app that allowed me to create layers and blend.
I had to use previous photos of myself as no one would allow me to use theirs!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am extremely happy the final photo as it is, in essence, what I imagined my piece would look like.

DIY Projector
Steps and set up:
• place magnifying glass on side of shoebox and draw outline. Then cut out the circle.
• stick the glass on over the hole with glue gun
• cut a foam board to fit snuggly within box
• put image on phone and stick to board with double sided tape
• close box
• turn off lights
• the foam board can be moved back and forth to focus the projector
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This has not worked out for me at all, and then image is not clear when projected.
I am disappointed as I wanted to project a video of a moving river on to a person, to represent the similarities between the bodies of water on earth, and water in our bodies.

Wood Cut
Using an image that I previously took and edited, after one of Des’s first workshops, I created a Lino cut and layered it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My cutting tools at home would not be the best quality so I could not as clean of a cut or precision that I wanted. Although, I did prefer this to the Lino as it is most pronounced and durable.

Lino Cut
I created multiple pieces from Lino as I wanted to try capture the various movements and forms that water can take.

The colour blue - research and response.
Tumblr media
A blue mined is a creative mind. Hopping in the shower can be a great way to trigger ideas when our brains are in a rut. In our busy lives we don’t get much of a chance to rest and wander freely. But when we do, the brain switches into the default mode network. This is associated with daydreaming, imagination, consolidation of memories, insight and introspection. The default mode network is extremely important for creativity. The shower is a proxy for the Pacific Ocean or the Atlantic Ocean. You step in the shower, and you remove a lot of the visual stimulation of your day. Auditorily, it’s the same thing. It’s a steady stream of blue noise. You’re not hearing voices or processing ideas. You step into the shower and it’s a break.

Stamp Making
Following on from this workshop, I created multiple stamps by cutting out shapes related to my ‘Water’ Movement Project out of foam, and stuck on to various box shaped objects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I enjoyed this workshop as it was of great benefit to crate small stamps that can be layered and reused on future pieces.
