I chose to use brown ink for this image because skyrim is a very dull brown-toned game, theres not a lot of vibrant colour so I wanted to recreate that kind of dull, scary atmosphere. I experimented with the amount of ink on the plate. I took away must of it on the horse to make him stand out from the background.
Tumblr media
I then tried removing most of the ink and then adding more onto certain areas like the horses harness and the trees on the mountain
Tumblr media
I wanted to try out the coloured paper again, I wasnt sure how to do it so i just put random colours wherever to see what kind of look theyd give, it also helped me pick which colour gave the best vibe.
Tumblr media
Here I used a bit of blue ink and mixed some brown too which made sort of a muddy navy colour which i really liked. I accidentally made the horses eyes look very demonic but he's a nice guy I swear. I also added red triangular paper to represent bloody swords!

I then moved onto another video game, Skyrim. This game was my childhood and all i did was ride my horse and put baskets on peoples heads..
Tumblr media
I sketched this image to scale and instead of just drawing it again i realised there was a way easier way to just copy and paste it.
Tumblr media
I traced it onto tracing paper, and then placed it facing pencil side down onto the copper plate, then coloured really hard on the back of it which pressed the drawing onto the plate.
Tumblr media
And thats it etched!

Heres how some of the prints came out!
Tumblr media
I removed some ink from the seamoth so that it would be highlighted and stood out from the background, i also wanted the bg to be darker to add some depth
Tumblr media
I experimented with coloured paper that suzannah gave me. I put the paper onto the print and added wallpaper glue so it would stick properly, then put it through the rolling press. I used yellow to make it look like theres light coming from the inside
Tumblr media
I coloured in the most important things in the image and labeled what they are so no ones thinking "wtf am i looking at".

on monday we got introduced to electro etching. I moved onto another game called subnautica which im hyperfixated on at the moment, so i drew the Seamoth which is the first underwater vehicle you make.
Tumblr media
You can also customize the seamoth further on in the game. I made mine lime green on the outside and torquoise on the inside.
Tumblr media
I traced the plate and made a sketch of it to get the size right. (sorry its so hard to see).
Tumblr media
When i was ready to etch, i had to polish my plate and then wax it. I etched my image onto it with a sharp metal tool. The last step was to bite it, not with my mouth but with electricity. we had a basin full of copper water and this plate wrapped in copper wire and we hook the plate up to that in the water and turn on the electricity to bite the copper etching.

Heres a few of my favourite screen prints of V1
Tumblr media
I did red and blue prints because in the game you play as V1 who's a blue machine, and then on a later level you fight another machine called V2 who's red and looks like you.
Tumblr media
V1 and V2 enemies to lovers <3
Tumblr media
I also printed on black paper but the blue looks almost white :/
Tumblr media
Suzannah brought me some cloth to print on which was really cool, I also spread some ink around it to make it super bloody !

I started my screen printing process. I learned a different process which is burning a printed image onto a screen, which was super fascinating to see. Fiona showed how to edit my image on photoshop to give it this grainy newspaper style, so that itll burn onto the screen clearly
Tumblr media
I prepared my screen by oiling my picture, placing it onto the screen, putting an emulsion on it, letting that dry in the big screen oven, then using UV light to burn the ink onto the screen while the areas not exposed to light will wash away.
When washed with water the image comes through! I let it dry and then its ready for printing
Tumblr media
Heres my set up!
Tumblr media
These are some of the prints, I made a lot more than that

I started with the game Ultrakill. I drew the character you play as, called V1. He's a machine that uses enemies blood as fuel!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then I traced it with a pen, which fiona suggested i risoprint.
Tumblr media
When lining up the papers, you usually keep them inline with eachother but i decided to make them uneven so that it would create two images overlapping eachother.
This created an awesome glitching effect which gave the perfect video game vibe

For my riso print i wanted to create images of humans combined with objects. I made this collage from magazine cutouts. It came out pretty cool but I wish I had the colours the other way around because you can still see the faces through the orange colour.

Video games are my main source of entertainment so I decided to explore my identity through my favourite video games. Playing games let me escape from the real world and forget about all my problems. This also gave me a good excuse to talk about my special interest :D
I wrote down my favourite games along with the characters you play/chose to play as. As you can see the common theme is survival and a lil bit of murder..

Artist Research
Tang Yau Hoong is an illustrator and graphic designer who lives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His artwork caught my attention when I seen this particular piece. It's very popular so you might've seen it before. His work appears very simple at first but it makes you stop and really think about the concept he creates.
His illustrations are digital but he adds a personal touch by scanning images of brushes, watercolours and inks, to "create a vintage, silkscreen-ish and painterly look"
Tumblr media
Not all of his art is about light, but there are a lot that I find relate to my project.
I love the idea of looking at intangible things as something you can hold, such as light. I've always wondered what light would feel like to hold. Would it be heavy or...light?
Tumblr media
The 3D look of the buildings combined with the 2D affect of the people painting a sky is fascinating to me. It's interesting to look at but I wonder what message Tang Yau is trying to convey. Perhaps that working class people make the world go round? that they are the reason we get to continue on our life, but no one sees or appreciates the work they do.

Screen printing Movement
Here are pictures of the printing station. I put my stencil under the screen and tape it onto it. I lift it with one hand and with the other I use the Squeegee to flood the screen, then I put the screen down onto whatever I'm printing onto, and I use both hands to pull it down the screen and print! You have to use a lot of pressure when printing or else the print will be patchy.
Tumblr media
I printed onto my inky t shirt and it looks so cool! I love the blue and yellow combo. I had to put a sheet of card inside the t shirt so the ink wouldn't go through and onto the other side.
Tumblr media
I decided to print multiple times on a page to get some more interesting designs, and I love them!

screen printing Movement
On Monday I did the screen printing workshop. For some reason I've been very fascinated by the lights coming through my blinds, so I decided to play around with it. I noticed that the light will bend and change shape on certain objects. So i got some paper and put it in different positions on my bed and got really cool results! In the third one I'm holding my hand in front of the window which created those jagged shapes. Lastly, I crinkled up the paper to see how the light would interact with the creases and dents.
Tumblr media
I wasn't sure how I would use those results in any of my disciplines until I did screen printing. Even though they're very simple lines, I knew they would be the perfect stencils. Here are the cut out stencils I made.
Tumblr media
Fiona taught us how to set up the printing stations. We use boards that have hinges and we tighten the screen onto them so you can lift up the screen easily while its still in place. During the demonstration, Fiona printed my print which is clearly the first one below. After I was done using the screen, I washed it with a power washer in a room downstairs. [it was not fun, my pants got wet >:( ]
Tumblr media
It was a very fun day and I learned so much about printing, and that there's so many things you can use!! I love how much preparation you do to make prints and you end up getting so many that its worth all the work you put in.

~Movement~
On Tuesday we did gesture drawings in the Church Gallery. Sylvia posed for us again. Then after the break other people did poses. These are my favourite drawings I did. I did about 15-20 pages so I choose my best ones. Sylvia told us to focus on where the weight is being distributed (leg holding up body, leaning on arm etc.) I found this hard to do at first but I think I started showing it much better. The proportions of the arms were difficult for me, some of them are really short, and it kinda messes up the whole body.
Tumblr media
Sylvia did an exercise with us where we hold up a pen with our arm completely straight to someone directly in front of us. The top of the pen has to be at their crown. We then slide down our finger to meet their chin, and count all the way down to their feet and the head should fit 6-7 times in an adult body. And that should help get your proportions more accurate. ⍟_⍟

✧Painting✧
~Movement~
On Monday I did the painting workshop with Sylvia. We didn't have the nude model but thankfully Sylvia did poses for us. The first thing we had to do was mix the primary colours together to make a dark brown colour. Then mix 1/4 of that with white to get a medium tone, then mix 1/4 of that tone with white to get a light tone. So, as you can see, I have three tones of brown on my palette. I used a Donkey to paint, which is a bench with a board that lifts up so you can sit and paint.
Tumblr media
This is definitely proof that you HAVE to trust the process and not to let your blobs demotivate you. I loved painting a person and understanding the lights and shadows that affect the portrait. I learned that the background is just as important as the portrait itself. It's important to show where light is entering the room, where its hitting the ground, and how it interacts with skin, clothing and, in this case, the metal bars on the chair.
Tumblr media
Sylvia told us to just paint once and not layer it too much, which was difficult. So not everything is blended but I like how it made the painting look. I'm most proud of the light and shadows in the painting, I think I made it very realistic. My favourite parts are the skirt, legs and the chair. What I don't like as much are the arms and face. As you can see the face is very skinwalker like.. ✨_✨

ceramics
Movement
I finally got to hang my ceramic pieces!!
I used one of my acetate bottles from printmaking to get that pink colour. I just taped it to my phone over the flashlight. I thought it would be a bit stronger but and not as blurry but it's still interesting.
Tumblr media
The moon is definitely my favourite, the holes at the side really add to it.
Tumblr media
I thought this piece would be the most interesting but its not really, the holes are a bit boring.
Tumblr media
I really love how this guy turned out. The shadow looks like a scary dragon with loads of sharp scales.

These are my finished pieces from the ceramics workshop.
One of my ideas at the start was to make something small and use a light to create a shadow from it that looks really scary, so I plan on doing that with the first one.
The second one is the moon. I know the moon doesn't give us light its just the sun lighting up the moon but, moonlight is still its own thing.
Tumblr media
This is just a random shape, I was mainly using it to experiment with mark-making and designing the clay.

✧Ceramics✧
~Movement~
My original plan when I decided to do light was to make a hanging piece, like a chandelier, for light to interact with. So I just went with that when using clay. These pieces are just experimental, I want to see how the light will interact with them. I'm going to hang them from something and photograph them in a dark room and use light sources in different angles and distances and hopefully get a cool result.
Tumblr media
Of course I had to make them super detailed. I also made this very chunky CD and used tin foil to make it shiny!!
Tumblr media
I really love how they look! They dried a bit during lunch so I was able to carve more details into them.
