As much of a bastard as HG is being in this chapter, I appreciate that its showing another side of c!Scar that doesn't get talked about as much, being that he's actually just as competent and dangerous most of the other players, if not a little more, considering he comes off as very unthreatening at first glance despite actually being very willing to use his charisma and persuasion skills for selfish/manipulative purposes. (Ik kitsuneisi and doody want the comic to be more separate from the to the original life series characters and if this analysis/comparison goes against that too much, I apologise in advance, please inform me if that is the case and I will take this reblog down)

hello hello ddvau fans if you do not know me i do edits for ddvau and i have Known about this chapter for weeks and have been sitting on my rage at HG the whole time. and now it is released i need the people to see he is a bitch ass mf

anyway. starting off here. the very first thing HG says to Grian when talking about what happened is a threat

"i'm here to help you. i'm the best option you got, no one else will"

when i was editing for Doody, this line was just "i'm here to help." but Doody wanted it to come across somewhere in this chapter that HG has all the power in this situation and that HG wants Grian to know that. it was decided that the best spot to include that was right here, right off the bat. HG is Grian's only option and that is as much a promise as it is a threat. no one else will help Grian, and that includes saving him from HG if he doesn't tell HG what he wants to know

and then there's this page. when Grian isnt super forthcoming w info, HG pulls out Jimmy. HG knows better than anyone that Jimmy is completely innocent and that he had nothing to do w the attack--he's a victim here, and HG knows that better than anyone. he also knows, from being Grian and Jimmy's friend as a civilian for years, that Grian cares a lot about Jimmy, and is using that against Grian

he also knows from being a civilian and Jimmy's friend that Jimmy's pro-mutant stance isnt popular, and Jimmy could be framed if HG said something bad about him. HG is trying blatantly to use anti-mutant sentiments against Grian and Jimmy so that Grian will talk, in a moment Grian is already convinced he's going to be arrested for hiding his status as a mutant

(which: note that HG says he heard "rumors" about Jimmy's stance about mutants and his protests against the university's policies--it isn't rumors, HG knows this from being Jimmy's friend and coworker as Scar)

and then here, HG is the only one who was conscious and who was fully present for and remembers what happened during the MS attack. yeah, Tango was also there, but Tango is a known mutant, adn we've already seen people do not trust Tango and think Tango is dangerous--he's certainly not as trustworthy as HG, Superhero, Emerald Soldier, face of the military. he's the one people will trust most. what he says happened is what happened

HG says that yes, Grian’s secret is safe, but only because HG is choosing to keep it. Grian is safe because HG is allowing him to be. HG told everyone that Grian gained wings from the attack, and so HG won't arrest Grian. in this narrative which HG made up, Grian did not lie to the government and he was not always a mutant. HG said it, so it's true, even if he's lying. all HG has to do is change his mind and say that Grian was always a mutant who lied and hid his status from the government, and then Grian will be arrested. HG could change his mind at any time if Grian doesn't cooperate with him. he's very blatantly blackmailing Grian

fun fact! the original version of this line didn't have the "for now," but it was added in editing when Doody said they wanted it to be explicitly clear HG is threatening Grian

what HG says here is the truth. he isn't just representing the law--HG is above the law, and he isn't shy about making sure Grian knows that. he's willing to use anything in his disposal to get the information he wants, and he's willing to use anything available to him to make sure Grian complies with him. disguising it in friendly attitude and cookies and a phone number does not hide the fact HG was incredibly ruthlessly manipulative here

anyway. incredibly fun chapter. one of my favorites. i need DDVAU HG exploded

Me when body and facial feature diversity (you're getting a list of headcannons because thats what I FEEL like today; OP you are not obliged to read this, this is an excuse to DSMP post) I'm most passionate about this one but it makes me tweak out a little bit whenever I see ppl draw Techno completely clean shaven and/or skinny (/naa /nm). I draw him with a shortish uh idk what its called but like when the beard and mustache are kinda fused. Also he's greying a little because he's OLD. And he's built like a brick wall when bro wears his cloak around himself he looks like a head on a solid red pillar.

In a similar vein, I will die on buffbo and chubbybo hill. Also his scar definitely fucked up that half of his face like crazy I struggle to draw it but I try to make it look obviously like scar tissue when I do. And the eye on his scar side is like really fucked up cause all the outside flesh features like the eyelid and such are like obliterated. Ranboo is an uncanny valley kind of long and thin its like they got stretched or smth. They're a lot let obviously fucked up than Tubbo but they're passively creepy as hell, its just harder to really feel because we're not actually around him. Also this doesn't rlly make him more interesting or anything but I like to give them scars running down their face bc of tears.

Speaking of scars, Quackity is overall less fucked up than the rest of them but he has a vicious scar from the pickaxe death. Part of his cheek on the scarred side is missing so you can like see his teeth and the pickaxe fully took out his eye so he actually just doesn't have an eye on that side anymore (he slots a poker chip in there to look like a weird eye of sorts)

Wilbur is part zombie because of being in limbo for so long, I feel like when characters are revived they are revived directly into the bodies they died in, and Wilbur's body had already been rotting for a while when he got revived. The system's (I hc the fabric of their world to be code adjacent bc of the minecraft stuff) default response to the contradiction of reviving someone into an already partially decomposed body was to replace the decomposed parts with zombie anatomy.

That everything I can think of at the moment but yeah.

As an amateur character designer every time i see a dsmp guy that isn't drawn as a Pretty Skinny White Twink™ i lose my shit. Eat it up every time. Make them UGLY and a LITTLE FUCKED UP!!! More diversity in shape language please im frothing at the mouth. It's like drugs to me. I love you anyone who makes them weird and shapey.

Design thoughts beneath cut (prepare for yap)

Grian - I had a very clear idea of what I wanted going into this one - Sun. So we got big spikes like Sun rays and brilliant gold. We got the tricolor heart gems ofc bc 3rd Life is the og and Grian is the creator. Its also fucking massive bc its meant to be heavy as hell. It weighs down him like the guilt/grief he feels for killing Scar! :3

Scott - The image is fudgy bc of layering issues but the rods like those blaze rods that float around his head (I don't draw those words his design normally). I couldn't not include them, they're too iconic. Silver instead of gold bc it just goes better w his palette, and the crown is meant to vaguely resemble a many pointed star.

Pearl - I LOVE this one. When I started I actually had no idea wtf I was gonna do but halfway through I had the idea of placing a mourning veil of sorts over it, bc Pearl's rage was born out her grief over Tilly's death. It also works like a 'blinded by rage' sort of situation, cause it would cover her eyes if she was wearing it. The uneven edges of the veil are meant to sort of look like blood dripping but it's not realllyyy showing.

The gems are meant to be shaped like phases of moon. The big ruby represents 5am Pearl, and it looks like a full, blood moon. The two adjacent crescent gems are more blue tinted bc they're meant to represent Scott. The two gems are the sides are both semi-circle even though you can't really see it at this angle. They're supposed to be opposite half-moon, and they're red and blue respectively to represent Pearl and Scott, two sides of the same coin, two halves of the same whole.

Martyn - I don't like this one as much..but it turned out visually cool so. The bottom part is meant to be a reference to how a lot of people draw the LimLife players w bomb collars and such for timers (its a bomb headband not a collar tho sshhh). The timer display is gold for fanciness and obviously its on 0:00. The coral is, well, for Mean Gills. But also the two biggest front stalks are meant to look like swords crossing, and one of them is supposed to look broken at the top.

Scar - I went for a very retro Disney villain, Maleficent typa vibe w the base crown (its obsidian btw) bc that is what Scar would want. Also I think it plays very well into his whole loneliness thing. The flowers are partly there bc I needed smth to add interest and partly there bc...actually no that's all really 😅

Cleo - The most visually boring one imo but also the concept for this one got me so excited I actually though of this concept before even starting sketches for the others...Its supposed to look like one of those shitty plastic princess crowns both as a reference to the real world and as a reference to how Cleo is the only non-canon 'fake' winner. Also bonus the gem looks like a Watcher eye bc I think Real Life is the most connected to the Watchers.

Love this but I feel like it could be better phrased as Scar's deaths serving as a catalyst for his teammate's deaths. Grian offed himself in 3rd Life bc with Scar dead there was no one else kill. Idk enough bc LL to speak on that but SL can be rationalized as he had no teammates, there was no immediate need for him to die and cause their subsequent deaths. Cleo dying avenging Scar in LimLife definitely works with the catalyst theory.

And the catalyst theory works EXTREMELY well with WL bc the entire reason Lizzie and Jimmy went to the bunker is bc Scar died, and Grian no longer had reservations abt bombing the bunker bc Scar wasnt at risk any more.

(Also Im not considering DL for solely thematic purposes)

Spoiler Warning for WL!

If Grian has a Widow’s Curse, may I propose the idea of Scar having a “Soulmate’s Curse?” Hear me out, in every life series where Scar has had allies, he always dies before his team/teammate. I’m not counting LL because Scar and Joel were a pretty temporary alliance with all of the “reds can’t have allies” and stuff or SL because he just wasn’t with the Mounders for that long. (I still apply this to LimL because even though Bdubs died before Scar, the Clockers weren’t entirely eliminated by that point, and he still had Cleo who, might I add, died avenging him. Not to mention that their deaths were back to back.) In 3rd Life he died before Grian who soon followed him by jumping off of a cliff (and they were literally soulmates in DL). And then comes WL where right after Scar dies the Bamboozlers do too. (This curse could probably be attributed to some other lifer as well but shhh we need Desert Duo angst /j)

Grian when he knows he has to kill Scar but also Secret Life is the first season he hasnt wronged Scar badly in some way shape or form and he just cant bring himself to
