aot twt is in the trenches like I don't know how to exist in that space anymore without my mutuals and a few other accounts. I mean it had always been a mess but I think it's getting worse? I kinda feel terrible for some of the newcomers in the fandom because this is what they're left to deal with

I still can't believe that at this day and age, there are aot stans who still believe that "hanji gave up on the world" hence they chose to sacrifice their life in odiha when hanji clearly said in 132 that "we still can't give up" after the plane took significant damage from floch's attack.
the core of hanji's character is how they saw so much beauty in the world and life in general. that's where their appreciation for all that it is living comes from, their drive to understand and bridge understanding between the living.
hanji chose to stay behind in odiha because they don't want to give up on the world. hanji devoted their heart for a world where humanity can live on. hanji's been doing this the moment they were introduced.

I don't understand why zk is blamed for things that are disliked in the live action. this fandom would blame everything on zk but never acknowledge valid criticisms in the original show.

can I just say something? I observed that whenever there's new LH official content, certain people will jump in and insert their own ships. typically, it's people who have a history of actively hating on LH because they ship the two with other characters. look, I'm not trying to discourage people from sharing their HCs, but I'm just pointing out a pattern that I've been noticing for so long. it kinda bothers me that certain fans still appear to be incapable of accepting that L and H have a relationship outside those two characters (ES and MB). L and H are friends and share a bond regardless of whether those characters existed or not. but every time there's new official content of L and H together, these particular people always insert ES and MB in the narrative. as I have mentioned, most people who do this, heavily dislike the idea of LH having a connection or being romantically involved, so perhaps this is their more discreet way of invalidating LH?
(btw so we're clear, these particular people who I say that actively hate on LH are the ones who would make posts on how isym has "debunked" LH or that L hates H)

it genuinely frustrates me how everytime you point out these valid criticisms on KA you get labeled a misogynist when creators themeselves have made questionable statements on their intended dynamic (plus the stunt they pulled at SDCC). canon purists are constantly scrambling for crumbs to make it appear progressive and invalidate opinions of people who do not ship it.
personally I don't think KA are compatible and it's difficult for me to see them as partners. it all feels extremely one-sided and aang failing to understand katara's complexities and dictating his own beliefs on her in TSR was such a huge deal breaker. the non-con kiss at EIP made it even worse for me and it left a bad taste in my mouth that they just left it at that (when it was acknowledged that it was uncomfortable for katara considering that she canonically called out aang on that) but for some reason, the showrunners had them kiss at the end without even addressing it? what kind of message are they sending to their audiences that also consists of kids and teens? that it's okay to essentially force yourself to someone because they will reciprocate anyway? the counter argument is always that "he's just a 12 year kid" but the thing is, how do they think men with misogynistic tendencies grew up? it's mainly because such behaviors were left unchecked since childhood/teenage years. but everytime someone points this out, for some reason we are the bad guys here and are reaching too hard.
I wouldn't be this critical of KA if it's actually well written but I don't see it as a well-rounded romantic relationship. and don't even get me started on the aftermath as seen in the sequels.
honestly, I can't think of a single reason to enjoy or tolerate k@t/ang - everything about it gives me the biggest ick. usually I'm not that frustrated by ships, but this one really nags at my "this feels unjust" part of my brain. what likable quality is there?? even before I had any real opinion, I knew it was eugh... the way their interactions were written and shown always made me uncomfortable. "the younger boy has a crush on the babysitter" canonically being the creators' intent for their dynamic is not cute, wholesome or appealing to me whatsoever - particulary when that dynamic never changes throughout the entirety of the storyline, and their fundamental disagreements and conflicts are left unaddressed (to the BOY'S benefit).
the worst part is that the shippers try to make it seem like they're more cognizant of social justice, genocide, interracial relations (especially against zk fans) and a girl's needs. but the thing is, their arguments fall flat because the main character is so clearly the white creators' self insert whose romantic portrayal undeniably gives major "Nice Guy" red flags and treads incel territory: he doesn't need to earn her love - no, he is entitled to it. this is actually anti-feminist messaging and we never saw our girl's needs met in that dynamic. instead, it was him who was one-way benefitting from her mothering (which he wasn't bothered by), and his actions kept pulling her back into that role. in TSR, we see it even more - assuming the worst, lecturing and imposing his beliefs based on his idea of how she should be, not trying to listen or be present when he very well could have due to shared experiences of colonial violence. not to mention the grace, presence and non-judgmental comfort she'd offered him when he lost his bison and lost his temper.
at this point I am reminded that this series was made by white americans, so while the other characters can push the boundaries a little, the main character must be an enlightened boy with a supposedly higher moral conscience (in contrast to the angry, irrational brown girl) palatable to an audience residing in an imperial core (in which the majority of us do not regularly encounter or fight off the horrors of an active genocide). in other words, he unfortunately plays the role of a white man's mouthpiece for lukewarm takes - telling us essentially doing nothing is the correct answer to your loved one learning that an imperial soldier who murdered her family has made no amends and is out there walking free - no haunting, no memory, no consequence.
how does all of this not make one raise an eyebrow? by season 3 I really felt like someone had just thrown a tantrum in the writer's room and that's how we ended up here.
in some ways we got to see a fuller development and journey for zuko: we find zuko confronting his father become a better parallel to her confronting her mom's killer (that he considerately does not bring up on her journey), with both of them overcoming a generational trauma that share the same root cause. maybe we are drawn to this, maybe this feels more gut-wrenching, maybe this makes for a richer character arc because he is not a wide-eyed baby-faced self-insert, journeyed alone, and therefore was not shielded from having to make tough choices (like the main character's s2/s3 final dilemma). to think - his story more closely mirrors Buddha's own origin story! the irony.
it really is mindboggling because there are so many beautiful ways to write a friends -> lovers story, and it doesn't even need to be complicated. (if anyone's read fma, just look at ed/winry - heartwarming, reciprocated, felt natural and earned.)
this one's an unfortunate, utter mess, and season 3 plus the comics and LoK seemed to rub salt on the wound instead of making any meaningful attempts at clarifying previous issues and improving their relations. I just feel like seeing this pair as overall wholesome or something is ignoring certain key moments in the storyline, especially those concerning our girl. you'd really need to AU-ify their dynamic to get to a point where a romantic relationship between them (that is actually mutual) feels right or compatible.

thing is, A wasn't even able to fully grasp K's grief in the southern raiders episode. he looked at from his own perspective based on how he was taught. perhaps he meant well but then again if them ending up together was set it stone from the beginning—if he was supposed to become her life partner, why wasn't he the person who accompanied her this journey? why wasn't he the person who understood her best? him not getting that she needed to find a semblance of closure? when K returned, he assumed that she forgave her mom's killer simply because she chose not to kill him, disregarding the K's complexity. in this journey, she had Z instead. and I don't think it only happened because the main characters each needed an episode with him. TSR worked because he understands the pain K was going through as he had been there. catacombs scene already hinted at this. TSR put things into perspective to me just how truly incompatible KA are. plus the fact that K did tell A that she knows he wouldn't understand? how was I supposed to believe that this relationship was ever gonna work? it doesn't help that there were other things left unresolved between them before we jumped to the ending scene cementing KA's endgame status.

couldn't have said it any better. katara and zuko accompanied each other in the most pivotal and monumental moments in their lives and it worked because their character arcs were bound to cross at one point, and it culminated in the finale. katara facing her mother's killer for example, happened when zuko finally joined the gaang. it's possible that some of the writers may already have this idea since that moment in the crystal catacombs when zuko said it was something they had it common. imo, it made the most sense to have zuko join katara in that journey. yes, sokka is there, but I think his perspective of things was a bit different, including how he processed his grief. it is canon that sokka said when he thinks of his mother, he can only picture katara. but it was not the same case for katara because no one was able to take the role for her the same way she did for his brother. kya died protecting katara and that resonated strongly with zuko who also lost his mom by protecting him. additionally, zuko knows it best what it would be like to face the person who has caused your life so much torment. he also understands it best what it means to live your life not having any closure.
the way the canon development of their dynamic got shelved reminds me so much of how antis typically approach a ship they dislike? forget about denying just the possibility of a romantic relationship, they would erase any semblance connection between the two characters because they are aware that the bond they have (even without any explicit romantic hints) threatens their ship.
kind of a rant I guess?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway, the way zuko and katara's dynamic was developed by the writers was just so compelling. from the parallels, their individual arcs and how they converged? I'm not surprised that the fandom is still going strong 20 years after the show began airing. however, its popularity appears to have made the creators bitter to the point that they'd do everything to dimiss said development and made sure the two would never be seen in the same frames in the succeeding official works (lok for example). now you have some fans acting as if they never became close and that they remained enemies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm afraid this might also become the case for the upcoming film. which is a shame because they have one of the best developed dynamics in the show. while zuko and katara ultimately did not became romantically involved in the canon storyline, it is still canon that they bonded and became friends. they were together in one of the most important moments of their lives. it's unfortunate that the creators seemingly want to ignore and undo all develoment because plenty of fans saw so much potential in zutara rather than just shipping the official endgame pairing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I understand I can't force everyone to see the vision but then again their bond is undeniably present in the primary material. my critique is more on how the creators approached zuko and katara's relationship in the succeeding works like lok as well as the comics. considering some of their statements in reference to zutara and its fans, I get this feeling that the creators' treatment of their relationship in the sequels may have come from a place of bitterness.

"hanji and the others" and "levi or any of the others"
the fact that they still have to mention each other specifically even if they're already addressing everyone
bonus: hanji already entrusted the entire survey corps to armin but still made it a point to mention levi, specifically
