The whumpee trusted too easily, they just liked seeing the best in people, and hated the idea of anyone being irredeemable. The whumper was everything the whumpee didn’t want to confront, pure, shameless evil, senseless and cruel at anyone too weak to stop it.

injured noises
heavy/harsh/deep breathing
panting/hyperventilating
ragged breathing - they can't get enough air in, they can't breathe
breathing sharply - not even realising it, it's just instinctual to hiss like that after being slashed and hurt
shuddering breaths; stunned from everything that has happened while steeling themselves for more
whimpering - because of a yell suppressed
acute/emotional pain responses: yelping, screaming, shrieking, wailing
the facade breaking - face falling, all the suppressed noises coming up and out of their broken body; they cry for much longer than they even thought they had energy for
other quiet noises of pain: gasping, hissing, grunting, groaning

manhandling
forcing whumpee to their knees
kicked in the back of the knee so they're forced to kneel - bonus points if then their head is forced up by the hair so they have to make eye contact as well :)
being pushed to the ground/kicked against the wall
an ordinarily strong whumpee being held by two henchmen so the Big Bad can kick/punch them without worrying about retaliation
steering a captive by their shoulders - bonus points if they aren't even handcuffed; the captor just knows they won't run - the steady weight of their hand is enough
a prisoner being ransomed back to their loved ones and being roughly shoved towards them - bonus points if they're gagged or tied up and the captor lazily goes "oh, will you get that for me? these are new gloves :)" so whumpee has to go through the humiliation of being seen at their lowest
when a character is grabbed by the front of their shirt to be pulled closer to someone making a threat
when a cooperative captive is still shoved around just to prove a point
arm twisted behind them to provide an incentive for giving information
tilting the chin to force eye contact, bonus points if this is with some kind of weapon!! knives, guns :) smth so delicious about the way they gulp and move away from it, as if that will actually do anything. it just backs them more into a corner, but oh, that's fun too

the CHEESY trope I'm guilty of enjoying is "I thought-" "You don't think- you obey." is it overdone? perhaps. but you can pry it from my cold dead hands.

Top-Tier Villain Motivations
They will be safe. It doesn't matter who else or what else burns as long as They will be safe.
I will be safe. The hunger and the cold will never touch me again.
Fuck any bitch who's prettier(/cooler/better-liked/better at making dumplings) than me.
Yes, Master
Love me. Love me. Love me. Love me. LOVE ME!
I know the terrible things these so-called "heroes" will do if I don't stop them (<- is absolutely wrong)
I don't want a better future, I want a better past!
No other way to get performance art funded these days

when the whumpee is snarky and scared all at once. the backtalk is an instinct, a manifestation of their anger at the situation they're in, at the horrible things being done to them, but they regret it immediately half the time. all that bravado is false and they're terrified inside. snapping insults at whumper at the same time that they're shaking so hard it's visible, knowing that they're about to pay for it, that by the end of this they'll be crying. unable to stop either response.

Superhero / Spidersona Whump
hey guys remember how I did that poll 1000 years ago about posting writing. well now im procrastinating so im doing that. now.
it's more like. implied/post whump. but idk
The Actual Writing
Biofyre hadn't slept in a week. Not more than a few hours, anyway. Spidershock was missing. Spidershock was missing, and he had no leads. He knew their relationship hadn't exactly been perfect prior to his disappearance, but hardly bad enough to justify running away. He splashed water on his face, as if it would wash away the aching exhaustion that seeped into every muscle in his body. From across the apartment, he heard the doorbell ring.
Who the fuck, he thought to himself, irritation bristling in his chest as he made his way to the door. He felt his heart drop to his stomach, though, when the person standing in front of him was no other than Spidershock.
“Hey…” he said, almost sheepishly as he raised his hand in a half-hearted wave.
Maybe it was the irritation still flaring in his chest. Maybe it was the exhaustion and the stress getting to him. Maybe it was the shock. But Biofyre’s first reaction was the heat of anger. Spidershock had responsibilities, he had a sworn duty to this city! He couldn't just go and disappear like that!
“Get inside.” He hissed. Spidershock made his way into the apartment as Biofyre shut and locked the door. “What the hell was that!?” He tilted his head with displeasure. “Where have you been?”
Spidershock's eyes scrunched with an unreadable expression, the rest of his face concealed by a black facemask. “I can't tell you that.” He said curtly.
Biofyre scoffed. “Oh, don't give me that.” He took a few steps towards Spidershock. “You can't go off the radar like that and expect everyone to welcome you back like nothing happened when you won't even say where you've been.”
“You don't get it!” Spidershock took a step away from him. Biofyre's jaw clenched, his eyebrow twitching. Spidershock was in the hero business. He shouldn't have been acting so- so immature.
“You're damn right I don't get it! I don't get why you think it's acceptable to disappear without so much as a word! I was worried sick!” Biofyre continued to advance towards Spidershock, keenly aware of how he practically towered over the younger man.
Spidershock's eyebrows furrowed. “Worried!? As if you ever worry about anything except your stupid standing!”
“You think I'm worried about my fucking reputation!?” The fury in Biofyre's chest funneled into his fist, the flame sparking to life before quickly being suffocated as Biofyre slammed his fist harshly against the brick wall.
All of that fury was gone in an instant when he saw how Spidershock flinched, bringing his arms up defensively. His entire body language changed like the flip of a switch. The tension in Biofyre's body shifted as guilt and concern settled in his gut. This was…deeply unlike Spidershock. The two of them were silent for a long, uncomfortable moment, with their breathing as the only sound.
Biofyre took a step back, trying to give him space. “What… happened to you?” He asked carefully, a kind of softness in his tone that he hated to admit was reserved for Spidershock.
"I-" Spidershock's voice was quiet, as if he had to force the words to come out at all. "Can't tell you." The words carried weight this time. Fear. Danger.
Biofyre's eyes narrowed, and something tightened in his chest. The way Spidershock tensed, the way he spoke...it sent alarm bells off in his head. This wasn't the same Spidershock he had known. This one was deeply, viscerally afraid. And that worried him far more than when Spidershock was missing. His mind searched for some kind of answer. "Did someone threaten you?”
Slowly, reluctantly, Spidershock pulled off the facemask to reveal a split lip, and bruises in various stages of healing along his jaw. His eyes stayed on the wall, refusing to meet Biofyre's gaze. His silence spoke multitudes.
Biofyre’s breath caught in his throat. No. He practically stumbled forwards, cupping Spidershock's beaten face in his hands with uncharacteristic gentleness. His eyes scanned over every feature of his face. “Who?” he asked quietly, through gritted teeth. Anger flared in his chest again - this time on Spidershock's behalf - but he forced it to remain there for the time being. Spidershock was far more important.
After chewing on the words for a long moment, Spidershock finally admitted the name. “Tectonic.”
“Tectonic?” Biofyre's eyes widened. “How on earth did you get involved with Tectonic?” The mere fact that Spidershock came into contact with him alone would have worried him, much less like this.
Spidershock shook his head slightly, his voice cracking a bit as he tried to keep his composure. "It was just supposed to be a minor bust. The kind we've done a million times. I wanted- I wanted to prove I could do it." The silent just like you hung heavy in the air. Spidershock swallowed hard. "But there were too many of them. They brought backup."
Biofyre wanted to call him reckless. To tell him he wasn't ready, ask him why he would dare go out on his own. Instead, he only felt guilt. He had been the one to instill that drive, that desire to improve, so deep in Spidershock's head. He knew the desperation to prove oneself all too well. “How long did they have you?”
“Til last night. I got lucky. One of the guards, they recognized me. They said I saved- them or- or a family member of theirs? I didn't quite catch it all. But they helped me escape as payback.”
Last night. That meant Spidershock had been captive for about the entire time he was missing. Biofyre let out a sharp breath, cursing in his head. The idea of Spidershock, his sidekick Spidershock, being in the hands of those monsters- it made him sick to his stomach.
With more pressure than necessary, Biofyre pulled Spidershock flush against him, wrapping his arms around him. He needed to make sure he was real. That he was truly, actually here, and wouldn't slip away again.
Spidershock was surprised at first, but he quickly melted into the hug, the gesture finally drawing actual tears out of him. "I didn't mean it.” He whispered between stifled sobs.
Biofyre didn't have to ask what he was referring to. “I know.” His arms tightened around Spidershock, rubbing his back in an attempt to comfort him. “It's okay.” He murmured. Inside, he felt swirling guilt and anger, directed at himself, as well as Tectonic and all of the henchmen involved. His mind was already starting to plan the revenge. Tectonic would not get away with this.

Best books to give you whumperflies! (I'm my opinion)
1) Outlander series, haven't read but from multiple sources they say it's one of the best.
2) Necromancer's Light by Tavia Lark, Highly rated and recommended on reddit lol
3) Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock. Again highly recommended on reddit
4) Death From Beyond: War-bound by Jayda Cogar. This one I have read, and the whumperflies it gave me was crazy, personally recommend.
5) Jaden Baker by Courtney Kirchoff
6) The Way Of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
7) Exo by Fonda Lee. The kid's basically a hostage the whole, so if you like that, it's a good book overall.
Feel free to add more! Hopefully that helps!
