Happy Black History Month! Today, I want to talk about Toni Morrison. She was an author, editor, and professor known for her writing, like Beloved, that explore Black identity and experience. She's won multiple awards such as the Pultizer Prize, Nobel Prize, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. In college, she was part of a theatre group called the "Howard University Players." That troupe often toured the segregated south, allowing her to see the racial hierarchy and how it divided people based on the color of their skin. After school, she became a professor and an editor of fiction and other novels written by African American writers. She didn't publish her first book, "The Bluest Eye," until she was 39 years old. Her most significant novel was "Beloved," which was based on a true story of an enslaved African-American woman. The novel was a best seller for 25 weeks and won many awards, one of which was the Pultizer Prize.

Happy Black History Month! Today I'd like to highlight Dr. George Washington Carver. He was a scientist, bontanist, and inventor in the 1900s. He wanted to help poorer farmers who were reliant on the market and had cotton exhausted lands, hoping to provide them with crops that brought nutrients back to the soil and were self-sufficent like soy beans and peanuts. He wrote free brochures with information on crops, techniques, and recipes. He also made the Jessup Wagon, a laboratory on wheels that he regarded as the most significant contribution he made towards helping farmers. He believed that science was technology to serve human needs rather than egos of powerful men.
