Rey’s characterization in TFA is interesting, the juxtaposition of her personality traits is fitting for the protagonist of a trilogy about the two halves of the force coming together and meeting in the gray. Rey is defensive, serious, even a bit hot-headed but also almost childishly naive and innocent. Rey is able to do the hard work of caring for and defending herself all alone, but emotionally holds onto the childhood dream her parents will return despite the obvious fact that they won’t. She is fierce, able to defend herself against multiple larger assailants with only a stick and ready to fight a stranger on the word of a droid she just met, but Rey is also gentle, kind, and selfless unwilling to sell BB8 for parts even though it would mean for the first time since she was a child knowing she’d have enough to eat.

By and throughout TLJ, we see Rey mature and see situations with more nuance (largely because of Kylo/Ben challenging her beliefs), but she still maintains her light-hearted optimism as well as her fiery passion. Rey believes in Ben (the way she believed in her parents) even when no one else does, perhaps to a degree that could be called irrational although she ends up being correct*, and she stands up for Ben’s child self so fiercely that she bests Luke in combat. This use of righteous anger and passion as a source of strength is of “the dark side” but this trilogy is about true balance, it’s okay to have and express emotions and love and attachment as long as you do not lose yourself and stay true to your principles. That is balance. That is maturity.

*Rey was correct that going to Ben would make him turn back to the light, just as Han and Leia were right too when they reached out to him. Ben didn’t turn right at those moments, but the seeds of doubt were planted in him each time someone he loves reached out to him. Ben is in a cult, he was abused and brainwashed as a child by Snoke. That kind of brainwashing cannot be undone all at once unfortunately, but it can be undone if and when the brainwashed individual is willing.

Of course, we see similar juxtaposition in Kylo/Ben as he is Rey’s antagonist and love interest, he mirrors her. Ben as Kylo behaves in ruthless, cruel, violent ways - yet we see many moments of emotional vulnerability, of conflict and deep pain. Kylo/Ben is very soft-spoken when he’s not actively screaming which is something he is often forcing on purpose to gain dark side power. There is little in-between in his speech, either his voice is soft and gentle even when he is being antagonistic or he is fully feral yelling. Unlike Rey who is often more expressive and forceful in her speech even when she’s being good and kind but never reaches the level of unhealthy rage Kylo/Ben does, one of many interesting contrasts.

Ben needs to embrace his softness, to show kindness and compassion for people instead of focusing on these grandiose ideas and dwelling in rage, pain, and resentment. Rey needs to embrace her passion, to show righteous anger when needed and fight against true evil like Snoke and The First Order itself. The darkness and the light in both of them evens each other out. One is not all dark and the other all light, no one is truly, some people are just out of balance more drastically than others.
