Kain felt an unwitting smile cross his face. Rosa's words were a soothing balm over a long held hurt and resentment, as they always were. She always knew the right words to say to calm his soul, but that was just the natural healer she was, he supposed.

“And I, you,” he replied. “Truly.”

If only he wasn't such a coward in matters of feelings and emotions, he could tell her how he felt. How much he hated that he had not acted, and now Cecil was the object of her affections. Still, he could hardly begrudge them their happiness – he was still included in that, of course. And she may have very well rejected his advances, if he had made any. His jealousy would have to remain hidden under the surface where no one could see it, for the rest of forever.

“And it's appreciated,” Kain responded with a tight nod.

In front of him, the snarling purple beast charged, slashing its massive tail across where Kain had been standing just a moment ago. Great globules of spittle dripped from its mouth as it growled, showing off rows and rows of sharp teeth. It focused its next attack on Cecil, allowing Kain a moment to breathe and recenter himself.

“Unfortunately,” he went on, hands clutched around his weapon as he prepared another attack, “these great lugs seem to be resistant to magic. So unless you're going to get out that whip of yours, you'd better leave this one to the boys.”

“Rosa...”

Kain turned his gaze toward Rosa, actually meeting her eye for the first time since he had come into the room. Her words were so earnest and kind that for a moment, he actually let himself believe that she meant them. But of course she did – Rosa would not lie about something like this – but it was still quite impossible for him to believe that she would still want him around.

Not after everything that had happened. Not since he had been taken by his own jealousy and had allowed himself to be used by Golbez.

Rosa might have forgiven him, but Kain was a long way from forgiving himself.

He forced himself to give her a small, reassuring smile. “It won't be forever,” he said. And indeed, he did not plan to be gone forever; it would only be until he had proven himself on Mount Ordeals, the same way Cecil had. “I'm sure I'll return before you even realize I've gone.”
