“You’re the most irritating man I’ve ever met.” I fumed, attempting to wrest my hand from his. “You’re a complete and utter ass—”

He gripped my hand securely in his. “Calm yourself, darling, and retract your claws.” He chuckled, before leaning in. “Even trussed up in stays and hoops, I’m glad you’re still your unrefined self.”

My eyes widened as I felt his breath tickle the fine hair on my cheeks. My stomach flip-flopped against the supportive whalebone of my corset, possibly from the building heat of our activity. It was almost embarrassing how flustered I felt by his words, though perhaps it was the seductive appeal of being held by another human being. His hand slid further around my waist, so that his arm bracketed completely around me, and our fronts were only separated by a few centimeters of space. As the fine black wool of his suit rubbed against the exposed skin of my arm, I could feel the warmth and solidness of his person.

Why did he smell so good? I couldn’t quite pin down the notes of his cologne, but it was familiar. Was it…rosemary? Lemon?

I pressed my lips into a line, replacing my hand in its proper flat position atop his shoulder. “Is this how a gentleman steers a lady around the room?” I scoffed, forcing a sarcastic tone into my voice while praying that my breathlessness wouldn’t overtake me.

A toothy grin split his face, and I felt his hand smooth down where my right hip curved into my waist. “I said I could be one, not that I am.” He chuckled, his eyes flashing down in a way which made me feel very perceived. Before I could react, he ducked his head further, towards my ear. “And you must forgive me, it has obviously been quite some time since I’ve had such a rose in my arms.” He murmured, his voice silky smooth.

My retort caught in my throat, his words causing my heart to race. The air felt heavy like smoke, billowing in my lungs with every shallow breath. The strings in the band played their last phrase, singing together in one last crescendoing note, though them and the crowd’s applause fizzled into nothingness, replaced by only the rush of blood in my ears. Our movement slowed to a stop, but Mr. Ancunín made no effort to remove me from his arms.

My head instinctually twitched towards his proximity, and I felt his breath puff against my jaw. The wide curve of his pink lips was directly at my eyeline, and I dragged my gaze up to meet his. His dark eyes twinkled in the closeness, challenging, and his lips smirked, knowingly.

When was the last time I was held like this?
