jojo siwa claiming she's revitalizing gay pop and releasing 'karma' on the same night as conan gray's 'found heaven' and chappell roan's 'good luck babe' is so poetically ironic. it's like the universe WANTS to draw a comparison between jojo and queer pop artists.

the thing that makes queer pop compelling as a genre is the unique storytelling and experiences of queer artists told through their music. that doesn't necessarily mean every song by a queer artist has to be about their queerness. they don't have to scream "hey i'm gay!" in every single song they write. but claiming to be "reinventing gay pop" should mean you're telling interesting stories about your queer experience, right???

'found heaven' by conan gray is about growing up as a queer kid with religious guilt and disapproving parents. he equates being in love in an authentic way to "finding heaven", and the piece as a whole resonates with a TON of queer people in different stages of their lives. some people can look back at their childhoods and how much they've grown since then, some can relate because they're currently going through what conan's written about, and some people can sympathize with the way some queer people are treated, even if they aren't necessarily queer themselves.

'good luck babe' is a song about queerness and compulsory heterosexuality. chappell sings about a woman she was in a relationship with who decided to settle down in a conventional marriage despite being queer. the song reflects the denial a lot of queer people go through (specifically regarding the lesbian experience) and the unfortunate way a lot of them end up repressing who they are to conform to societal standards. it's fun, it's campy, but its message is still poignant.

as for karma… there's nothing inherently queer about that song. the music video for the original version, ‘karma’s a bitch’ by brit smith, featured a heterosexual storyline. jojo buying the rights to a song she didn't write isn't inherently a bad thing, a lot of mainstream artists do that all the time. however, if you're claiming to be a pioneer of the “gay pop” genre and your music doesn't reflect any queer themes or experiences, is it really “gay pop”? again, queer artists don't have to write exclusively about their queerness, but if you try to present yourself as a voice for the queer community without telling any of their stories, you're not going to be lauded as some revolutionary figure. if any of the songs on jojo’s album are actually about her experience as a lesbian or contain any queer themes, then i think she'd qualify as a “gay pop” artist. but so far, she's given us a faux edgy, generic pop song and tried to market it as some insane never-been-done-before feat. and honestly, if her entire album is like this and she continues to market herself this way, it's a slap in the face to all the genuine artists and storytellers in the queer community.

but let's stop talking about jojo siwa and start talking about the incredible queer artists who are truly breathing life into the "gay pop" genre: chappell roan, renee rapp, ben platt, conan gray, girl in red, kevin atwater, baby queen, mitski, clairo, dodie, and SO MANY MORE (feel free to add on some of your favourites because there are so many wonderful artists out there <3)

This is the same thing over and over again. Palestinians die every day, but it gets a lukewarm headline from mainstream media because death and destruction is inherent to Arabness. Then an aid convoy with white workers is obliterated, and now both the president of the United States and the president of Israel are making statements apologizing for “the poor protection of aid workers.” At one point we were seeing multiple reports a day of paramedics from the Palestine Red Crescent Society dying, but nothing. Crickets. Because they don’t care. And even in these “remorseful statements” there is a strategic reminder that white lives hold more weight than brown lives.

Please, please constantly challenge and reject the narrative that any region is naturally more prone to war than any other, like that's a characteristic inherent to its make-up, like that's geographically assigned risk the same way an area can be earthquake-prone or hurricane-prone.

There has never been a utopia on Earth and nowhere is entirely free of conflict, but this disastrous scale of violence inflicted upon the SWANA region is a deliberate and calculated effort of destabilization by Western powers who want to bleed the region dry. It's not an immutable part of the contour of the land that its people must adapt to and live with. It can be stopped and should be stopped. These people were once free and can be freed again.

Every time you see someone hand-waving a crisis at this scale as "conflict in the Middle East" it is an abominable tool to dehumanize Arabs to the point where nobody bats an eye at the death of their children.

Examine what that phrase means. What is a "conflict in the Middle East"? What happens in Yemen isn't what happens in Morocco isn't what happens in Palestine isn't what happens in Iraq, but this catch-all term is meant to translate in your mind into "problems are happening where problems are always happening", because of course they are! Conflict in the Middle East? What else is new, clouds in the sky? Fish in the sea? It lulls you into apathy; Arabs are dying - but that's what they do, don't they?

And so three goals of the perpetrators of this violence are achieved. First, they wash their hands from it; they didn't set the place on fire, it was already like this when they got there! Second, does it even matter whose fault it is? Who cares about a dead brown child anyway? Who's counting the death toll? Third, since this is an unchangeable quality of their region, and has nothing to do with the West, why protest it? Why fight for them? Why demand anything out of Western leaders?

Progress photos for the applique quilt im working on. Im almost positive I've chosen the second worst assembly strategy possible. Right now the whole thing is just incredibly pointy and takes up my entire floor. Technique is -3 out of 10, dont recommend if you enjoy having floor space and not worrying about getting pins in the bottom of your foot

my graduation is confirmed and I’m finally released from my college. If I had failed I would’ve been suffering terrifying sums of debt so now I’m really relieved.

but my college years have left me with a kind of regret about my major, which makes it hard to feel totally happy about graduation; I majored in cultural studies as I had been curious about gender images represented in media. but as I moved up through the grades I realized that experience as a literature/sociology student would not be much welcomed when it comes to immediate usefulness in society.

majority of students I’ve known outside my classes had been already aware of that before they chose to major in engineering, agriculture, economics and so on while I was dreaming of pursuing my vague curiosity.

also I found out I used to be interested in nature science especially biology in my junior high/high school years. though I took a different course (partly because of my poor math scores) studying science still sounds kinda fascinating to me now.

above all these regrets are probably coming from guilt I feel for my parents, who have financially supported me throughout my life. I know they would’ve expected me to gain knowledge that’s worth their support for years and decent profession—yet what I learned in college is not ‘useful’ and I’m still jobless(it’s not because of my major tho)

but I also feel I wanna stay away from the assertive thought on what is ‘useful’ and what is not. now I'm a bit too tired to produce something that can enrich human lives right now. in colege I did a research on how gender noncoforming hairstyles have been marginalized in society. at least it helped me figure out how I want my life to be and it is 'useful' for me in its own way. (sorry I'm tired and not digging down deeper here)

I'm thinking of going to college again someday but that doesn't sounds realistic so far. but I'm gonna begin re-learning math or biology for fun because I wanna choose not to feel unhappy.
