what’s so crazy abt natla is that the cast is so phenomenal. the show itself absolutely butchers the story in all aspects other than appearance. the heart of the entire show and the entire emotional arc of avatar, the family that the gaang becomes, is no where to be seen within the actual text of the show yet every interaction between the actors behind the scenes and on social media has that heart. it’s so sad to see actors that look exactly like their characters and who understand and care for their characters so deeply be given material that feels hollow and void of all of this. natla has an insane level of untapped potential buried beneath netflix’s terrible handling of the story and that’s what i find the most frustrating and upsetting.

Here's kataang art dump. Reprise.
P.S. don't ask me why I handed Katara what looks suspiciously like an electric trimmer.

i won’t take this as gospel and I do agree that ehasz is overrated, but there is some evidence to suggest that this encounter could be true, maybe just overexaggerated:
- aaron ehasz has expressed interest in tokka in the 2018 interview where he denies being a zutara or kataang shipper.
- i feel like the person writing it could easily have stated that aaron prefers kataang over zutara if they were making it up. but the fact that (in the post) he said tokka makes me think that it is in line with an ehasz type of answer, especially because just a couple of weeks ago he posted a joke video where he chose azutara while poising the question of kataang vs zutara.
- the ending of legend of korra with korrasami parallels a wedding (zhu li and varrick’s). the atla finale wouldn’t be the first time they use the ending scene to portray a marital bond.
- aaron has ALWAYS pushed for a season 4. he keeps changing the narrative on this supposed season 4, even after bryke corrected him, but him answering that there’s a likelihood for a season 4 sounds exactly like him tbh. that’s the most believable part of this interaction.
there’s still a likely chance of it being fake. but it DOES sound much more real than all of those interviews made by zutara shippers claiming to be aaron ehasz.
saw this floating around sorry to rain on my fellow kataangs.. parade but after all the time spending about how zutaras pushed a fake interview with this guy im not gonna blindly believe this happened. Plus aaron ehasz is highly overrated in this fandom anyway.. i mean his idea for irohs son being killed by spirits? Awful terrible. i really dont get the whole obsession people get with this gu gives of jkr making up new stuff on the fly vibes to me.
Tumblr media
i mean come on does any of this really sound beliveable? esp that END part of it.. and the whole s4 is as likely to happen as invader zim being renewed . IE was never planned. use your heads atla fandom.

this needs to be said: katara demolishing structural misogyny in the north, staging a revolution within a prison and empowering victims of colonization, and committing ecoterrorism to destroy environmental pollution as a result of colonial industrialization are all strong examples for why she would be anti-monarchy and refuse to serve as the central figurehead of the nation that committed ethnic cleansing and genocide amongst her people. everything in the text suggests that katara would live her life as an activist and lawmaker, putting in the post-colonial work to empower and liberate victims of colonization (the water tribes and the earth kingdom) AND establish laws that will enact structural and societal change. instead of taking on a monarchal role (a very decorative title in canon) to reform a nation that doesn’t require her help. stop pushing this future upon outspoken indigenous girls and women and presenting it as the most suitable future for us. it’s not. there are so many more aspects of katara’s future to headcanon than a disney-esque ending of queen living in the fire nation, adorned head to toe in red and gold, sleeping in the throne room of her oppressors.
Tumblr media
These posts are so painful
-Fire ladies are irrelevant asf. They are not leading anything
-Katara could never be the fire lady cuz she loves her CULTURE/IDENTITY
-The fire nation killed her mother, and yes, that's important. She's not gonna live in Sozin's room
-KATARA JUST DOESN'T WANT TO BE FIRE LADY
leave this girl alone if you don't understand her arc/character

what are ur opinions on zuko? outside of kataang/zutara discourse
i enjoy zuko’s character! growing up, i had a tough time relating to him (especially because the way he spoke to his uncle would’ve gotten me kicked out of my asian household) but i think his story and arc are well-written for a show that aired on nickelodeon in 2005. however, i don’t think it’s as well-written as people think it is, and there are definitely areas that could be improved especially in the latter half of book 2. for instance, i don’t think atla did a very good job at building up his desire for the throne (this is one part i think natla exceeds very well at) so when he just becomes the firelord at the end it’s like.. wait? when did you even want the throne?
the conclusion for zuko’s arc is that he becomes the firelord that will heal the fire nation after 100 years of war. i think atla did such a good job at separating zuko from the fire nation imperialist empire further and further throughout the seasons that they didn’t really do a good job building up his ascension to the throne and his replacement of his father, as the true firelord that is meant to heal his nation. i always think that they removed his agency surrounding the choice to become firelord, and sort of tacked it on at the end, like yeah buddy you kind of have to do this!
there’s not really many moments where we see zuko going like, “but if i was firelord, maybe things would be different,” and having those seeds planted early on so that at the end it’s less like ‘you, 16-17 year old boy, HAVE to take this on’ and more along the lines of ‘i WANT to do this. i believe i am the change that my nation requires.”
i also really like the interpretation of zuko’s character that he’s the gaang’s resident angsty teenage boy and NOT the interpretation (fuelled by ship wars) that he’s the gaang’s father figure. dadko makes me want to kill myself. it’s just blatantly not true.
but yeah, he’s my third fave after katara and aang.

I think people need to realize that it’s okay to like stuff and not have a deep reason for it
You can like a character because they’re cute, not because you identify with them You can like a ship because you think they look good together, not because of a deep emotional bond
You can like a song because it’s catchy, not because of the meaningful lyrics
If you like it that’s okay, you don’t have to have deep reason or meaning behind it

hi, this is a little unprompted, but i know you're the admin of kataangfanartarchive, so i had to ask - would you happen to know who drew this fanart? somebody reposted it on Twitter, but they said they found it on pinterest & don't know who drew it. i tried using google image search, but nothing has come up so far
Tumblr media
yes that is violet.shehai on instagram and they actually have requested not to repost their art AT ALL. so if you can dm that person and ask them to take it down that would be amazing!

What do you think about it? Zutara will probably be canon.
it probably will be! i just don’t care enough about natla to be invested in it. glad I don’t need to worry about that until 2-3 years in the future.
i will say though - there’s as much evidence of zukka being endgame in the live action as there is for zutara. I remember one day going through her account and there were tons of zutara fanart. now it seems like she’s no longer publicly liking zutara stuff, but zukka instead. so at this moment either ship could happen. i know the new showrunner who liked a ton of zutara stuff got rid of all the zutara in her likes and retweets before going private.

jon snow tv show cancelled because they "couldn't find the right story to tell"... oh, are they now realizing that by destroying the whole in-universe laws and the characters, d&d literally destroyed any chance of furthering the story? 🤷‍♀️

I think it needs to be reiterated: The Water Tribes weren’t colonized. Katara does not have “colonial trauma”, as one post suggests. The Water Tribes were never claimed by anyone else and were left completely alone besides The Fire Nation enacting genocide. If we are going to discuss “zutara colonization discourse”, then please do it right. Especially if y’all are gonna write long essays about it, given that all that time writing would end being partially for nothing since the thing you’re focusing on isn’t relevant to what anyone is saying.

“aang is brand new to modernity. all of his understanding of the world and culture is outdated by a century, plus the fact that he wasnt raised in the war like katara was. all of that plays a role in his understanding of love and dating and all that jazz. thwre are swrious gaps in cultural understanding and maturity.”
at this point you’re just making stuff out to be angry about and infantilizing aang into some sort of toddler. i also see a ton of projection going on. unfortunately, your desire to continue to apply YOUR narrow westernized views and mindset also reaps into how you view and interact with aang’s culture, especially his nomadic upbringing (adapted from tibetan buddhism).
aang is a NOMAD. prior to being trapped in the iceberg, he had spent his entire life travelling the entire world and meeting different people. in the comics where we get more of his backstory, he’s interacted with tons of air nomad girls his age. he’s travelled to the earth kingdom, the water tribes, and the fire nation. he has friends from across the four nations.
katara, by contrast, has grown up in exactly one place her entire life: the southern water tribe. at a very young age, all of the men in katara’s tribe had gone off to fight in the war. there were no boys around her age for whom she could develop romantic feelings for. there’s jet who comes after she leaves the south, but that infatuation lasts about a day. additionally, katara’s priorities were centered around taking care of her village and her people, to survive and make ends meet. what dating experience does 14 year old katara exactly have growing up sheltered and traumatized from the loss of her mother and burdened by the impact of war? i don’t see your paragraphs explaining why katara isn’t suitable to date like the way you do for aang - and you’re only arriving at these conclusions based on their particular ages, without even taking anything about the story or the characterizations into account.
throughout many of katara and aang’s (especially earlier) interactions, it’s katara being the one hesitant or timid about trying something new, and aang urging her on or changing her perspective. but yes, do go on about how aang wouldn’t know possibly anything about romance (even though he is perfectly capable of understanding grief, friendship, pain, revenge, and loss) and katara would be taking advantage of his clear “lack of cultural understanding and outdated mentality.” at this point, not only are you continuing to infantilize aang (an asian boy) and adultify katara (a dark-skinned indigenous girl) but you’re starting to demonstrate a clear lack of understanding towards the nomadic cultures that the air nomads were based on, prioritizing your own western perspectives of the world.
and no, it is absolutely not ableism to tell you to touch grass and broaden your understanding of how friend group dynamics work. your argument sounds extremely chronically online.
sorry to all the kataang shippers out there but kataang genuinely skeeves me out like

there’s no way you’re going to convince me that you genuinely had “sincere intentions” behind your post when you basically went “sorry kataang shippers but the ship grosses me out 😝 i must be the centre of attention at all times and everything should cater to MY experiences. since I, very important tumblr user, find the ship weird because i was once a 12 and 14 year old, then it must indeed be weird.”
you’ve been extremely condescending and entitled in the original post and in the follow up, so i have no reason but to believe you absolutely had intentions to start something. frankly, if you’re going to apply your personal real life experiences onto the ship, why not be consistent and do it for everything in atla? like come on, at least come up with a stronger argument before posting in the tag.
“i must worry about my honor” what’s there to worry about when you had none to begin with?
sorry to all the kataang shippers out there but kataang genuinely skeeves me out like

you stuck this in the kataang tag, basically went “kataang is genuinely disgusting” and also in the same breath went “but no judgement to kataang shippers 🥺” you know there’s an anti kataang tag for a reason right?
kataang is by no means a pedophilic or disturbing ship. you’re acting like a two year age gap between children (because yes, 14 year olds are considered children) is on the same plane as something genuinely illegal.
why are you acting like aang’s experiences are representative of the average sixth grader that you’ve encountered or been yourself? or that katara’s experiences are that of the average eighth grader? what 12 year old masters all four elements in a span of 9 months and defeats a genocidal dictator? why is it okay for aang to fight in a 100 year war, wield inhumane power, and potentially have to kill a genocidal dictator, but you draw the line at him falling in love and pursuing a relationship at the age of 13 (yes, he was 13 when he defeated ozai) with his best friend who is only two years older than him. also, i have no idea if you enjoy that other ship, i’m not really interested in checking out your blog enough to confirm - but 14 and 16/17 are also in two vastly different age groups. what would a tenth or eleventh grade boy do with a whole eighth grader? not to mention a 16/17 year old boy who spent months terrorizing her and her friends, betrayed her, sent an assassin after her, kidnapped her against her will - if you really want to apply real world logic to a fantasy setting. yes, he had underwent a redemption arc and she came to forgive him - but by real world standards, would that have compensated for his previous actions, especially when relationships have ended for far less?
you can dislike kataang all you want - but treating it as if it’s the equivalent to something morally reprehensible and sticking it in the tag is unacceptable behaviour. if a ship as harmless as kataang grosses you out so much and is apparently “problematic,” i have no idea how you manage to consume any other form of media.
sorry to all the kataang shippers out there but kataang genuinely skeeves me out like
