A Kiss that Became More
Emily Prentiss x reader
Warnings: Besides a creep, none that I can think off.
Tumblr media
You had been working with the BAU team for a year now and you were close with all of them. They have become your family, since you weren’t close with your own family.
After one tough case, you and the girls decided to go to a new bar. This was one Garcia found and thought it might be good to try out. You decided to dress up for a change, with a tight black dress that hugged your figure and made your eyes stood out. You looked hot.
And the girls clearly agreed when you approached them, playfully whistling at you and giving you compliments. Chief Emily Prentiss eyes darkened when they landed on you and when you met her gaze, a shiver went down your back. You really liked her, more than you should and you knew you shouldn’t.
She was twenty years older than you, and your boss. But you still really wanted her. It didn’t matter though, you thought she would never like you like that.
“Looking good Y/N,” Tara said, playfully winking at you. She had a smirk on her face that grew when she saw the flicker of jealousy on Emily’s face. Deciding to play on the jealousy further, Tara gently placed a kiss on the edge of your mouth and you gave her an surprised look - blush heavy on your cheeks.
You blushed and smiled sheepishly as she wrapped an arm around your shoulders, pulling you close to her body. She felt warm, and since you were in a dress and feeling a bit cold, you leaned against her side.
“So, dressing to impress Y/N/N anyone?” JJ asked, also smirking.
“Possibly,” You replied, giving her a playful wink. “Why interested?”
JJ laughed, rolling her eyes. “Of course, it’s you.” She waved her hand at you, showing her wedding ring. “Unfortunately for you, I’m taken.”
“Ah dammit!” You said with a pout, making the four girls laugh - even Emily who didn’t like you playfully flirting with a married JJ. “Anyway, I’m going to get a drink. Does anyone want anything?”
After checking with the girls, you went up to the bar. “Rum and Coke please?”
“Can I buy you a drink?” A cocky guy asked next to you. He had a slimy smirk on his face that made you feel uncomfortable.
“I’m good,” You said stiffly, turning back to the bartender that gave you a sympathetic smile and your drink.
“How about your number then?” The guy asked, stepping closer to you and making you feel even more uncomfortable.
“I’m not interested,” You said. “Besides I’m seeing someone.”
The guy looked at you disbelieving. “You’re just saying that to get rid of me. Why? I’m hot and I can give you what you need.”
You looked at him with shock and disgust. Was he for real? You clearly wasn’t interested and just wanted to get a drink. He evidently wasn’t leaving you alone, so you quickly turned around and approached the girls.
You could hear him behind you but you didn’t care, only had eyes for Emily who was staring at you with her dark beautiful eyes and concern on her face. She frowned worriedly at you. “Y/N are you alright?”
Instead of replying, you grasped her face and pulled her into a desperate kiss. She kissed you back, holding you against her. Her lips felt strong and full of love. She slipped her tongue into your mouth, making you moan.
You didn’t even notice the creep that followed you leave, instead you were focused on the way her hands felt against your waist and how good her mouth felt. You felt the want deep in your underwear, wanting to have her in another way too.
After what felt like hours, you pulled away from Emily - hair rustled, lipstick smudged, cheeks a bright red. You could hear the others talking in the background, but your eyes were only focused on Emily who was staring back at you.
“I’m sure there was another way to get rid of that creep,” Emily said with a smirk, eyes flashing angrily at the thought of him. She had a smug glint in her eyes, at getting to kiss you. Emily might have possibly smirked smugly at Tara, who rolled her eyes knowingly.
“Sorry, i thought it would get rid of him. I just saw you and you looked so damn beautiful, and I’ve been wanting you for a while now…” You rambled, blushing and rubbing the back of your neck. Emily grabbed your face, pulling you into another kiss, and you melted against her.
“Awww, that’s so cute!” Garcia said excitedly, beaming when you and Emily pulled away from each other and turned to the girls. The both of you laughed, continuing to chat with them and have a good night.
She had a wrap around your waist, which stayed there the entire time. When it came to the night ending, you left with Emily and went back to her place.
“I didn’t say it at the bar but I want you too,” Emily admitted, when you joined her in bed, cuddling against her. “I’ve liked you from the moment I met you. You have a fire and a passion, and so much hope, it’s so refreshing.” She gently grasped your cheek with a smile. “You are also funny and cheesy and sweet.”
“Hey, I’m not cheesy!” You said, trying hard not to smile but failing miserably. She smirked, pulling you into another kiss, which eventually went further.
The next morning you went on a breakfast date, which was then followed by many more dates. Three months later you and Emily moved into together. And after a year, she proposed to you.
Now you were staring at her down the aisle and you couldn’t believe you were marrying this wonderful woman, and you couldn’t be any happier. You were wrong though, when you and Emily two months later ended up adopting an abandoned baby girl from a case.

Alone
The Fosters x reader
Stef Foster x daughter!reader
Lena Foster x daughter!reader
Warnings: self harm, depression
Tumblr media
You had just got home after a long day at school. After hanging up your coat and putting away your shoes, you reluctantly joined your family at the table for dinner.
You unusually sat next to Stef, wanting comfort from being close to her. You didn't normally sit next to her as you liked sitting next to Callie and going over photography stuff. Today felt really long and being around all those people at school socially drained you. You also felt helplessly sad and empty at the same time, almost like nothing mattered anymore but also everything felt overwhelming. Everything hurts. And a part of you felt like you couldn't breathe. You just want the comfort of your moms, even if that means you couldn't ask them outwardly and just have to sit next to them.
You didn't notice Stef and Lena exchanging surprised looks, or the way Stef subtly watched you out the corner of her way. Instead you pretended to listen in the banter your siblings were having, Jude proudly announcing his recent grade, and nodding and laughing along in the right place.
Stef reached out underneath the table and gently grasped your hand. When you looked at her with sadness gleaming in your eyes, you gave her a small smile. She looked at you questioningly, concerned, and when you nodded at her unconvincingly; she frowned slightly. Stef gave you a look, indicating that you were going to be talking with both her and Lena after dinner.
When it came to dinner ending, you jumped up from your seat and immediately rushed to the bathroom - hoping they would forget to talk to you. You knew they wouldn't but you just weren't up for an emotional talk after the day you had. You didn't want them to change the way they'd look at you, if you told them. They would be heartbroken and sad, that much you knew, so you couldn't tell them.
After closing the door behind you and leaving the lights off, you sat down on the floor. Your hands grasped desperately at your head, as you rocked back and forth, tears bubbling in your eyes.
Sobs quietly wracked in your chest as you tried to fight the urge to bring out your pocket knife. This happened most days, and most days you lost. You hated hurting yourself but you couldn't stop.
The pain helped. It made the pain inside temporarily stop, it helped you breathe. You needed to breathe, to stop the hurt drowning inside you. The cuts helped reflect the pain inside, even though you always felt disgusted and ashamed afterwards.
Instinctively, you pulled the pocket knife out of your pocket and clipped it into place. Your hands trembled as you bought the blade to your skin. Again. Again. And again. There was a sting, and burning, then finally relief.
Then the emptiness and pain came back in a rush. And you sobbed as you dropped the knife, wrapping your bloody arms around your trembling legs.
You didn't notice the bathroom door opening, nor did you hear the gasps from Lena and Stef. However, you did notice two pairs of arms being wrapped around you.
You allowed yourself to be pulled up against Stef's chest, tightly grasping at her shirt. Tears rolled down your cheeks as you quietly sobbed. Stef and Lena both held you, murmuring reassuringly into your ear and telling you how much they loved you and that they had you.
"We got you Y/N," Lena said softly, sharing a pained look with her wife.
"And we're not going anywhere," Stef added. "You're not disposable, you're not worthless, and no matter how tough things get we're not going anywhere." She held your face, staring into your glistening eyes. "We love you Y/N, and we're here for you."
Lena nodded in agreement, placing kisses on your forehead as she held both you and Stef. You allowed yourself to relax in their arms, deciding to let them be there for you.
You watched as Stef pulled out a first-aid kit from the cupboard. She gently cleaned the blood of your arms and made sure to clean the cuts, so they wouldn't get infected. You felt tears gleam in your eyes at the ugliness of the cuts and scars on your arms, ashamed of what you did.
Stef, seeing this, placed gentle kisses on your cuts before grasping your cheek to make your gaze meet her eyes. "You are beautiful Y/N, absolutely beautiful, you hear me?"
"This shows how you fought, and survived," Lena said. "And now we're going to help you, we promise."
You watched as Stef gently bandaged up both arms, before pulling you back into her arms. Together you sat there on the bathroom floor for an hour, hugging and holding each other.
That night you slept in their room and for the first time in forever you felt like you could survive what's to come. You felt like you had a strong, fighting chance for happiness. And most of all you didn't feel alone anymore because you weren't.
You had your moms, and they were going to do everything they can to be there for you and to help you.

I’ve probably got the biggest crush on Emily Prentiss. She’s brave, bad-ass, and really cares about helping people and stopping serial killers. Also, that grey hair—damn!
Needed to get that off my chest. 😂
Also, I have bit of a dilemma. I turned down a job in the council as it was part time, temporarily and not chance of career progression- even though I have skillset and experience for it. And I already work there in a similar role, which is also temporary.
However, my team is about to advertise a role which is full-time and very probable chance of getting an permanent position- according to my manager. I also know the work better, enjoy the work, and I know they’re fighting to keep me on regardless of the new job advertisement.
I feel bad for turning it down but I can’t afford to live on part time hours. I know I could get a 2nd job but I really don’t want a 2nd job. Ugh, they’re so lovely and it seems like such a good role but I just can’t.
Should I feel bad for turning it down? I feel like I wasted their time applying for it but I thought it would still be an good idea to apply for it, and at the time I wasn’t 100% sure what was going on with my team.
Sorry for the rant, needed to get that bit also off my chest. 😅 Also Emily’s cool and I don’t think she would have that issue in the BAU, as she would probably stay there. I would too, if I worked there.

Hi. How is everyone’s weekend been? 😊
I kind of need to get something off my chest and I thought I’d do it on here, apologies for the long rant. I’m 25 years old, working full time and enjoying my job, and saving for a mortgage. Hoping this time next year I’ll have enough saved. But I’m hoping to adopt when I do get my own place, and I really want a big family.
I’m single though, which I know doesn’t matter if I want to adopt kids. I feel like I should have a partner to do this with but I haven’t met anyone yet and I’m starting to doubt if I ever will. I do want to meet a woman though.
Online dating is awful and I’m not into the clubbing scheme. I do go to the gym, go on hiking groups, and I’m about to join a boxing club, so who knows? But I can’t for the life of me tell if a woman is flirting with me or interested, so I’m not feeling very hopeful here.
Again, sorry for the long rant. Needed to get this off my chest. 😅

Help
Jennifer Jareau x daughter character
Emily Prentiss x original character (platonic)
Warnings: self-harm, depression, suicidal thoughts
Tumblr media
Everyday it felt like her mind was against her, where it would repeat her dark thoughts about how useless and undeserving she was, how everyone would be better off if she wasn’t around.
The only time she was able to get away from the thoughts and her own emotions was when she bought a knife to her own wrists. That sensation felt good, addictive, and also shameful.
Kate was at school and after a boring English lesson, she was hiding out in the girl’s bathroom in a stall. She was clutching her head, tears glistening in her eyes, as she trembled. With desperation, Kate slipped out her pocket knife and carefully held it to her wrist, and forcefully pressed down.
She watched with curiosity and sick relief as droplets of blood trailed down her wrist. Something tight and heavy in chest eased slightly, before it quickly came back. Realising the time, Kate inwardly swore and quickly placed plasters over her arm.
When leaving the bathroom stall, Kate met her own lifeless eyes in the mirror. It took the breath right out of her chest as she stared at herself, at how sad her eyes were, gaunt cheeks, and unhealthy pale skin. For the first time in forever she wanted something, something more than this. She didn’t want to feel like this anymore- dreading waking up each day and wanting to die, anticipating each and every cut. Surely there was more to life than this.
Instead of going to her next class, which was science, Kate snuck out of school. She took the bus to the BAU, knowing that her mom and the team were catching-up on paperwork today. After collecting a visitor’s pass, Kate went up to her mom’s floor.
She came across Unit Chief Emily Prentiss, who instantly spotted the teenager when she entered. Emily could tell something was wrong with Kate and quickly approached the girl.
“Hey Kate, is everything alright? Shouldn’t you be at school?” Emily asked worriedly. “Your mom is in a meeting but she won’t be much longer.
Tears appeared in Kate’s eyes. “I…uh…yeah.”
Emily wrapped an arm around Kate’s shoulder, leading the seventeen-year old to her office. Once she had closed her blinds and shut her door, Emily gently helped Kate to sit on her office sofa. Emily quickly pinged a quick message to JJ.
Emily sat next to Kate, wrapping her into a hug. Emily saw Kate like a daughter, which made sense since Kate was her goddaughter, and the thought of her being in pain made Emily sad and worried.
“What’s going on sweetheart?” Emily asked softly. “You can tell me absolutely anything.”
Kate quietly sobbed into her hand, struggling to get the words out. Heaving out with frustration, she tugged her sleeves down - revealing both her wrists that had old scars and fresh cuts on it. However, that was when JJ entered the room and she gasped - hand flying to her chest. She quickly schooled her expression, not wanting to make her daughter even more upset.
JJ rushed to her daughter’s side, wrapping one arm around Kate’s shoulder and the other hand gently holding Kate’s wrists. JJ gently kissed Kate’s forehead, sharing teary looks with Emily.
“I’m so…so sorry,” Kate gasped out, clinging tightly onto her mother. “I’m feeling too much all the damn time, and it hurts!”
“Shh…” JJ said reassuringly, rocking her daughter side-to-side softly. “It’s going to be okay, we’re not going anywhere. We got you.”
“We promise,” Emily added, tone just as soft. “We love you Kate, and we’re going to help you.”
JJ and Emily shared looks again, silently communicating with each other. They both agreed that they would do anything to help Kate, that she wasn’t going to be alone anymore and that from this day forward they were going to be there for her.

Coming Out - The Fosters
Stef Foster x daughter character
Lena Adams-Fosters x daughter character
Warnings: None that I can think of
Tumblr media
After a long day at school, Kate was happy to be with her family for dinner. There was boring lessons and typical high school drama, which mainly consisted of gossip and boys asking her out. Recently, it was Jack, a boy in her year who was popular but also friendly and very kind.
Maybe if she was straight, Kate would have said yes but she couldn’t. She wasn’t attracted to him and she also wasn’t the type to string people along either.
“So, I heard Jack asked you out,” Mariana said excitedly.
Kate rolled her eyes at Callie, who smirked back sympathetically at her older sister. Jude and Jesus were thankfully too busy discussing their latest computer game, whilst Brandon looked up abruptly from his plate with a frown. Stef and Lena shared looks as they listened to the discussion, both of them were prepared to cut in if necessary.
“Wait? What?” Brandon asked loudly.
“I said no,” Kate said tensely, sighing and giving her twin brother a look as if to say ‘stop it’. Mariana bought something like this up almost every week and it was tiring.
“Why?” Mariana yelled in disbelief. “He’s cute and really nice!”
“You date him then,” Kate snapped, irritation lacing her voice. “He’s not my type.”
Mariana rolled her eyes, stabbing her fork into the lasagna on her plate. “You say that about every boy. Do you actually have a type or is something wrong with you?”
“Mariana!” Stef and Lena said, giving their daughter a look. It was too late though, Kate slammed her cutlery down with a cold expression on her face and stormed out of the room.
“That’s enough Mariana,” Stef said sternly. “If Kate doesn’t want to date then she doesn’t have to. There is nothing wrong with that.”
“But…”
“Mariana,” Lena warned, giving her daughter a look. “We’re going to talk with Kate. You’ll and Jesus will be cleaning up tonight.”
Stef and Lena ignored their complaints as they left the kitchen table and went up to Kate’s room. When they opened the door, they saw Kate siting on her window sill with a thick woolly green blanket wrapped around her shoulders. There were tear marks down Kate’s cheeks, which she rubbed at, eyes gleaming with confusion and sadness.
Stef and Lena shared small frowns before approaching their daughter. Stef sat opposite her, whilst Lena stood beside Kate and gently wrapped an arm around Kate.
“Don’t mind Mariana Kate, there’s nothing wrong with you for not dating,” Lena said softly, kissing her daughter on the forehead.
“Means we don’t have to worry about any boys,” Stef added jokingly, making Kate smile slightly.
“I know, it’s just…” Kate stopped, glaring tensely out of the window as she bit her lip. She dug her nails into her hand to stop herself crying. “I’m not…I don’t want to date boys.”
“That’s alright sweets, you don’t have to date any boys if you don’t want to,” Stef said, gently grabbing her daughter’s hands. She gave her a loving smile.
“That’s not what I meant,” Kate gritted out. She swallowed nervously, meeting her mom’s furrowed eyes. “I do like someone. It’s Carina, I like Carina.” She nervously bit at her thumb, looking away from her mom’s curious and concerned gaze. “I’m a lesbian.”
Stef and Lena shared smiles, both of them wrapping their arms around their daughter into their favourite ‘Mama sandwich’ hug. Stef placed kisses all over Kate’s face. “Love, that is okay, you know?”
“We love you regardless of who you like,” Lena added gently. “We just want you to be happy.”
“We’d be hypocrites, if we didn’t,” Stef said with a smirk.
“I know it’s stupid to be scared of telling you, I just…” Kate stopped, unsure how to finish it. “I was scared.”
“I know love. I was too when I figured my sexuality out,” Stef said understandingly. “We’re here for you, you’re not alone.” She playfully smirked at her daughter. “We also want to meet this Carina.”
“Absolutely not,” Kate said, giving her mom’s a look. “I haven’t even asked her out yet, and besides I don’t want to scare her off.”
“If you want any tips on getting a girl, I can give you some good ones,” Stef offered teasingly, smirk growing at the red spreading across Kate’s cheeks. “It’s how I got Lena.”
Lena snorted, rolling her eyes fondly at her wife. “That’s not how I remembered it Stef.” She gently grabbed her daughter’s face, lifting it up to face her. “I love you Kate. We love you.”
“I love you both too,” Kate said, snuggling into Lena. She had a small smile on her face as she held both her moms tightly.
Coming Out was always scary and unpredictable but there was always people out there that would support and love her regardless. Kate was so grateful for them and she knew she would be alright in the long run. Maybe one day in the future she wouldn’t have to come out continuously to people and that love was love, regardless of gender but with her family she knew she was going to be fine and that they had her back.

Caught - The Fosters
Stef Foster x daughter character
Lena Adams-Foster x daughter character
No warnings I can think of.
Kate and her girlfriend, Maya Bishop, snuck up to her bedroom - not that they needed to as everyone was out. Her and Maya shared smiles and giggles as they shut the bedroom door behind them.
Kate pushed Maya against the nearest wall, desperately kissing the former Olympian. She groaned as she felt Maya's hands run down her body, resting on her waist. Kate slipped a knee between Maya's knees, grinding herself against Maya's thigh with a moan.
Maya smirked as she kissed Kate back, lips trailing down her cheek and biting marks on her neck. Eventually she bought them back up to Kate's lips and kissed her, tongue slipping into her mouth. Kate grind herself harder against Maya, groaning against Maya's lips as pleasure wracked throughout her body.
Meanwhile, downstairs, Stef and Lena had just got back after a dinner out together. They decided to head upstairs to change into comfier clothing. When going past Kate's room, they heard a thud and the couple shared worried looks.
"Kate?" Lena asked softly. She was about to knock on Kate's bedroom door when Stef, impatient as usual, pushed open the door. The two older woman gasped back in surprise as their eyes landed on their daughter wrapped around Maya Bishop, both had thought they were really close friends. And Maya Bishop had her top off with some noticeable bruises on her neck.
"Moms!" Kate gasped, jumping away from Maya. She quickly threw a jumper at her girlfriend, who pulled it on with an amused and slightly embarrassed smile. "What are you doing here?"
"What are we doing here?" Stef snorted, giving her daughter an exasperated look. "What are you doing?"
"Seriously?" Kate rolled her eyes, blush staining her pale cheeks. "What does it look like?"
Stef was about to argue back when Lena gave her a look, before turning to the two younger girls with a soft smile. "How about we all calm down and go downstairs to talk about this?"
"Wait a minute!" Stef said, eyes widening and looking as she was about to be sick. "Maya's been coming over to sleep here for weeks now, have you been..." She paused, looking paler than usual.
Kate and Maya shared sheepish smiles.
“Kate Foster!” Stef yelled. She was about to continue when Lena grabbed her arm and gave her a look. Stef’s face stiffened. “Downstairs. Now!”
Kate and her girlfriend, Maya, followed Stef and Lena downstairs to the kitchen. Lena made everyone drinks as they sat at the kitchen table.
“How long has this been going on?” Lena asked, finally breaking the awkward silence that had fallen over the group. She had noticed the glares her wife was sending Kate’s girlfriend, and how uncomfortable Kate was starting to look.
Kate swallowed nervously, picking up her finger nails. Maya grabbed her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. She smiled reassuringly at her Kate, warmth and love gleaming in her eyes, which Stef and Lena caught.
Both of them smiled at how Maya was looking so lovingly towards their daughter, and it made them very happy she has someone that truly cared and loved about her. Stef wasn’t thrilled that her daughter was dating someone but at least it was Maya and not some hormonal teenager boy.
“It’s only been a couple of weeks,” Kate admitted quietly, meeting her moms’ eyes. “I’ve loved her since I was fourteen though.”
“You have loved me for three years?” Maya said with a happy smile. She let out a laugh. “I’ve loved you since I was fourteen too.”
Stef sighed. A part of her felt hurt that Kate hadn’t confided in them about Maya, but she also understood. Coming out was scary, Stef knew that better than most people. “We’re happy for you both but the same rules applies about keeping doors open as it does for your siblings, understand?” She gave them a stern look. “I also don’t want to see any of that again.”
“That seems fair,” Kate agreed with a laugh. She gave Maya a small smile. “If you set up for homework, I’ll be up there in a second.”
Maya kissed Kate on the cheek before going back to Kate’s room to set up their laptops and books. Kate turned to her moms and pulled them into tight hugs. “Thank you Mom and Mama.”
“That’s alright sweets, make sure to put some cream on your neck,” Lena said teasingly. She laughed when Kate playfully pushed her with a pout. When Kate left to join Maya back upstairs, Lena turned to her wife with a sad smile.
“She’s growing up,” Lena said mournfully, looking really proud.
Stef groaned, a similar expression on her face, as she wrapped her arms around her wife. “I know, and I know it’s good but I hate it. She’s my baby girl.”
“At least it’s Maya. She’s a lovely girl,” Lena said with a smile, laughing when Stef nodded reluctantly. Lena gave her a look when Stef straightened up with a glint in her eyes. “And no threatening her with your gun either babe.”
Whilst it was going to take getting some use to with their daughter dating, they knew she was going to be fine. She had Maya, and they saw how much Maya already loved their daughter. And Kate was happy, which was all that mattered to Stef and Lena.

Skipping School - The Fosters
Stef Foster x daughter character
Warnings: panic attacks, hints of depression.
(Hope this okay. It’s my first Foster one-shot, so please do bear with me. I also haven’t watched all the Foster seasons yet, so my one-shots aren’t exactly following it all)
When Kate split off from Mariana, Jesus, Jude, Brandon and Callie, she walked down the corridor towards English Literature. Instead of entering it like she was supposed to, she went straight past it and snuck out of the school. She knew her mothers were going to be furious with her later but Kate didn't care. She desperately needed to get away, and breathe.
She made her way to the beach, finding an isolated part of the beach. Slipping off her faux blue leather jacket and laying it out on the sand, Kate sat on it with a sigh.
She wrapped her arms around her knees, body trembling. Most people would think it was from the cool breeze, but it was from the anxiety that has been building up for days. There would be weeks where the oldest Foster sister would be completely fine and she would feel normal, but other weeks where each day she was drowning in anxiety, sadness and fear until it bubbled up and exploded.
That was what was happening to her now.
Trembles and quiet sobs wracking throughout her body. Stomach clenching and churning painfully. Her chest was tight, heart hammering away violently as if it was trying to leap out of her ribcage, and Kate felt like she was being suffocated. She desperately heaved breaths in, trying to get some air in but when that didn't work; her panic grew.
Clutching at her Nirvana top, rubbing her chest through the soft material, tears flooded down her cheeks. She sobbed and gasped into her other hand, gently rocking herself back and forth.
Kate could feel her phone vibrating frantically in her pocket, and she knew it was Mama and Mom trying to get hold of her. Pulling the phone out, blinking away the fuzzy vision, she grimaced at the time displaying across the screen and the thirty missed calls and texts between the two of them.
It was lunch time, and she has missed both English and PE - not that she minded as she didn't like those lessons much. She knew her parents would though, and that they would ground her for a good few weeks or so.
Kate switched it off when she saw her mom ringing her again. She knew that her mom would be tracking her phone shortly, but Kate couldn't bring herself to care. They were always mad at her these days anyway.
Tears bubbled up in her eyes again, trailing down her pale cheeks. She didn't understand what was wrong with her, and why she was so anxious and scared all the time. She has always been like this, although she hid it very well as a cocky and disobedient teenager - the opposite of her 'perfect' twin brother Brandon.
Time seemed to fly quickly, even though it was a good thirty minutes, as her mom sat next to her. Stef Foster, a woman in her forties, with short blonde hair and blue eyes, had a police uniform on which meant she left work to find Kate. Kate knew that meant her mom would be even more furious.
Stef opened her mouth to tell her off, when her eyes met Kate's pained tearful eyes and stained cheeks, and she closed it. Stef wrapped her arms around Kate, pulling the girl tightly against her chest.
"Why aren't you in school, love?" Stef asked softly. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing!" Kate snapped, cheeks blushing in embarrassment. She tried to pull away, even though she didn't want to, but Stef didn't let her. If anything, Stef held her tighter. "I just didn't fancy school today."
Stef pulled back slightly, grasping Kate's cheek and making her daughter look at her. She gently rubbed Kate's cheeks. "Attitude love."
The older woman gave her a look. "The real reason love, and don't lie as you're on thin ice today."
Kate felt the anxiety twisting in her chest again, and she felt like she couldn't breathe for what felt like the third time today. Grasping at her chest, gasps left her lips as tears formed in her eyes.
"Can't... can't breathe!" Kate stammered through her gasps, tears streaming down her cheeks as she sobbed. She tried to pull away from her mom when Stef pulled her against her chest again.
"Love, I need you to focus on me, alright?" Stef said, concern on her face. "Tell me five things you can see."
"You, your uniform, the sand, the sea and my jacket," Kate said, trying to focus on her breathing.
"Good job, love," Stef said, placing a soft kiss on Kate's forehead. "Now four things you hear."
"Your voice, your heart, the waves and the seagulls," Kate said quietly, clutching desperately at her mom.
"That's it," Stef encouraged softly. "Three things you feel."
"Your uniform, the sand, and the wind on my cheeks," Kate said, her breaths slowly starting to become easier.
"Nice Kate-bug. Two things you smell," Stef continued, rubbing Kate's back up and down gently. Once she has calmed her daughter, she was going to take her home and they were going to have a serious discussion about this with Lena. Stef had the feeling this wasn't the first time Kate had a panic attack, and unfortunately probably wouldn't be the last time either.
"You and the beach," Kate said, finally feeling calm.
Stef laughed, making Kate smile. "Are you saying I smell?" She playfully poked Kate in the side, making the younger Foster gasp and giggle. "And what do you taste?"
"Fear." Kate said, tears glistening in her eyes as she avoided her mother's gaze, instead tucking her head against her chest. Quiet tears fell down her cheeks and she felt a stab of guilt at getting her mother’s work uniform a bit wet.
Stef simply held her tighter, placing a soft kiss on her daughter’s forehead. “You’re not alone. I love you and I’m not going anywhere, I promise.”
After about twenty minutes of clinging onto each other, Stef pulled back slightly with a gentle look. “I think we need to go home and talk with Mama about this.”
Kate pulled away slightly, turning her gaze back to the ocean. A gentle sigh left her, tears gleaming in her eyes.
"I'm sorry Mom, I needed to get away," Kate said quietly, sniffling. "Sometimes I feel like I can't breathe."
"I get like that too," Stef admitted awkwardly. She hated showing weaknesses to her family but she had a feeling she had to here. Stef smiled when her daughter looked at her with surprise.
"You know what I do when I get like that?" Stef asked her. "I speak to your Mama and she helps me. I want you to speak to us when you ever feel like that." She slipped an arm around Kate's waist, helping her daughter onto her feet. "Now let's go home, we can figure this out together."
When the mother and daughter arrived home, Lena was waiting for them in the kitchen. The other children were out at sleepovers or probably up to mischief. As soon as Lena saw them, she pulled Kate into a tight hug - placing kisses all over her face and making the teenager laugh.
“I love you Kate,” Lena said, tears in her eyes as she shared looks with her wife. “If you ever feel like that again, no matter what time or day it is, talk to us.”
“I’ll try Mama.”
Kate clung tighter to her and for the first time in what felt like forever, her chest and heart felt light. And she felt like maybe she was going to be okay, as she had them.
