as an atheist, I don’t usually do the whole “pray for [country]” thing when something bad happens there. i don’t think it accomplishes anything. but now that there’s a pattern of these hashtags trending for “white” areas that are affected and far less so for “brown” areas, it’s political.

media outlets and social media in the US don’t do a great job of making it seem like these disasters matter when they don’t affect the US or Europe. they do. the people’s whose lives in Oaxaca and Chiapas have just been flipped upside down, they matter.

so if you can, donate something to a local group there to help out, talk about what is happening to these communities and why so few (white) people here seem to give a damn, and yeah, why not, #PrayforMexico.

Perdóname por no haber hecho justicia a todas tus tradiciones, a tu cultura y a tantas cosas que tienes; sé que mis lágrimas y mi angustia no ayudarán. Pero solo quiero decirte que lo siento, porque tal vez no nos podamos recuperar tan pronto, pero te prometo que lucharé por ti.
