I think I'm finally almost willing to dive back into 9-1-1 again.
The funny thing about dipping into a different fandom with a very toxic element was that it made me realise:
a.) this fandom makes that fandom look tame, and
b.) that fandom makes the 9-1-1 fandom look slightly less horrifying because what's controversy over there is Tuesday over here.
It somehow balances itself out.
Like the other fandom just had a fan journo publish a pretty professional opinion piece in a news outlet which touched on a ship they like and somehow that's cause for controversy? It certainly got the x-bird platform all excited.
That happens every single day in the 9-1-1 fandom and WAY more blatantly and problematically. Yet from some of the reactions over in the other fandom you'd think the author in question had shot someone in the face.
Those poor naive fools. They haven't even seen the full scope of the toxicity and horror that fandom can be.
Some of that fandom think a canon ship is toxic? They have no idea what a canon ship over on 9-1-1 has had to endure, and how toxic a non-canon ship can be.
#911 discourse#911 abc#I feel like if I can survive 9-1-1 I can survive anything#and if that other fandom is getting this worked up over nothing#then maybe 9-1-1 isn't so bad after all

Holy fuck.
You know the other show/fandom you're watching has really fucked up when you consider coming back to this dumpster fire of a show.
Like this fandom is the ninth circle of Hell. But right now I'd rather be here than dealing with the bullshit drama of that stupid soap.
#911 abc#911 negativity#911 critical#not naming it because it's well and truly fucked me off right now

what do you see when you look down? we just keep getting drunker and drunker. we have sex with a different guy every night to distract ourselves from how bored and unhappy we are but we can’t even see how bored and unhappy we are. we’ve just accepted a new standard of dissatisfaction. we lose ourselves. by drinking too much. by doing too many drugs, by having too much sex. [eastsiders 2012-2019]
#just got to this part in my rewatch#this show has some fantastically written lines#but this scene is by far the best#they are falling into an Abyss#and they can't find their way out

I wanted to write this on the off chance it makes certain people reconsider their harassment of LFJ, particularly the people who are tagging him in comments about his family.
This month the Ferrigno children had to testify in court against their own father, on behalf of their incapacitated mother. Their mother had to take out a DV restraining order against their father in the early days of her dementia diagnosis. Their father has totally cut her off financially, leaving her kids to fully support the round the clock in-home care she needs.
I also wanted to share that Mama Ferrigno is a badass. She was assaulted by Bill Cosby and came out publicly to support survivors in a video. She defended her children from her abusive husband for years. What's happening to her now is appalling and she, and her children, deserve better. And that includes not having randos on the internet saying awful shit about her and tagging her son in it because of a TV show.
The entire situation is fucking horrible and I don't talk about it because we shouldn't need to bring up people's personal lives to try and stop harassment, people should just be kind. But it is good to remind others that even though it's "just the internet" you don't know what someone might be going through at any given moment.
We need to stop sending threats and off the wall accusations to people we know nothing about. It's one thing to comment about a blatant homophobic or racist take, but it's completely unacceptable to just @ someone randomly on a Tuesday and tell them to go kill themselves.
And I appreciate you, Annie for typing this all up for people to read and maybe change but I'm afraid that the handful of people we're still dealing with are too immature and hateful to give a shit about anyone other than themselves.

I'll also say this and then shut up.
That Luke and Noah waited over a year to have sex is absolutely ridiculous. Especially when Noah had been having regular sex with Maddie when they were together.
And there's no fucking way anyone can convince me that Luke and Reid were celibate during their months-long relationship.
When Luke was like "my biggest regret is we never made love" my eyes almost rolled out of my head. That was just fucking stupid. Who was writing this shit?
What kind of world did they think they lived in during the 2010s? Some Puritan fantasy from the 19th century?
Insanity.

The thing with the Nuke vs. LuRe competition is that I find it a bit silly. They are both great relationships but they really don't belong in the same show. Or at least, not in the way it was done. They destroyed one great relationship to create another, which... is a choice.
But then they couldn't even stick to that and so obliterated the one they'd just created to try and bring back the second.
And then couldn't even get that right.
It just feels so miserable for everyone. Luke heartbroken and grief-stricken, Noah heartbroken and alone, and Reid dead.
What I hate is when stories take completely random left-turns because the writers changed their minds or started writing for other reasons than what's rooted in character/the story so far.
And you can kind of see what they might have been aiming for with breaking up Nuke and putting Luke with Reid but it was just executed in a way that felt so abrupt. At least, in my opinion. If the goal was to contrast youth's first love with a more mature, grounded relationship, I really don't think they pulled it off.
I think LuRe is actually really interesting but they needed way more time to give that story what it deserved and to bring proper closure to Nuke if that's what they wanted to do.
Instead, it felt like they were trying to play all angles and ended up accomplishing literally nothing. The only salvageable thing is that I buy Luke was in love with Reid and that he was completely grief-stricken after Reid died, but also I love the doubt he started expressing afterward.
I think that's at least relatively self-aware of the writing to acknowledge that they had heated up this relationship so fast but that Luke and Reid didn't really know each other all that well or for that long and hadn't even hit milestones that people might consider "normal".
Which would have made Luke's exploration of those feelings kind of interesting except of course the show ended. If the plan had been to kill off Reid all along, they really should have done it earlier.
It's just bafflingly bad choices. Don't break up Nuke so stupidly. Definitely don't kill Reid in the last few weeks and give Luke like two episodes to process it. Frankly, don't kill him off at all.
So stupid.
#as the world turns#luke snyder#noah mayer#because was his love for Reid feels genuine#but the foundations of their relationship are a bit unclear#so did he fall really hard as a kind of rebound?#or because he saw something in Reid he really loved?#it's interesting#I do think they wrote in that uncertainty to allow the audience to imagine a Nuke reunion in the future#but that's definitely a sign that they were doing a bit of a 180 and trying to give everyone a little something#such that everyone ended up with nothing

I never watched this when it was on. Obviously American soaps have a bit of a reputation (hello demonic possession...) but I remember seeing segments of Nuke years ago and have recently rediscovered the story.
It's honestly quite beautiful once you get past the initial weirdness of Maddie and Ameera and the bizarre plot lines (like those twins who weren't twins). It's a bit sad that the Colonel was probably the best storyline they had (which explains why they revisited that well multiple times) but the homophobia is just painful.
That said, the to-and-fro of Nuke honestly seems kind of tame to me compared to modern soaps. And I'm one of those people who thinks that Jake and Van Hansis had fantastic chemistry, though perhaps more so later on (I can agree that in their earlier stories, Jake might have come off a bit stiff).
I should say that I'm by no means against LuRe as I think Reid was a very interesting character. Well written, brilliantly portrayed and with good sparks with Van Hansis off the bat.
I will admit though that it feels a bit like a different show when he turns up and as nice as I think he and Luke are together, I couldn't quite see them walking off into the sunset holding hands. It's just really... random, I guess. Like the story went in a completely different direction. But I really enjoyed what they had.
Which brings me to my point: what the hell happened in that last year of the show? Because Reid didn't need to die.
And I read all about the blatant character assassination of Damian after he seemed to have turned a leaf, how Holden and Lily were torn apart, how Luke disowned Damian and the Grimaldi name, how Nuke got nuked to make way for LuRe, only to cap it off with Reid dying and Nuke not even getting a happy ending out of any of it.
Like what the actual hell? Was the intent to just obliterate every single relationship and positive thing about the show in that last year?
That really doesn't seem like a good way to write a finale for a decades-old show. Were the writers bitter? Burned out? Like I can only imagine the fury from fans at the time. It must have been apocalyptic.
Maybe I'm missing something because I was jumping around the episodes a lot, but why didn't they just take that last year to chill? I get putting newer actors in because they were likely cutting costs so that's understandable, but they really didn't need to go full scorched earth on everything else.
Like I wouldn't have split Nuke up at all but if it had to be done I definitely wouldn't have killed Reid. I would have just had them break up after a while. And if that wasn't in the cards then give Noah more screentime and another love interest because he did not deserve to be sidelined.
Frankly, I would have just given Nuke a bit of relationship trouble with Reid showing Luke a different kind of relationship and then get them back together for a wedding story. Would that have been that insane for 2010? ABC did the Kevin-Scotty wedding in 2008. Surely Nuke could have got married (or had a commitment ceremony, whatever) and headed to LA together.
I'm just shaking my head because it's all so puzzling.
#as the world turns#Luke Snyder#Noah Mayer#Big kudos to Van Hansis for Luke though#and Silbermann for Noah (I don't get the criticism as I think he did great)#So good to see Van Hansis in the role that put him on the map#I first saw him in Eastsiders and I knew that he had done other work before#but seeing him in that role now I can say he's quite good
