He gets upset at the Justice Gang for brutally killing a rampaging Kaiju and not even attempting to find a way to move it or at least euthanize it more humanely.

The only time he raises his voice during Lois’ interview is when she digs into his interference in geopolitics, because people would have died if he hadn’t acted. The only time he yells at Luthor is when Luthor abducts Krypto. The only time he cries is when Luthor murders someone he barely even knew.

some maps for my comic i made a couple years ago and decided to touch up a bit! focusing on the places mentioned within the story, and a map of the main town the story takes place in, sylvain! some info and brainstorming under the cut:

the story takes place in a smallish country, which is more or less covered in rolling hills, with swathes of deciduous/evergreen forest. the mountains are covered in snow nearly year round, and likewise, the country is fairly cool all year. winters can be bitter in the north, milder in the south but snow is still common. summers are humid but generally not too hot.

the capital is called new haliente! it's a very beautiful city, lots of big glass-looking buildings and a bridge over the river leading out to the ocean. the nation's tallest mountain can be seen from most points in the city. the next biggest city, san leo, is on the eastern border of the country. it probably wont get featured in The black birds, but it's the setting of a couple of my other comics 👀👀

there are several towns, the most notable one apart from sylvain being echo bluff. probably closer to a small city than a town, it's a hub for commerce and recreation. inspired by some parts of places like salt lake city, philadelphia, auckland. its also situated inland from its namesake, a huuuuge cliff. i took inspo from the great australian bight cliffs and faroe islands for this.

sylvain is a slight melting pot of inspiration - the commercial center is a more modern-looking district. it's still a town, though, there aren't many super tall buildings aside from apartment blocks. the further out of the commercial district you go, into the residential areas, the more it starts to resemble european townhouses/terraced houses. the lake sylvain is settled around is surrounded by park areas, but theres a small lakefront area with cafes, restaurants etc.

i took a lot of inspiration for sylvain's design and architecture from the area i lived in in england. also areas of a similar/colder climate such as montreal, vancouver, chicago, new york, some parts of aotearoa.

sam and cal's farm home is directly inspired by my birthplace, dorset c: similarly, crescent is inspired by cornwall (which i miss, every day of my life. good GOD.) basically an english seaside town/village. sprinklings of australian coastal influences too.

travelling from her merfolk colony home to sylvain takes skiye the better part of a day if she swims at a normal pace to crescent. driving from crescent to sylvain takes about 20-30 mins

skiye obviously grew up in her colony, but moved straight to sylvain after meeting sam. sam was born in sylvain, tho she lived in olerra awhile before returning a bit later. cal has lived in sylvain his whole life. nick is from new haliente - he spent his childhood in his birth city, briefly lived in echo bluff as a teen, before he moved to sylvain.

the country is unnamed so far, the working name was wyvera, but I'll probably change this eventually

some names are subject to change also, mostly the oceans, mountains etc. but im also. a bit lazy lmao so they're just as likely to stick
