Scott McCloud Comic Art Talk
Review by Precious Salazar
The Comic Art Festival started today and Kendal College students were given the chance to attend a very awe-inspiring talk by the renowned cartoonist Scott McCloud from America.
He made books about constructing narrative structure for comics. The titles of his books are Understanding Comics, Reinventing Comics, and Making Comics.
The talk was very intimate, he was very open about his work. Talking about a variety of things from how he started his career, to making comics, to writing, drawing them and such.
We learnt how comics are visual literature which allows you to take staccato moments in your life and deliver and communicate them to an audience through art. That there is a biodiversity of comics and can take anything or do it anyway. It doesn't matter what type of medium you use, either verbally, written or drawn as long as you communicate your ideas effectively, that is what you should aim for. It doesn't matter if you draw stick figures or your writing is squiggly. It doesn’t matter!
As we live in a modern world, where children are taught to follow rules and not make mistakes. Scott said that it is alright to make mistakes because that is how you learn in life. You make mistakes and that’s what makes you grow.
We all enjoyed his openness to the way he answered the questions, giving his personal advice from his own experiences, telling us to “Be open, follow no one, follow pattern and work like hell.”

Work found in the "One Year On" show. Excellent examples of craftsmanship, making use of traditional materials and production processes. Must experiment with casting, seems to be a lot of interest in the industrial look created by this process.

Congratulations to Georgia Rose Garside who has been offered a place at the University of Central Lancashire to study a BaHons in Fashion Promotion & Styling.
For the interview Georgia was asked to create an invite for a fashion show of her choice. She worked hard to develop the design above for Elie Saab, taking and editing her own image, creating an envelop with a lace print detail and using embossing inks to add the information to the invite.
The BaHons Fashion Promotion & Styling is Georgia's first choice and she is looking forward to starting university after completing the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & design.
