anakin and padme’s romance pulls from opera and classic tragedy so heavily, like i wouldn’t call their story new by any means, which is why it’s maddening when people feel the need to flatten anakin’s physical abuse even further. it’s a moment of rage that is his lowest point and happens in the depth of hell! the story firmly lays out how bad it is and how to feel about it! and yet for decades people have gone in circles stressing about how the relationship should’ve been abusive from the start, actually, or it WAS but people deny it, or THIS abuse is in character but not this and victimhood really should look like THIS and so on, when again, if you just read any older romance classic or get a little bit into gothic fiction, it becomes very clear what’s happening and what they were going for

I love Luke so much. He always sees the good in someone but not in a way that's naive. He says 'you always have the choice to choose goodness, no matter what you've done.' He looks at his father, the man who killed millions and tortured his friends and cut off his arm and said "there is good in you." He looks at Mara, the woman who has made it so clear she wants to kill him and says "you have a choice to make, and you don't have to choose the path you feel trapped in." I just. So often modern redemption stories are someone saying 'the bad stuff you did doesn't actually matter'. But Luke never says that. He never says "you're not actually bad, so stop pretending to be." He acknowledges the evil people have done but he still /gives them a chance/. He still presents them a choice. And being offered that choice saves Vader. And i haven't finished the book yet but it saves Mara as well I'm pretty sure. Because saying 'you're a good person' isn't true, but saying "there's good in you and you can always make that choice, no matter what you have done" changes lives

Anakin watched his mother appreciatively. Her lank, dark hair was beginning to gray, and her once graceful movements had slowed. But he thought she was beautiful and brave. He thought she was perfect.

no one can be normal about this ever but anakin does objectify padme & act possessive towards her, he does idolize her, he does put her in the place of his mother, he does exhibit all these behaviors and also form a deep connection with her that is incredibly personally fulfilling for both of them. it’s not either/or and in fact it’s a key part of their dynamic. his first line to her is “are you an angel?” and then he spends ten years meditating on her, dreaming of her—that is deification, that is putting her on a pedastal. she in turn sees him as this token from an old era of her life, she keeps his good luck charm for all of those ten years and carries that memory of his innocence. there’s always this tension between the real world and their own special secret world, the adult duties they have and the arrested development of their childhood traumas, whether they can run away together, whether these visions anakin has of the people he’s not supposed to love are real, all this fog. & to combat this, they carve out a little hole in the galaxy that’s only theirs. it’s idealism. they both represent to the other something real and freeing and scary and transgressive. and that does play into the violence, the mega stakes of what it means for anakin to think padme has sold him out. that’s not an excuse and that’s not me saying they’re a straightforwardly abusive relationship, but they are a deep bond formed amidst serious turmoil. and palpatine preys on that. he ferments that shit. & it’s unfortunate because 9 times out of 10 you can’t get past the “well are they abusive/toxic or not” thing & people expressing general performative disgust at a fictional dynamic being less than a platonic ideal . when this is melodrama

say what you will about attachment and the jedi and how wrong or right it is (i'm not here to discuss that) but at the end of the day the prophecy wasn't fulfilled through non attachment. and luke doing things differently than the previous jedi is a pretty big deal for the story. what destroyed the emperor was the very same parent-child bond the order was disencouraging and that luke would have been barred from having had he been born during the republic.
#unfortunately op you forgot that since the jedi are the good guys they have to be morally good and correct about everything#so there is a secret definition to the word attachment that you are not seeing. sorry yeah#star wars#sw meta

attempt at an anakin relationship chart. i couldn't fit shmi or qui-gon or leia or ahsoka on there but maybe another time
#much to think about#my favourite part is obi wan not being in “knowing his real self” bc its so true#despite obi wan knowing and loving him anakin hid so much stuff from obi wan#his fears and his marriage being the most relevant and what ends up blowing up in everyone's faces#obi wan knows anakin has insecurities some times but he doesn't know they drag him down so much he's on the edge of the dark side#he doesn't know how he's always afraid#brave of op to out “parental replacement” with padme ngl#probably the only one i dont necessarily agree with but i could hear the argument#star wars#sw meta#anakin skywalker#obi wan kenobi#luke skywalker#sheev palpatine

so, i do think people mimimize anakin’s actions sometimes, like i don’t care for anyone who litigates the genocides, who tries to soften the blow of him choking padme, or who seriously straight up refuses to believe he’s a villain. & i’ve seen all of that. but also, 99% of the time i see a post hyperventilating over “anakin defenders”, the op in question just means like, someone saying slavery is bad. or fans of a series being interested in & compelled by the main character. you see the issue
#you gotta be weird about him the right way#free my guy from therapy speak he did it all and it was terrible cruel and evil and most importantly entertaining (he isnt a real person)#star wars#anakin skywalker

i get why padme/palpatine parallelism stuff is not as popular but imo it is crucial to understanding anakin to know he sees them similarly. it's part of why he trusts palpatine with padme's life so unquestioningly
