Like I absolutely hate myself right now. I'm a 300lb 6ft tall woman who can deadlift almost 400lbs and bench 220lbs and run a mile in 8min. I have a loving family and good friends and I make a difference in the lives of the people I work with. I'm weird and funny and I go to punk rock shows and I have cool tattoos and I make informative content about international education and I grow great gardens and my friends ask me for help and advice and to embroider flowers on their jeans and read their tarot cards and bring them wildflower jam and ALL OF THIS IS TRUE BUT FOR SOME REASON BECAUSE I CAN'T BE COMMODIFIED IT DOESN'T MATTER WHY DO I JUST WANT TO BE SEXY???

So this is me yelling at myself, and at you in case you need it:

DON'T LET THEM WIN.

Even if all you do today is yell "YOU FUCKING MATTER" at yourself in the mirror, fight the capitalist white supremacist colonists and remember that you matter.

Attack on Titan is a disaster of a masterpiece

I absolutely loved watching Attack on Titan (AoT). The horror is executed so well and the story is as captivating as it is depressing. However, the whole manga and anime are deeply tied to fascism (definitely check out YouTube video by Lost Futures and article from Polygon).

Now initially I felt like critiques were missing the point by focusing on how wrong the actions of the main characters were. I figured AoT is supposed to be seen as a cautionary tale of the horrors of war, militarism, and weapons of mass destruction because all the main characters became irredeemable mass murderers.

But after learning more about the Japanese history of fascism and the way modern fascists actually agree with actions of various main characters I realised my original interpretation was too generous. AoT had a great chance to convey an anti-war and anti-fascist message after the main plot twist of the show and tonal shift that followed and you can see in the openings exactly where it failed.

In the first half the survey corps (military) are fighting titans (the enemy) and their killing and sacrifice is glorified in the eyes of the viewer. Just listen to the music in any compilation on YouTube and look at the animations and lyrics of the songs before the final season.

But then all colour is blasted from the world. All that's left is a pale reflection of the colourful landscape where our heroes used to fight. Our heroes themselves replaced with faceless soldiers that march to violently tragic music. This intro essentially imparts the same message onto us as what it seems the main characters are coming to terms with: if you take away the monsters (or the propaganda that makes you view the enemy as monsters) the military is nothing more than a vehicle for pointless destruction and oppression.

But then Eren then gets a cool looking opening with metal music and through the hopes of his friends the story keeps suggesting to the viewer that he might have a good reason for his planned genocide that we're just not aware of yet (there is no good reason for genocide).

Even when most main characters turn against the genocide Eren has planned, their alternative is just a smaller genocide to project military might to their human enemies.

Viewers like myself that found themselves immersed in the first half of the story to the point of identifying with/rooting for the main characters now have to separate themselves from the narrative if they don't want to find themselves agreeing with fascist rhetoric (this is exactly why the opening My War is my favourite and The Rumbling my least favourite despite being a metalhead).

To me AoT will remain a great story that illustrates the horrors of war and dangers of fascism but it is a disaster in sharing that message with a general audience.

Oh I know this one! I'm currently reading an Aztec inspired fantasy novel and it's the translation of one of their god's names:

quick question, why would Olrox use the title "Old Man Coyote"? As far as we know he's Aztec? I mean I guess in the time he's been around he could have easily interacted with Native American peoples (Crow in specific, I believe?) so it's not implausible that he would refer to Old Man Coyote but I find it a little odd.

(also interesting that he says Mephistopheles actually lol implying he's familiar with the praxis magica faustiana and/or later works referencing it)
