The next morning. As instructed, Haru left home at the first crow of the rooster. Following Shane’s advice, they avoided the forest path and cut through the dim town square to reach Lewis’s house. “Still lit, huh…” Haru crept up near the entrance, crouching behind a parked car. The light was still on, pouring out from the windows. As they hesitated to knock, a faint crowing echoed from the woods. Haru held their breath and ducked into the shadows. One crow… then two, three. As the forest echoed with morning calls, a figure slowly approached through the mist. “…Mayor Lewis?” Green shirt. Yellow tie. Familiar hat and suspenders. No doubt about it—it was him. “Who’s there?” Lewis tensed, squinting toward the noise. Haru stepped forward. “It’s me, Haru. Sorry to startle you.” “Haru…? What are you doing out here so early?” He looked stunned, peering at them with suspicion. “I heard you didn’t show up at the community center during the blackout, and I was worried…” At Haru’s honest reply, Lewis sighed and slouched a bit. “Ah… that. Yeah, I… I must’ve dozed off. Didn’t even notice the power went out.” “I see… That’s good, then. I just… heard your house still had power, so I got curious.” “Oh, that? I’ve got a backup battery system. I keep it running for emergencies.” “Makes sense.” “After all, if anything happened to me, it’d cause problems for the whole town.” As Lewis puffed his chest proudly, Haru noticed something. Marks—red and blotchy—along his neck. They hadn’t been there yesterday. Speckled along his collar, down from behind his ear. In that moment, Haru finally understood why Shane had said it was “no use.” “Mayor… did you hear what Kent did last night?” “Kent? No, not yet. I suppose I should stop by later and thank him.” “You should. Oh—and, um… I have some homemade bug repellent I can bring by. It won’t help with the marks already there, but… you know. Just in case.” Haru tapped their own neck as they spoke. Lewis quickly clutched his collar. “O-oh, that’d be great! If it’s your homemade kind, I bet it works wonders!” “Glad to help. Take care, okay?” Haru gave a slight nod, somewhere between exasperation and relief, and turned to leave. Lewis hurried back into the house. Haru glanced back at the window. From the gap in the curtain, they saw him lifting something— A figure, about his height, wearing a hat. A doll? A sack? No. Whatever it was, it was too big. Too… human. How could they possibly explain this to Leah? Haru squinted against the sharp light leaking from the window, and said nothing.

――翌朝。 ハルはシェーンに言われた通り、一番鶏の声が聞こえる頃を見計らって家を出発した。 アドバイスに従うようにシンダーサップの森は避け、バス停のある道からうす暗い広場を早足で通り抜けてルイスの家の前に到着する。 「やっぱり、まだ明るい」 車の影に身をひそめながら玄関に近づくと、やはり明かりは煌々とついたままだ。 ドアをノックすべきか迷っていると、森の奥から一番鶏の声が聞こえた。 ハルは息を詰め、身を固くして物陰に身を潜める。 やがて、もやの向こうから一人の影がこちらに向かってくるのが見えた。

「…………ルイス、さん？」 見慣れた帽子に緑のシャツ、黄色いネクタイと皮のサスペンダー。 朝もやの中からこちらへ向かって来たのは、まぎれもなくルイス町長その人だった。

「誰だ!?」

物音に気付いた村長は構えるようなポーズでこちらを窺っている。 こうなっては隠れていても仕方がないと、ハルは観念してルイスの前に歩み出た。 「ハルです。驚かせてしまってすみません、ルイスさん」 「ハル……？　こんな時間にどうしたんだ」 ルイスは信じられないものを見たような顔でハルをじっと見つめる。 家の前で何をしているのかと問いかけるような視線に、ハルはええと、と頭をかいた。 「昨日の停電の時に町長が公民館に来られなかったので、大丈夫かなって思って……」 正直に告げると彼はなんだそんなことかと拍子抜けしたように肩を落とす。 「ああ……そのことか。いや、ちょうどその時、うたた寝していてな。気がついたら停電も終わっていて……」 「それなら良かった。実は町長の家だけ電気が点いていたと聞いて、少し気になっていたんです」 「それは……ああそう、家の蓄電池で明かりをつけていたんだ。夜は防災のためにそうして過ごしている」 「そうですか……」 「ああ。私に何かあればペリカンタウンの皆に迷惑をかけてしまうからな」 そう言って胸を張ったルイスの首元に、ハルはある“異変”を見つけてしまった。 昨日はなかったはずの、赤いアザのような痕――。 耳の下から襟元にかけて、点々と浮かぶそれを見て、ハルはようやく理解する。 シェーンが、なぜあの時『無駄だ』と言い切ったのかを。 「……昨日、ケントが問題を解決してくれたことはご存じですか？」 「そうなのか？　いや、顛末についてはまだ聞いていないが……後ほどケントの家に行ってみることにするよ」 「ええ。あと……あの、おせっかいかもしれませんが今度家で作った虫よけを持ってきますね。その……もう痕になっている所は隠せませんが」 指でトントンと自分の首元を叩くと、意味が分かったのかルイスは慌てて首元を押さえる。 「あ、ああ、助かる！ハルの作った虫よけなら効きそうだな！」 「お役に立てるなら何よりです。それじゃあ、お大事に」 ハルがホッとしたような呆れたような気持ちでルイスに別れを告げると、ルイスもそれに応えた後、慌てて家へ入って行った。

一人残されたハルがもう一度窓の方を見ると、何か帽子をかぶった人形のようなもの――いや、それにしては大きすぎる“何か”を、ルイスが抱え上げるのが見えた。 この話、リアにどう伝えるべきか。 ハルは今もカーテンの隙間から漏れる光の眩しさに、目を細めることしかできなかった。

They reached the community center, where a few townsfolk had already gathered. “Evening, everyone,” Haru greeted. “Hey Haru, you alright?” Elliott opened his arms in welcome, while Shane silently slipped past them toward the back. Haru wanted to thank him, but thought better of bringing up the mayor. “Yeah, everything’s fine on my end. What about you guys?” Harvey had stayed behind to monitor medical equipment. Alex had dropped by earlier but returned home to be with George and Evelyn. As Demetrius was explaining this, Sebastian burst through the door. “Sebastian, what happened—?” “The code that wasn’t backed up to the cloud? All gone. I knew this blackout was coming and worked on my laptop, but it still got wiped! What the hell?” He glared at Demetrius. “Let me guess—some dumb animal again? Why don’t you go on one of your field studies and find out?” “We already know the cables weren’t damaged. Arguing won’t help,” Demetrius replied evenly. Pierre stepped between them, holding a flashlight. “More importantly,” he raised his voice, “we need to do something about this situation. If my store’s fridge fails, I’ll be facing serious losses. It’s a bit of a walk, but someone should check the town’s power grid—” “That won’t be necessary.” All eyes turned toward the source of the voice— It was Kent, standing in the doorway.

Kent slowly raised his head, scanning each face in the room before speaking in a calm, steady voice. “The power will be restored shortly, and this won’t happen again. Everything’s been taken care of.” A silence fell over the group. “Wait, what do you mean by that…?” Before anyone could ask further, Kent shook his head slowly, as if to stop the questions before they came. “It’s been handled. That’s all I can say.” The room remained quiet for a beat, until Demetrius stepped forward. “If you’ve taken care of what’s been happening every night, then there’s only one thing for us to say—Thank you, Kent.” “Yeah,” he replied simply. As if on cue, the streetlights flickered back on, and the community center was bathed in light once more. “The power’s back…” “I have to run! Need to check my inventory before anything melts—thank you, Kent!” Pierre bolted for the door. “I wasn’t in trouble or anything, but… thanks, man.” “Yeah.” One by one, the villagers thanked Kent and made their way out. Haru followed suit, stepping up to him. “Thank you, Kent… But doing it all alone must’ve been tough, right?” Kent narrowed his eyes slightly. “I figured you’d notice.” He smiled, faintly. “Joja’s got ties to both Sam and Jodi. And now that I think about it… you used to work there too, didn’t you?” Raising a finger to his lips, Kent added softly—just for Haru to hear: “That place has caused enough trouble. But I’m not starting a fight—not in this town.” Haru nodded. On the way back, they considered whether to go to Lewis’s house again— But Shane cut in, “It’s pointless. Just go home.” “I didn’t really get what Kent meant… what do you think?” Haru shared what had been said. Shane stopped, gazing up at the sky. “…I see. I owe Kent one.” “Wait, you understood all that?” “Of course. He told you because you used to be Joja, right? And who’s working at Joja Mart now, along with Sam and Jodi?” “That would be… Mo—”

Before Haru could say the name, Shane clamped a hand over their mouth. “Hey now. Don’t say another word. The problem’s solved. It won’t happen again. That’s enough, isn’t it?” “…Yeah.” Haru still didn’t understand how Kent had figured it all out. “He probably saw something while picking Jodi up,” Shane said, turning away. “Not that I’d know.” Haru looked at him with admiration. “You’re amazing, Shane. You really look out for everyone.” “Huh? Where’s that coming from? I just happened to be there— Aw, shut up!” Shane waved his flashlight around and stormed off. Haru jogged to catch up, finding him waiting outside Marnie’s house. “What Kent said—that’s just my guess, okay? Don’t believe everything you hear.” “Got it. I won’t dig any deeper.” As Haru hesitated, wondering whether to ask about Lewis— Shane brought a hand to his mouth and whispered: “If you really wanna know, go take a look. At first light—when the rooster crows.”

他愛ない会話を楽しみながら公民館に着くと、すでに中には数人の人が身を寄せ合っていた。 「こんばんは、皆さん」 「ああハル。大丈夫だったかい？」 エリオットが両手を広げて迎えると、横にいたシェーンは無言で奥へと進んでいく。 シェーンにお礼を言いたい気持ちはあったが町長のことを詮索されても良くないので 「ありがとう、うちは問題ないよ。みんなは？」 と尋ねることにした。

ハーヴィーは医療機器を見るために家に残り、アレックスは一度様子を見に来たがジョージとエブリンのために家に戻ったとディメトリウスの説明を受けていると、セバスチャンが勢いよく公民館の扉を開けて入ってきた。 「セバスチャン、なにかあった……？」 「……クラウドに上がってない分のコードが全部消えた。今日の停電は予想できてたからノートPCでやってたのに、どういうことだよクソっ」 吐き捨てるようにそう言うとディメトリウスを睨みつけた 「どうせ動物かなんかだろ。お得意のフィールドワークで原因でも探ってきたらどうだ？」 「原因がケーブルではないことはわかっているはず。ここで争っても仕方がないですよ」 ディメトリウスとセバスチャンの間に入るようにピエールがライトを差し込むと「それより」と皆に向かって声を上げた。 「いい加減この状況を何とかしなければいけません。店の冷蔵庫のものが溶けてしまったら私の店は大損害だ。少し遠いと思いますがペリカンタウンの配電盤を……」 「その必要はない」 声の主を辿るように視線を向けると、公民館の入り口に立っていたのはケントだった。 ケントはゆっくりと顔を上げ、そこにいる一人一人を見つめながら、諭すように言葉を紡いだ。 「……電気はまもなく普及するし、今後同じ現象が起きることはない。すべて大丈夫だ」 説得力のある声に一同は顔を見合わせる。 「それは……」 どういうことなのか、と尋ねようとするがケントはそれ以上尋ねることを阻むようにゆっくり首を振る。 「……こちらで対処した、話せるのはそれだけだ」 それきり、沈黙が公民館を包む。 お互い顔を見合わせるだけでどうしたものかと思ったその時、ディメトリウスが歩み出た。 「きみが毎晩の問題を解決してくれたなら、僕たちから言えることは一つだ。 ありがとう、ケント」 「ああ」 測り合わせたように外灯が、そして公民館の中にも灯りが戻ってくる。 「……電気、戻ったね」 「いけない、すぐに店に戻って商品を確認しなければ。ケント、ありがとうございます」 ホッとしたのもつかの間、ピエールがバタバタと出ていく。 「おれはまぁ、困ったりはしてないけど……助かったよ、ありがとう」 「ああ」 口々にケントへ感謝の意を伝え公民館を出ていくので、ハルもそれに倣うようにケントの前に立ち感謝の意を伝えた。 「ありがとう、ケント……でも、たった一人で対処するのは大変じゃなかった？」 ハルの問いかけに、ケントはわずかに目を細めた。 「そうか。アンタなら、気付いていてもおかしくはない」 意味深に笑ったケントは、ハルの質問を制すように人差し指を唇に立て、それから―― 「あの店には、ジョディもサムも世話になってる。荒事にはしないさ」 ハルにだけ聞こえる声で、そう呟いた。

公民館を後にしたハルはもう一度ルイスの家に行くべきか迷っていたが、シェーンに 「今行っても無駄だぜ、さっさと家に帰るんだな」 と家に帰るように促されてしまった。

「ケントの言ってる意味が分からなかったんだけど、どういうことだと思う？」 先ほどのやり取りをシェーンに話すと、シェーンは立ち止まって空を見上げた後 「……なるほど。ケントには礼をしなきゃな」 と頬を緩ませた。 「ええと、今の話でシェーンは理解できた？」 「もちろん。ケントがお前に話したのもお前が元jojaの人間だったから、で、ジョディとサム、それから俺が働いているのは……？」 「jojaマート……じゃあ、あれはモー」 点と点がつながり、思わず大きな声を上げそうになったハルの口にシェーンは手を当てた。 「おっと、そこから先は口にすんなよ。問題は解決した、二度と同じことは起きない。それで充分だろ？」 「そう……、だね」 人為的なもの、おそらく嫌がらせのたぐいだとして、なぜケントはそれに気が付いたのだろう。 ハルが腑に落ちない顔をしているとシェーンはそっぽを向いたまま 「まあ、ケントはよくジョディを迎えに来てるからな。そこで何かあったんだろ」 知らねえけど、と付け加えるようにこぼすシェーンをハルは尊敬のまなざしで見つめた。 「シェーンはすごいね。ペリカンタウンのみんなの事をちゃんと気にかけてる」 「は？　どうしてそうなる。俺はたまたま……、だーっ！　クソ！」 シェーンはライトを振り回しながら早足で先に行ってしまった。

ハルが小走りで追いかけると、シェーンはマーニーの家の前で待っていた。 「ケントの事は俺の憶測だから、なんでもかんでも信じるなよ」 「うん。これ以上は詮索しない」 でもルイスの件は、と聞くべきか迷うハルを見かねたのか、シェーンは口元に手を当て声を潜めた。 「……どうしても気になるっていうなら、明日の一番鶏が鳴く頃に見に行けばいい」

That night, as Haru finished refilling the lantern with oil and placed it beside their bed— BZZZT! The lights in the house went out. “So it really is happening…” Haru lit the lantern, narrowed their eyes, and hooked a small sickle to their belt for safety. “Everyone’s supposed to meet at the community center… but maybe I’ll check Lewis’s house first.” With that, they stepped out into the night, lantern in hand. Retracing the same forest path they’d taken with Leah, now alone. The woods without streetlights were darker than expected. Compared to life before moving to Pelican Town—where lights were always on, and people were always around— Haru could feel just how much their surroundings had changed in the past few years. “…Didn’t even know how to light a lantern back then,” they muttered, gazing up at a sky full of stars.

They spotted Lewis, slouched in his chair, unmoving. “Maybe he’s asleep… He wasn’t at the saloon tonight either.” Haru walked up to the front door and knocked gently, then a bit louder. “Mayor Lewis? It’s Haru. Sorry to bother you this late.” Just as they raised their hand to knock again— A firm grip caught their wrist. “Don’t bother. It’s no use.” “Shane…?” Shane nodded once, his face unreadable. “What do you mean ‘no use’? Is he asleep?” “Beats me. Come on, we’re heading to the community center.” Without answering further, Shane let go and started walking. Haru bit back their questions and followed. “Is Jas okay? She’s not scared of the dark, is she?” “She’s fine. Already in bed. I peeked in before leaving—she’ll sleep through the night.” “That’s good to hear.” Relieved, Haru let out a breath. Shane cast a sideways glance at them. “You doing okay? No power problems on your end?” “Yeah. Honestly, I didn’t even realize it was happening until today. I go to bed so early, I usually sleep right through it.” “Lucky you,” Shane snorted. “Guess I’m like a kid,” Haru laughed back. For a moment, walking alongside him in the dark like this felt like a secret adventure—and Haru couldn’t help but smile.

ハルは目を細めながらランタンを灯し、護身用に腰に小さな鎌をベルトにぶら下げる。 「公民館に集まるように言われたけど……その前に町長の家を見に行こう」 動かない町長のウワサを確かめるべく、ランタンを片手に家を出た。

リアと一緒に帰ってきた道を一人で黙々と歩く。 灯りのない森は思った以上に暗く、ペリカンタウンに来る前にいた場所は24時間どこかしら明るく人がいたことを思うと この数年での自分の環境が大きく変わったことを実感する。

「……前はランタンの点け方も知らなかったのになぁ」

ぽつりとつぶやいて空を見上げると、吸い込まれそうなほどの星空が広がっていた。

ルイスの家に到着すると、確かに部屋には煌々と明かりが点いていた。 ランタンの穏やかな炎と比べるとかなり強い光はカーテンの隙間から一筋の光となってルイスの大切な花壇へと降り注いでいる。 行儀が悪いとは思いつつ覗いてみると、ぼんやりと椅子に腰かけるルイスの影が目に入った。 「……眠っているのかな。今日はサルーンにも来ていなかったし」 ハルは玄関に回り込み、いつもは開かれている扉をノックした。 「ルイスさん、いらっしゃいますか？　ハルです、夜分にすみません」 何度か扉を叩いていたら、ふいに叩いている方の手を掴まれた。 「……やめとけ、無駄だ」 「っ、シェーン……？」 腕をつかんだシェーンはハルに向かって一つ大きく頷く。 「無駄ってどういうこと？　ルイスは眠っているの？」 「さぁな。それより公民館に行こうぜ」 シェーンは理解ができていないハルの腕から手を離すと「行くぞ」と小さく声をかける。 別れ際にほろ酔いだったとは思えないほどしっかりした足取りで先を行くシェーン。 ハルは色々質問したい気持ちを飲み込み、その後を追いかけた。

「ジャスは大丈夫？　暗くて泣いてない？」 「いや、彼女はもうベッドの中だ。来る前に覗いてみたが朝までぐっすりだろうな」 「それならよかった」 子供たちが怖い思いをしていないなら一安心だと胸をなでおろすと、シェーンはこちらを一瞥�� 「お前んトコは大丈夫だったのかよ」 と気まずそうにつぶやく。 「うん。いつも早く寝るせいで今日まで停電に気が付かなかったくらいだしね」 「そりゃ幸せだったな」 子供か、と笑うシェーンにハルはそうかも、と笑って答える。 ハルは彼とこうして過ごすことが、まるで秘密の探検のようで少しワクワクしていた。

“Hey there, Farmer. Last night was quite something, huh?” Haru—returning from work—had just stepped into the Stardrop Saloon when Willy, standing by the entrance, called out to them. “Last night? Did something happen?” “Come on, you didn’t notice? Working hard is fine, but too much of it’ll ruin your health.” Tilting their head in confusion, Haru spotted Elliott at the counter turning their way. “There was a blackout,” Elliott explained. “Lately they’ve been happening around midnight and sometimes lasting until dawn. Pelican Town wrapped in darkness is quite beautiful under the starlight… but the fridge the next morning? Utter devastation.” “Really? I had no idea.” Haru usually worked until just before midnight, crawling into bed the moment their tasks were done. With the next morning’s animal care and watering duties on their mind, their eyelids grew heavy, and they’d fall asleep before they knew it—waking only to the sound of the first rooster’s crow. “Well, that’s how it is. I’m closing up shop early tonight too. No point running a bar in the dark.” With that, Gus announced the saloon’s early closing, and the villagers started heading home ahead of usual. “Feels like kind of a dull night thanks to the blackout, huh.” On the way home, Leah said softly as the two of them walked together toward Cindersap Forest. “Yeah, I guess so. But walking home in total darkness would be even worse.” Haru glanced up at the pale moonlight, and Leah sighed in agreement. The streetlights dotting the roads were never that bright to begin with. Without them, the town felt unusually hollow. “Still… what’s actually causing the blackout?” “No idea. Shane said it might be mice or something, but the fuse box seemed fine to me. Lewis said he’d have the power company inspect it… but not until next month.” Leah looked around cautiously, then leaned toward Haru and whispered: “Hey, Haru. This is just something I heard, but…”

“I heard that even when the whole village loses power, the lights at Mayor Lewis’s house never go out.” Leah whispered the words with a serious look on her face. “Only his place? Maybe he has a generator or something?” “I don’t think so. You’d hear it if he did.” “Maybe he’s just using flashlights…” “People say they’ve knocked during a blackout, but he never answers. Even though there’s a shadow inside, it doesn’t move at all.” Leah’s uneasy tone made Haru instinctively lower their voice, too. “…You think Lewis has something to do with the blackout?” Leah slowly shook her head. “I don’t know. But it’s strange, isn’t it? Not just Elliott—others who went on patrol say they saw it too.” “Hmm…” Haru folded their arms and thought it over. Lewis’s house alone staying lit, no response when knocking, and unmoving shadows behind the curtains… “I don’t get it. But if it happens again, I’ll go check for myself.” “Thanks,” Leah said, offering a small smile.

「よぉファーマー、夕べは大変だったな」 仕事を終え、スタードロップサルーンに入ったファーマー――ハルに、入り口にいたウィリーが声をかけた。 「昨夜？　何かあったの？」 「おいおい、気付かなかったのか？　畑仕事もいいが、働きすぎは体に毒だぞ」 何のことやら、と首をかしげていると、カウンターにいたエリオットがこちらに向かって来た。 「停電だよ。最近は日付が変わる頃から数時��、長いと明け方まで続くこともある。 暗闇に包まれたペリカンタウンは星々の煌めきに照らされて美しいけれど――翌朝の冷蔵庫は、目も当てられない惨状さ」 「そうだったんだ……全然知らなかった」 ハルはいつも、ギリギリまで働いて日付が変わる直前にはベッドに潜り込む。 翌朝に行う動物たちの世話や水やりの事を考えているうちに瞼は重く沈み、そのまま鶏の声で目覚めるまでぐっすりだ。

「まあ、そういうことだから今夜はうちの店も早じまいするよ。暗闇の中で営業する予定もないからね」 ガスにそう切り出され、住人たちはいつもより早めにサルーンを後にすることとなった。

「停電のせいでちょっと味気ない夜になっちゃったわね」 帰り道、リアに声を掛けられ共にシンダーサップの森へ向かって歩き出す。 「でも停電になったら帰り道真っ暗になっちゃうし、仕方ないよ」 ファーマーがぼんやりと光る月を見上げながら呟くと、リアもそうよねと息を吐く。 道端にぽつりぽつりと立ち並ぶ外灯は決して明るくないものの、消えてしまったらそれは非常に心細いだろう。 「……それにしても、停電の原因って何なんだろう」 「さぁ。シェーンはネズミだって言ってたけど、切れたケーブルなんかはなかったみたい。 ルイス町長は来月には電気会社に点検してもらうって言ってたけど……だいぶ先よね」

そう言って一つ溜息をついた後、リアはあたりを見回してハルの名を呼んだ。 「ねぇハル、これは聞いた話なんだけど……」 ---

「町全体が停電しているのに、ルイス町長の家だけ明かりが消えないらしいの」

リアは神妙���面持ちでハルにそう耳打ちをしてきた。 「町長の家だけ？　自家発電機があったりするのかな」 「違うと思うわ。発電機なら音がするもの」 「それじゃあ、懐中電灯を備えているとか……」 「停電の時にノックをしても出てこないらしいの。人影はあるのに、全く動かないんですって」 リアの少し困惑したような表情に、ハルも同じように声を潜めた。 「……この停電はルイスが関係しているってこと？」 リアはゆっくり首を振り「わからないわ」と肩を落とす。 「だけど、何か変だって。エリオットだけじゃなくて、見回りをした人たちは皆見ているはずよ」 そうなんだ、とハルは腕を組み一通り思案する。 ルイスの家だけ消えない明かり、ノックしても反応のないルイス、窓に映る人影…… 「なんでなんだろう。わからないけど、次に停電したら私も行ってみるよ」 ハルが別れ際にそう告げると、リアも「お願いね」と少しだけ微笑んで見せた。
