not a meme but i think it would be pretty fuckin cool if we all did this. and not just for a month, but until we start getting what we deserve. they only profit off of us. they don’t deserve our attention. eat the rich.

Ok yes but also no.
In Victoria Australia which has a population of 6.7 million in an area the size of England we went into hard lockdown with around 1500 active cases it took a total of 100 days before we were able to leave hard lockdown. Lockdown which looked like:
No travelling more than 5km (3miles) from your home.
Only ONE person able to leave the house per day to go shopping for supplies.
Only allowed to leave the house if you are an essential worker, are a registered carer for a family member, are shopping for supplies like food/medicines or have a medical emergency.
One hour of exercise outdoors per day, wearing a mask at all times, no more than two people at once (from the same household) and within 3 miles of your house.
Mandatory mask wearing requirements EVERYWHERE except your home.
It was full on and if you lived alone you could be stuck alone for weeks on end. I had a full mental health crisis from the intensity of the lockdown and I was an essential worker seeing people everyday.
Tons of people who own small businesses lost their businesses or were severely financially damaged.
It’s not “oh two weeks -easy” it’s at least 3 virus cycles so 42 days and even then the sheer number of active cases in the USA means it could take longer than that to see significant case reduction. Plus you have to ensure people adhere which means roadblocks all across the country.
You also need a job protection/wage protection policy that works. Australia instigated a job keeper policy where the government paid the wages of workers who would otherwise have been laid off or out of work and it was sweeping.
They actively encouraged and funded testing for anyone and everyone which meant we were processing 40,000 tests a day some days. There were multiple testing sites and ways to access them. You were told to test if you had so much as a sniffle.
AND EVEN NOW months later we still have restrictions, masks are just now leaving rotation, you can have 15 person maximum indoor gatherings. Distancing is still required for most businesses. Offices can only have 25-50% of their staff in the building at once.
Don’t get me wrong I am incredibly proud of my country and how well we handled the incredibly difficult lockdown, but it was hard and traumatic and hurt people. Our suicide hotline reached its highest number of calls in a single night EVER. I’m glad we did it and grateful for everyone’s cooperation because it meant that I could hug my grandpa at Christmas and drink with my friends on New Year’s Eve without fear that I might be hurting someone unknowingly.
I’m not saying the USA couldn’t do it but the USA could not do this. They don’t have the ability to cooperate or coordinate something of this scale, to get people on board and compliant or to police those who aren’t. They would never put in place the social programs and protection for working class people to help them through a lockdown. There isnt an ingrained sense of community, decency and respect for the wellbeing of others in America. There is a strong “me-first” attitude which while empowering makes this kind of massive cooperative effort for the good of a nation basically impossible for them.
