The Beam by Marina Dyachenko, Sergey Dyachenko
Another book from Dyachenkos about people’s society and its dynamics. The end of the book is not very easy to understand but I can name it “Happy End”. Good science fiction with drama and places to think.

Grammarly & Gutenberg
Finally! Grammarly (Google Chrome plugin) is integrated into Gutenberg WordPress editor! 😍 I don’t need to copy-paste the text to check it. Related threads: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/gutenberg-and-grammarly/https://wordpress.org/support/topic/conflicts-with-grammarly/

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
After reading a summary about this book I thought it should be something about the humans vs the spiders battle. But I was surprised to read the deep story about society, pease&war, and other problems. And it’s the first audiobook I’ve listened to in English. My recommendation is 👍 if you love science fiction.

Armaged-dom by Marina Dyachenko, Sergey Dyachenko
Armaged-dom by Marina Dyachenko, Sergey Dyachenko
I haven’t found a good article about this book in English. So the link to Russian Wikipedia is here. The name of the book is not a typo. “Armaged-dom” means “Armaged-house” after translation from Russian. The book describes the world of repetitive apocalypses. Authors describe the society which might exist in such conditions. The initial impression about the genre of this book is science…

LeanDS meetup (Russian language)
LeanDS meetup (Russian language)
Someone on Facebook recommended watching a Youtube recording from LeanDS meetup. The video is Russian so it might be a limitation for the people reading this post. Ashat Urazbaev gives a good overview of the evolution of data usage patterns in different companies. One new term for me – “technical tax”. It includes the contribution the data teams should put back to the data platform if they use…

The Fourth Industrial Revolution by Klaus Shwab
The Fourth Industrial Revolution by Klaus Shwab
The Fourth Industrial Revolution by Klaus Shwab was published in 2015 and it spoils the impression a lot. I share the main ideas from the book but examples are outdated. Klaus is writing about things that are expected in 2020-2025. And It’s hard to read when you are in 2021 and in the middle of Covid pandemic. I didn’t get a lot of new ideas from the book. Lots of the things from it were…

Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment
Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment
I was skeptical about UNIX-based systems before I’ve started to write code in Python. It’s extremely ugly to compile its libraries from source code on Windows. Then I’ve switched to Ubuntu, after that – MacOS. I don’t know what should happen with me to switch back to Windows. After years of UNIX usage, I decided to catch up a bit on the basic things these operating systems are working on.…

No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention
No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention
I wanted to pick something about management and relatively new. This book about Netflix corporate culture by Reed Hustings and Erin Meyer was not only translated to Russian but also existed in audio version. It’s a bit hard for me to listen to English in the background while doing daily routines. “No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention” was released in 2020 and examples and…

Exceptions in programming
I’m reading a book with code examples in C. The absence of exception in C is the weirdest thing for me. You should always check for return values and or some global variable for error code. Maybe with some weird goto. int somefunction(int param) { if (something) return(-1); if (something else) goto errout; if (another check) if (one more validation) goto errout; return(useful data); errout: do…

Mondly - learn foreign languages
Mondly – learn foreign languages
Someone in Telegram chats recommended Mondly as an application to learn Lithuanian. I’ve tried it and enjoyed Mondly. Easy interface, clear progress, notifications, gamification – nice features to make foreign language learning more fun and less boring. I can’t say I need Lithuanian to live in Vilnius when I speak English and Russian. But it is worth spending some time at least to show respect…

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
What do you think about science fiction for children? In addition to the reading to myself, I have books in my electronic book for the elder son. He is able to read in Russian but he’s also not against the proposal to listen to the book before going to sleep. So The Wild Robot by Peter Brown appeared to be a good fit for my six years old son. It’s science fiction about robots, animals, AI…

Rough Draft again by Sergey Lukyanenko
Rough Draft again by Sergey Lukyanenko
Looks like I have a lot of time on parental leave while walking with a baby carriage. Some fiction audiobook is a good option while watching on a sleeping baby. 👶 I chose another book by Sergey Lukyanenko – Rough Draft. It took me 3-4 days to listen to it. It’s a classic of Russian science fiction too. Parallel worlds, fights, the plot is embedded in the real world of Moscow. Maybe there is too…

BY Tech Community Welcome Party
BY Tech Community Welcome Party
I visited BY Tech Community Welcome Party yesterday. Vilnius IT people were meeting folks from Belarus who moved to live in Vilnius. The event was like networking with some snacks and drinks. Conference without speakers. There were a couple of welcoming speeches but not a lot. Interesting fact from the speech: around 2000 IT specialists from Belarus are now in Vilnius. I’ve met one person I knew…
