Niffty  was  born  Miyoko  Ito  in  1930  in  San  Francisco,  California,  the  second  generation  of  her  Japanese  family  to  be  born  in  the  US.  She  died  at  the  age  of  22  from  a  gunshot  wound,  which  entered  her  left  eye  and  exited  through  the  back  of  her  skull.  

Niffty's  grandmother  was  one  of  many  Japanese  immigrant  "picture  brides"  that  came  to  the  US  to  marry  Japanese  men  already  living  there;  a  system  that  persisted  until  1920  when  the  Japanese  government  ceased  issuing  passports  to  picture  brides  in  order  to  maintain  a  good  relationship  with  the  US.  Picture  brides  were  just  that,  photos  of  unmarried  Japanese  women  that  Japanese-American  men  selected  with  the  help  of  a  Matchmaker.  The  chosen  bride  did  not  meet  or  even  know  what  her  husband  looked  like  until  he  picked  her  up  at  the  Immigration  station  when  she  arrived  in  the  US.  This  was  often  a  way  for  these  women  to  escape  poverty  and  find  new  opportunities  in  the  West  without  having  to  go  through  the  standard  immigration  process.  Niffty's  grandmother  arrived  in  the  US  in  1908  at  the  age  of  20  and  Niffty's  mother  was  born  three  years  later  in  1911.  

Niffty  is  the  first  and  only  member  of  her  family  that  became  fluent  in  English ( during the time she was alive ),  succeeding  in  being  a  fully  bilingual  Japanese-American  citizen.  While  her  parents  could  speak  it  in  small  disjointed  phrases,  Niffty's  grandmother  didn't  know  a  single  word  of  English  and  relied  on  her  husband,  and  later  her  children  and  grandchildren,  to  translate  for  her.  

In  school,  her  name  was  often  shortened  to  Koko  for  easier  pronunciation  by  English  speakers.  She,  and  other  Japanese-American  children  living  in  San  Francisco,  were  able  to  attend  public  schooling  alongside  white  children  due  to  the  Gentleman's  Agreement  of  1907,  which  was  an  informal  diplomatic  agreement  between  the  US  and  Japan  to  ease  rising  tensions.  In  exchange  for  restricting  the  emigration  of  labourers  to  the  US,  the  School  Board  of  San  Francisco  repealed  a  decision  that  had  prohibited  Japanese  schoolchildren  from  attending  what  was  otherwise  all-white  schools.  

Niffty  was  married,  at  the  time  of  her  death,  to  a  man  who  had  been  —  by  all  appearances  —  faithful  and  loving.  Unfortunately,  Niffty  found  out  not  long  into  the  marriage  that  he  had  been  having  an  ongoing  affair  with  his  secretary  that  predated  their  marriage.  She  didn't  much  care  for  his  excuses,  but  apparently  the  woman  was  someone  his  family  hadn't  approved  of  due  to  her  "fresh"  attitude,  and  preferred  Niffty's  much  more  traditional  demeanour  despite  her  Japanese  background.  Consumed  by  jealousy  and  rage  at  the  betrayal,  she  stabbed  him  multiple  times  with  a  kitchen  knife;  but  not  before  he  grabbed  his  gun  and  shot  her  in  retaliation.  He  survived  the  attack  and  is,  unfortunately,  still  alive  at  the  age  of  93.  However,  Niffty  is  unaware  of  this.  

A  combination  of  insanity  and  the  shot  through  the  head  had  unintended  side  effects  when  she  ended  up  in  Hell.  Aside  from  her  one-eyed  appearance,  Niffty  was  amnesiac.  She  couldn't  remember  her  own  name  much  less  anything  else  of  her  human  life,  besides  a  few  brief  flashbacks  that  have  slowly  filled  in  over  time.  

Her  new  identity  as  'Niffty'  was  actually  suggested  to  her  by  Alastor  when  they  formed  a  contract.  It  was  a  word  she  had  initially  repeated  quite  often  in  her  early  years  in  Hell,  likely  due  to  its  prominence  as  popular  slang  in  the  1950s.  To  this  day,  she  hasn't  been  able  to  recall  her  birth  name,  but  isn't  particularly  upset  about  it.  All  she  can  really  recall  with  any  undisputed  clarity  is  her  Japanese  background,  simply  because  she  can  still  speak  it  and  is  prone  to  speak  in  Japanese  to  herself  when  she's  alone.
